  • Manfred Man's best song.

  • @einherje71 ... I agree ... They had plenty of great songs, but this ( maybe in a tie with Pretty Flamingo ) is the best of them, in my opinion. ... Wayne

  • I was fourteen years old when I first heard this and I did not realise the effect it would have on me 46 years later. Thank you for posting it.

  • brill song

  • "Now I am just a poor boy, baby, trying to connect, Oh, but i'm not trying to make you give anything,

    That you ain't given before."

1965 ...... the year in which i was born. When political correctness was just a twinkle in it's father's eye !!

  • @TheEctomorph R U joiking? Some songs say it out loud: I´m horny horny horny....And MTV is full of seminaked women and men who look like pimps and sing about drugs. Political correctness? Gimme a break! :)

  • Bob Dylan song 1965, One of the few covers that he actually liked, recorded on the advice of their then manager Ken Pitt who went on to become one of David Bowies managers

  • I recently alluded to the fact that this fine track by Manfred Mann - which was released in 1965 - was not exactly 'politically correct' (as a matter of fact, it was very far from being PC)!!

What the vocalist is saying (to an eminently shaggable but sexually inexperienced bird) is basically this: "If you want to leave my gaffe, then go ahead - but if you don't leave immediately, I am going to shag you senseless, and I am not going to bother asking for your consent."

    A very non-PC song!

  • @TheEctomorph For more Phabulous phallic phrivolity you should check out "The Snake" by the band others have mentioned here since they also recorded this Dylan tune. The Liverpo ol Five were known throughout the Western US for their wild parties with fans.Their music was often filled withdouble entendres.

  • Excellent. I suppose it could be said that, this fine track - by Manfred Mann - was one of the great 'screwing' records of the 1960's (just like "Stay With Me" by Rod Stewart & The Faces was one of the great screwing records of the 1970's)!

It goes without saying that this song - "If You've Gotta Go, Go Now" - is VERY 'politically incorrect' (by the standards of 2011, that is). But wth ...... i certainly don't have an "issue" - as they say in modern parlance - with that! hehehe.

  • Great track by Manfred Mann (from the year 1965, i believe). Paul Jones was the lead vocalist on this track, and clearly he did a fine job. I am sure that Mike d'Abo - who was to replace 'Jonesy' as the lead singer of M.M. the following year - would have done a very good job of singing "If You Gotta Go, Go Now" too (had he been given the opportunity).

  • Cruising Yu Tube I found " Nuggets from the Liverpool Five ( Part 1)". Included in the the tunes there is their version of Dylan's tune recorded in the US a bit earlier than Manfred Mann's.As others have noted it is well worth checking out eh!!!

  • Another great cover of a fun Dylan tune....

  • i dig the pics

  • cracker song

  • as usual a cover is better than Dylan himself. Dylan was a great songwriter, but a terrible singer. I much prefer his songs by others-particularly the Byrds

  • this is a brilliant cover - same as the fairport convention cover of the same song sang in froggy french

  • A great track by MM; I have always liked it. The lyrics are not exactly P.C. - quite the opposite, in fact !! If the record had been released in 2005 - not 1965 - it would surely have been banned by the vast majority of radio stations in the UK.

  • You have some amazing music and I love your pictures five stars all the way

  • "If you gotta go go now"? That's the Moody Blues song. Completely different.

    And EONS better!

  • If anybody thinks the Liverpool Five are a match for Manfred Mann with Paul Jones or Mike D Abo upfront forget it they must be on Drugs !!!!

  • @burnley5960 I used to agree with you about MM and the LP5 . But after checking out a lot of the latter's stuff on You Tube I ordered the " Best of the Liverpool Five" cd recently released on Sundazed . Their versatility , multiple harmonizing and instrumental prowess have convinced me that they are the superior group. However, I have to admit that I actually prefer MM's version of this Dylan tune to theirs. But go check out the LP5 on " Heart" , " Anyway that You Want Me" and "The Snake" ..

  • One of my all time favorites

  • *****

  • Very suggestive lyrics for those days. Wouldn't this have came out at about the same time as "Let's Spend the Night Together" by the Rolling Stones, which - I believe - got banned?

Did this song escape a banning?

  • @Strawberry7Lynn It came out two years before the Stones tune, was not banned, but many critics called it "Obscene".

  • @mcdonnell220 These days it would not be called "obscene"; merely "politically incorrect".

  • Yes a brilliant 1960s special MM were the best at it

  • Brilliant.

The best version in my book. Absolutely superb!

  • This & Pretty Flamingo are their best. Mighty Quinn is no. 3

  • Never knew this was a Dylan composition. It sounds like something Dylan would do. What a composer, he wrote so many songs and while not the greatest singer by a long shot he could really write a tune. Probably one of the most known writers of the last half of the century.

  • Gotta say that this version is ok but best all time is by the Liverpool Five...go check it's on U atube

  • @Roxsox221 The Liverpool Five are no match for Manfred Mann no way Paul Jones alone would blow them away

  • This, and Pretty Flamingo are their best

  • Scottish painter Jack Vettriano?

  • The years may come & go.....but this song is still so APPROPRIATE..My children think they know it all..in their 30s! I do believe we were blessed to have lived through(& survived!) the 60s

  • what?

  • great song

  • Just a reminder that altho this is quite a KOOL recording of this Dylan tune, the original version recorded earlier by the Liverpool Five is well worth checking out on You Tube. This criminally overlooked band from England that relocated in 1965 to the US has seen their tunes ripped off by quite a few others, including the Troggs, Spiritualized, Paul Revere, Blues Magoos and Mannfred Mann. All fine bands in their own right but only now is their secret coming to light thru research avenues.

  • @KOOLEO329

Thanks for the info about the Liverpool Five. I'm not sure I've heard of them before and 'If You Gotta Go' has alway been one of my favourite 60s singles, so I'm going straight to check them out!

  • @concordvinyl Hope you got to check out " Nuggets from the Liverpool Five ( Part 1)" on the Tube and know why me and others refer that version included as one of the three tunes on that video. A well kept secret revealed.

  • This is good music of the great 60´s. Manfred Mann, the Kinks, the Rolling Stones....

  • Great Scottish artist - the paintings are great thanks. Bill

  • @jnmklo9 Hi - i love the song - and these paintings too - do you know the name of the artist by any chance? Thank you

  • the fairport convention did a very good version of this as well, although in french.

  • Hey Porridge...that FP Convention version in French is pretty good but the best version in English is definately the one by the Liverpool Five and it is on U Tube.

  • great pics! :)

  • This tune is new to me. I'm 59. I think Manfred was just a touch earlier than my teen years. It certainly has that distinctive tinny 60's disco type sound. Where the heck were base notes? hahahaha! Please. No woofers.

  • They was (! -'there she WAS just walking down the street') not before your teen years as you would have been 13 in 1963 and they were active between 1964 and 1968. You ceased to be a teenager in 1968.

  • If you gotta go go now Manfred mann 1965 , Another Bob Dylan song.

Look at the description...sometimes it is helpfull xD

  • I think Bob Dylan wrote this song

  • yes this is their best

  • Hi Barts63...you betta go to You Tubes " Nuggets from the Liverpool Five (Part 1)" to hear the best version of this Dylan tune.

  • totally agree , great song..

  • Now I dont want to make you give anything you never gave before

Its just that I'll be sleeping soon it'll be too dark for you to find the door.

Love it! Ahh the sixties (O:

  • They were more than a match for the Beatles or any of the other 60s groups

  • @burnley5960 To say that they [Manfred Mann] were "more than a match for the Beatles or any of the other 60's groups" is to overstate the case, somewhat (in the opinion of most pop/rock critics and journalists, at any rate).

  • I luv this Dylan tune with suggestive lyrics. I just went over again to You Tube's "Nuggets from the Liverpool Five (Part 1)". The second tune there is their version of this tune recorded by them after Bob sent them his demo disc. It's a knockout,,,much more soulful than Manfred's which itself ain't that bad.Go listen to a different interpretation that is much more suggestive.

  • Hey ENS64...you are right...the LP5's version is much n more soulful..welll worth checking out if you want a change from this pop version. both have their place in music history.

  • Love this song, their best one i reckon!

  • Cool.

  • Paul Jones and Manfred Mann were the best in there day Saw Paul At Lyme Regis A Few Years Ago Great Night

  • fabulous!.

  • Excellent

  • the best cover of this song is in ItaliaM

    from a danish lady

Cristina Hansen : Ma se tu vuoi partir

  • Great song, nice pics

  • Dylan's version is badass but that Liverpool Five's interprtation is monster.

  • I agree nothing matches Paul Jones voice,

  • its a goodie.

  • Check out the Mae West cover on you tube. I belive it is song # 3 on her 1966 album. According to the "keys to the rain" reference book on Dylan songs. It should be scouted out at all costs...

  • A great Bob Dylan song MM's version is a great pop version but my favorite rendition is by the Liverpool Five with those nice 12 string guitar licks

  • I agree, that 12 string sound on the Liverpool Five's version is great, as is the tempo chosen by them .How about that fuzz tone on " She's Mine"?

  • @sggrimshaw Gotta agree with you mate. The Liverpool Five version is the best

  • I too like the original by Dylan and the very unique offering by the Liverpool Five. This MM version is pure pop.

  • Pretty good. However, I prefer the original by Bob Dylan. I also checked out the Liverpool Five's version on You Tube and found it on a par with this version, but with a more interesting tempo.

  • lalalaa

    good stuff!

  • awesome :-)

  • Comment removed

  • Great track and super choice of art work - many thanks Phil

  • Great song deserving more appreciation. Paul Jones and MM do a fine job here but to listen to another approach take a listen to it on You Tube's " Nuggets from the Liverpool Five (Part 1)".Bob really enjoyed it when he heard their version.Pity Jimi Hendrix never did it in public. I heard that he did jam on it once in Seattle with the LP5.

  • These Brits had great ears for American Folk

  • You should hear the Fairport Convention version of this - sung in French and called Si Tu Dois Partir

  • another dylan classic

  • Found this on tape in the basement, slipped in to the player and WOW!, forgot about this great song. Must be 15 years since I've last heard.

  • been looking for this for agesss, thanx

  • wow this just blew the cobwebs off dude, thanks so much janschro, now just spin the top.

  • This song suited Paul Jones' voice perfectly !! Brilliant !!

  • @blackbirdtwigg yes the vocals of Paul Jones really enhanced this song, could have been specially written for him. Still a great party boogie number too!

  • Very beautiful and talented this artist,

    good fit.

    Giulian

  • I like this song.

  • thanks so much for this gem been hunting for it forever 5huge*****

  • There Will Never Be Another 60s And The Great

Sound That Was So IN Back Then!

  • This is such a fantastic song that we played it all night long at my sister-in-laws 40th birthday party. The party was swinging all night long.

  • amazing, I've been around all these years, was a teenager in the 60's and I never knew this was a Dylan song. Doh.

  • terrific hearing this again after many years. Many thanks janschro.

  • You're welcome lkijju

  • Kedn Dodd`s Tears kept this song off the top of the charts in 1965. Nearly broke my heart. This version was banned because of the suggestive lyrics. Paul Jones and the boys didn`t care. Sexy song. Sexy group.

  • @naychud Nowadays - in the early part of the 21st century - the song "If You've Gotta Go, Go Now" would be banned on the grounds that it is too "non-PC" - NOT on the grounds that its lyrics allude to sexual intercourse.

How times - and social attitudes - have changed since 1965, eh?!!

  • Hey, This is a great song. I have 4 MANFRED MANN albums from 1964 to 1966. (U.S. editions) but this track isn't there. Thanks for sharing. CHEERS. AZ.

  • Wow - I wish I had those albums :)

Will have to buy some early Manfred Mann on Cd - I was only familiar with Doo Wah Diddy - this band is awesome !!!!!
