  • Nah - Mary Tyrone is supposed to be from the Midwest, but Hepburn has that actressy and New England phony voice. Look how she sticks her elbow toward Dean Stockwell at 7:22 - listen to the camera dolly making creaking noises during the famous backward camera movement. Awful Just awful.

  • @paulswans oh, thank you ever so much for your views on this classic.

  • @paulswans Methinks you work in the movies? Your observations are so interesting, and offer support for the underlying feeling I've always had that Kate was not right for this role. It's not so much a true New England accent (I'm from there), but rather a generic, nasal, anglophilic, mid-Atlantic, upper-class affectation. Rose Kennedy spoke that way too. And anyway, perhaps Kate's essential persona was too tough and flinty to convincingly play such a fragile woman. Thanks for insights.

  • Wow that was some flick!

  • Ms. Hepburn gave clsssic performances in Alice Adams, Morning Glory,

The Philadelphia Story, Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, Lion In Winter,

and On Golden Pond but to me Katharine Hepburn's greatest performance was in this brilliant film.

  • This movie was on one morning and I ended up starting in the middle of it, well close to the end of it. I thought it was a good movie, so I looked it up to see if it was going to air again and set the DVR to record it. However, I decided to watch the rest of it, just to see if I was interested. The ending made me so creeped out that I "unrecorded" it. However watching the rest of the scenes now makes me want to find it on the DVR and record it again.

  • The cast from Heaven!

  • argh why did the video have to end before the final line!?

  • What an incredible scene. Just masterful. RIP Sidney Lumet.

  • CHECK OUT LONG DAYS JOURNEY INTO NIGHT (OF THE UNDEAD) IT IS A HILARIOUS SPOOF OF THIS FILM. ITS SO FUNNY I CANT EVEN DESCRIBE IT

  • This woman can act. Without question one her her finest. Actually I did think she was even better in Lion In Winter becauseit showed her talents with the biting wit as well and tragedy. You have to give her room, some real writing and a fine supporting cast. Both dramas did that.

  • Hepburn's performance in this film is the apex of her great career.

  • I saw the London production few years back with Jessica Lange was superb! Also, Paul Rudd...

The material is wonderful. Agonizing. I felt like I was sitting in the room with this dysfunctional family, watching all the backbiting & picking. It was a very memorable experience.

  • Katharine Hepburn gives the greatest performance of her career noted for brilliant work in Long Day's Journey Into Night

  • "im going to be a nun!"

  • As for Miss Hepburn, no American actress can go further. Jason Robards and Dean Stockwell are more than brilliant and Mr. Richardson is quite a ham, as his character requires The definite version of this O Neill s play

  • Great play, great movie, but what torture...I admire O'Neill's art a good deal, but watching enough of this makes me glad there are also playwrights like Neil Simon.

  • Wtfff, where's the amazing last line? =/

  • this is by far my favorite hepburn movie. she deserved the best actress oscar for this.

  • All four leads are stunning. They put today's young actors to shame.

  • This is Hepburn's greatest performance and that's saying a lot.

  • i do love her so lol

  • omg is she dragging around her wedding dress? i loved the book, so haunting.

  • Congratulations mike, you've completely missed the point and misunderstood the performance, which ranks among the greatest ever put on film. I know it must be a lot simpler to go through life being the kind of person who CANNOT understand this sort of thing so I don't pity you at all.

  • "I never knew her to drown herself in it as deeply before...pass that bottle, Jamie..."

  • Katherine Hepburn's androgeny is indeed slightly palpable, and her acting is (brilliantly) contrived, which is why she was one of the last great stylized actresses. Watching her in this movie, and Richardson as well, really makes us appreciate the pre-Method brilliance and beauty of that almost lost school of formalized thespianism, which had it's incredible exquisite rewards. So, Mike, you're right and wrong.

  • Just wondering -- But what about Method actors don't you like? Are we talking Method, as in Stanislavsky's actual teachings, or the stereotype of Method, which is that "Method actors play themselves in every role"?

I thought Hepburn was great in this role, but it would have looked better onstage.

  • If you folks love this play by Eugine O' Neill and live in the east coast. you should visit the summer cottage in New London Connecticut. I got an eerie feeling standing the library a feeling of sadness, well that is because i read the play my brother just wanted to go home, he didn't not understand what the Tyrone family was going through. My trip to the summer cottage is priceless well worth the 2 and half hour drive.

  • Katherine Hepburn is my idol. She is so brilliant and so lovely. A truly beautiful woman. Not just pretty, but truly beautiful.

  • How do you conclude Hepburn looks like a man in drag? How you see that is something in your mind. I don't see stale or contrived -- that's why they call it acting!

  • Let me clarify, my last comment was directed to mike.

  • @musicalqueen101 she was one hell of an actress and a very unique one at that, where are the hepburns of today?

  • @musicalqueen101 She was quoted as saying "Of course, I have an angular face, an angular body and, I suppose, an angular personality..." She was one of the all-time greats!

  • This film was fucking excellent!!! Katharine Hepburn was superb...as always.

  • @Bez1960 all 4 of them were absolutely dynamic... this has to be the closest you can get to feeling like you're watching legitimate theater while watching a movie

  • @bphutchins Yes, I agree. Watching the movie you could believe you were watching it on stage. It is a very claustrophobic experience...she was robbed of the Oscar, because her performance in this was possibly her finest ever. So gritty, very real. A family torn apart by addictions and miserliness.

  • Perhaps for the only time in her career, Kate was not Kate. I think she knew that.

  • i've never seen kate play a part so well breaking the katharine hepburn sterotype of roles wow i was sooooo impress absolutly worth watching

  • Cad

  • huh?

  • I believe you mean, "Best Play Ever." If you are unable to see to heartwrenching beauty in this, I pity you. You are missing one of life's finest experiences.

  • I could not agree with you more. Superb.

  • thanks for posting i need to do an essay soon on this play so thank you

  • Thanks for the post, very helpful with my essay. Lol.

  • unbelievable that you have this stuff..thank you forever

  • I love this movie!

  • I love that film, its a wonderful work of Miss Hepburn.
