  • For god sake guys, you can't compare travis barker to buddy rich. They are two completley different drummers. And why travis barker anyway?? hes not even at the highest standard. If you guys think Travis barker is good, you should really check out these guys........

    1) TONY ROJESTER JR

    2) JOJO MAYER

    3) THOMAS PRIDGEN

  • Matt Cameron could be up there as well

  • I just had a quick fantasy about JOHN BONHAM being up there as well having a three way ' Battle ' ,now i have to go change my pants.

  • Animal WA WA WA!

  • I've been playing and listening to music for over half a century. I don't presume to know who the best drummer of all time is; all I know is these guys can bang 'em. Great stuff. Listen & enjoy!

  • @BobG127 Fk Yeaaahhh !!! , couple more years and they'll be almost as good as me :) heh heh heh

  • The only two drummers I can even think come in this class is Neal Peart and Mike Portnoy! For today's drummers that is!

  • i can't help but laugh in joy!

  • not bad for old guys but both would get killled today by travis barker or even lars ulrick

  • @4against1 slow this video to half speed and you have a travis barker vs. lars ulrich drum battle.

  • @vampirebunnyrat probably even slower than half speed for those two :)

  • @4against1 You're...............retarded.......

  • @4against1 hahaha fool!

  • @4against1 I feel legitimately sorry for you.

  • It's kind of one of those things that is pounded in all drummer's heads at birth .. that Lars and Buddy Rich are the greatest drummers of all time. Obviously Lars, not at all..he's a great tennis player. Buddy, definitely is one of a kind. But, at some point, you gotta get out of the past - Tony Williams...even in the 70's was better than Buddy Rich - he pretty much started Fusion. Vinnie Colaiuta - Best studio drummer around. Mike Mangini - from another planet. It's all opinion though.

  • Honestly, in this clip, Ed totally played better. buddy just moved around more. Still, I think Buddy is amazing though!

  • It's never a fair fight against Buddy, but I was surprised at how well Shaughnessey held his own. The nature of the Tonight Show band hardly ever gave him the chance to jam like here; I wish Johnny had given him the chance to shine more often.

  • holy god! How the fuck?

  • I'm humbled every time I watch this. All us drummers have been in recovery since he went off the scene! I have some tribute clips to him on here myself but I'll be the first to admit there will never be another Buddy Rich. Never.

  • WWWHHHAAAATTTTT TTTHHHEEEE FFFUUUCCCCKKKK!!!!! O.O

  • I don't care how good you are as a drummer, if you're around during Buddy Rich's time you don't get into a drum battle with him unless you're just doing it for fun. Buddy's gonna, "Win," every time. No one could match him. I remember my jaw hitting the ground when I saw Buddy live in '82. It was UN-Real. (But Ed Shaughnessy was pretty darned good, I'll give him that. And the two of them seemed to respect and maybe even like each other.)

  • @TheArfdog it's called a drum solo

  • It just sounds like a pair of machine guns...

  • I mean it's just fast drumming... there's no real beat to it. Who watches this and feels anything from it? Besides being impressed about the speed?

  • @TheArfdog The beat is certainly there, and easily heard. You just have to listen for it. The bass sets the beat and the rest just follows it, albeit at a very rapid pace. Buddy Rich was the all time best. There wasn't even a close second.

  • @sssmre all time best at that time, yeah. There are many better now. But i'm sure many have learned from him.

  • @randylikesdrums I respectfully disagree. Buddy set a standard that no one can reach, and shouldn't try. Today's drummers, while many of thme are excellent, cannot hold a candle to Buddy.

  • @randylikesdrums "all time best at that time, yeah. There are many better now. But i'm sure many have learned from him."

Unlike Rock guitar, that has progressed immeasurably from the 60's and 70's, the evolution of Jazz drumming (or drumming PERIOD) seems to have stopped after Buddy Rich - definitely from a hand speed standpoint. I've conducted many searches on YouTube for current and past Jazz and Rock drummers, and they all seem boring and slow compared to BR...

  • @TheTranslator100 I understand how you feel. Everybody has their own preference and opinion.

  • @randylikesdrums

I forgot to add; they all seem boring and slow compared to BR - unless it's Ed Shaughnessy or a Jazz drummer at that level, which there aren't too many of even today...

  • WOW, two great drummers! :D

  • Buddy wins every battle. Ed is amazing as well. INFRECKINCREDIBLE.

  • Ed is great, simply one of best of all time. To be one-tenth as great as Ed would make anyone - one of the best drummers in the world today.

Ask Ed who was the greatest of all time, Ed would just smile and say... "Buddy is... Buddy". Ed loved to hear Buddy play and no-one cheered harder for Buddy than Ed, when Buddy was on the the Tonight Show. There was "a lot of love and respect between those two men". When either of them played, it was music lovers that were the "winners". - RDBruns

  • Buddy wins but shaughnessy holds his ground well

  • Buddy wins!

  • i respect him but just because he influenced travis....

  • yes Buddy Richs GOAT title was not at risk, but still two masters on drums, a great video thank you for sharing this!

  • Ed Shaughnessy=Copy Cat

  • @KReMiFaSoLaTeDo KReMiFaSoLaTeDo= fails at life

  • Even Ed Shaughnessy sounds sloppy next to Buddy Rich,I mean come on he's the master of the single stroke. It's like a friggin kung fu master!

  • @vic100192 u mean is shit

  • @vic100192 In your opinion. From a technical sense, these guys are factually in another league.

  • @vic100192 Please do not post when you're on something.

  • @vic100192 go home he has nothing on these guys lol

  • poor ed, he had no chance

  • The two people that thumbed down this video attempted to beat Buddy Rich

  • @giggitygoo42 No, those two people didn't like the video.

  • @XxStrongDrums1996xX because they lost to Buddy Rich

  • best crossover

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh no puede seeeer posiblee pero impossible is nathing!

  • Epic!

  • Amen, no need to write another comment.

  • ed still holds his own... hardly

  • Buddy Rich is my new hero

  • 1:09 - Could that be ez rolla, one of many dnb/jungle breaks?

  • back in the day when i WAS a drummer,i played Buddy's albums day and night..and had a set up in a rehearsal space where i could play along ( up until the solos anyway..LOL)... years later i had the GREAT fortune of seeing him several times, and even got a drumstick from him( it's what drummers did back then..lol).I shook his hand when thanking him and it felt like my hand was put into a vice grip..LOL. Buddy... was the ONLY one who could make a set of drums BREATH.The legendary BEST EVER.

  • Buddy rich is like the Chuck Norris of drums.

  • Over under cross over.

  • my god!

& why on earth would you cut it out right when peaks??

  • A tip of the hat to Shaugnessy here for going up against Buddy. That has to be so hard.

  • HOLY FUCK

  • New drummer enqiring:The Rev,Joey Jordison,Mike Portnoy

  • @SitocawithSorento The Rev? Are you talking about the guy from Avenged Sevenfold?

  • @MattHatter yeah

  • Shhiiiiiittt... I dont think I've ever seen Buddy make a mistake. It's like he was put on earth to drum!

  • @braino2000 Watch "Buddy Rich on why he doesn't use match grip" He fucks up and screams "Shit!" In the middle of playing. It's actually pretty funny to watch.

  • Scorpion it is actually amazing to me that you can call the best drummer to ever sit down behind a drumset(Buddy Rich) a retard and say that he has sloppy singles.... Ive never heard anything that stupid in my entire life...

  • LOL. Anyone can play a simple and steady groove, kid. Even you could. Hell, even Travis Barker and Joey Jordison! When you encounter a newbie kid in a music store the chances are that hes trying to lay down a groove. This is operating on another level. This is some superhuman rudimental fast-thinking brilliant playing thought and performed on the spot. A completely different level.

  • it is hardeer to play a simple groove with soul then it is to play these fast sloppy singles, there is a major difference between a simple rock beat played by the kid at guitar center you mentioned and somebody like steve gadd, it is musch easier to disguise talent when you play fast and sloppy like this

  • Yes, of course it is. Especially those "sloppy -cough cough- singles". I'd love to see you playing that "sloppyness" like that - since it is so much simplier and basic when related to a simple, single mundane groove. Don't you wanna prove your point by posting a video of yourself doing it? Imagine how many doubtful mouths and minds you would shut (mine included...). That would be awesome (and historic).

  • The only thing sloppy is your dumb ass

  • @manliter EXACTLY

  • @tomesvids4u EXACTLY!!

  • I'll be paciently waiting for this simple video of you playing those "sloppy" single strokes like THAT to finally be able to prove your (no doubt) "controversial" point! :)

  • rofl sloppy.. i guarentee you it is a lot easier to play a simple groove than it is to play 20 beats a second. it takes just as much creativity to play the drums like these guys do as it does to play something soulful. besides, i think you are the only one out of 37244 viewers that thinks this is sloppy. youre just jealous. not everybody has the kind of talent to play the drums like these guys do.

  • I challenge you to perform that very short Buddy Rich armcrossings alone without sounding utterly sloppy and troubled! Maybe you'll get it. Some day in time...maybe, there will be some hope...maybe...perhaps...who knows the future after all? :o)

  • the only reason it may seem sloppy is because they arent being repetitive, thus you arent expecting what they are going to do next because they are completely improvising what theyre doing. its a drum battle. its just like any other battle. i guess you never heard of battling though. they arent necessarily playing songs, just competing their skill against each other.

  • awesome. Two old guys having a drum battle. Just kidding. Respect. I wish I could play that well. Maybe when Im 70 like those guys. HAHA. Nah. Awesome solo

  • People should've pissed Buddy off more often so then he could show us what he could REALLY do more often. Some of the stuff he does here is simply breathtaking and hard to believe. :)

  • this is insane...Which one's rich?

  • i believe he is the one with the silver drums

  • you DONT tug on supermans cape you dont spit in TO the wind you DONT pull the mask off the old lone ranger AND YOU DONT GET INTO DRUM BATTLES WITH BUDDY RICH EVER!

  • @chuckkenn if only his name was jim

  • Joey Jordison?? Dude- what the hell are you talking about?? This is jazz music not rock. Jazz is way harder than rock music--ask any drummer who plays. Hell, ask Joey and he'll pronbably tell you that Ed and Buddy would blow him away

  • ok...umm....not even a competition.joey jordison is a messy drum basher...not even comparable to buddy rich...maybe you should learn about drumming before you make ridiculous accusasions like that...any jazz drummer could blow all most ALL rock drummers...only carl palmer and maybe jeff pocaro or teri bozzio would be close to competition

  • Comment removed

  • *EVERYONE in this WORLD... hunf :/

  • Probably EVERYONE in this would have their head chopped off their body with Buddy being so ridiculously and mercylessly competitive like at that night.

  • Buddy's last in-take grinded the greatly talented Mr. Shaughnessy. Cutting him in two pieces. That was a GOOD battle. Nonetheless. ;)

  • Well said MattHatter!

  • now buddy rich is a drummer!

  • That was blindingly awesome. Anybody comparing rock drummers to pros like this are nuts. These guys could repeat these solos a hundred times exactly the same way. They were paid for more than just improvising.

  • Ed Shaughnessy has class. From what I can see, he was matching Buddy round for round...pulled away, the crowd cheered and Buddy went into over drive and took to his left hand...my eyes just watered watching these great drummers!

  • enough of the pissing match, listen to JoJo Mayer. enjoy!

  • Jojo would throw his sticks away, shocked with Buddy's awesomely clean, hyper fast and greatly interesting rudimental combinations. Jojo is awesome, be he doesn't shock me like Buddy for minutes in a row, non-stop. He has his moments (a couple of pretty cool things which are no longer than a couple seconds).

  • I agree with everything you said, cadaverr. Jojo can't compete -- especially in sheer musicality.

  • Thanks man! I'm back from some days off and I thank you for the kind words. Throw anyone there in that situation and they'd get grinded to death. Tony Royster, Colaiuta, Virgil Donati (yes, even Donati!!!), Steve Smith, Morello, Jojo Mayer, Rabb, anyone. Buddy was a rudimental beast. A creative overkill, always ready to eat anyone alive any day, any time. The accents alone presented here are just mind blowing.

  • Glad to have you back, cadaverr -- now you can get to answering my questions on your note counts!

  • I love practising my rudiments but my head just explodes desesperately trying to figure out his unique drum brilliance. What makes everything this man played sooo damn good. A marvel.

  • Could you imagine where that drum battle would stop with two more in takes in advance? I mean, Buddy's 3rd one was, easily one of the most impressive things I've ever seen and heard in my WHOLE life. It doesn't look human at all! Imagine how could that drum battle end like with it being a little longer? Would that drum kit have resisted such insanity? I can't imagine what Buddy would have performed right after. I just can't imagine that.

  • Me, neither. Buddy was on fire that night. And he only seemed to get faster, and more insanely complex and musical (speed can be musical, after all) as the battle raged on.

  • By the way, cadaverr, I counted one of Flo Mournier's solos -- his max seemed to be seven notes per hand per second, and he rarely hit even that. He cruised at 6.6 in that solo, as far as I could tell. I also counted the "Roddy, Part 1" solo that's available on Drummerworld. His max was 9 notes per hand per second. Not bad, but not Buddy.

  • At half speed here, at parts Buddy is as fast or faster than Flo at full speed in that solo.

  • Isn't Joey Jordison the guy from Slipknot? I can't remember but if he is...no...please don't mention his name alongside Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Keith Moon, John Bonham, Ginger Baker, or any of the others. I've seen the drummer from Slipknot and I've seen it all before. Nothing new. Fast double bass, etc. There's a difference between having a gift that separates you from everybody else and just being really good at technicality.

  • i wouldnt put keith or ginger in there...maybe not even bonham...but they're all better than any modern drummer

  • Buudy Rich is the BEST!

  • I didn't know Ed S. was that good. It was cool that he could hold his own. Buddy Rich's speed was inhuman. " And still World Champion Buddy Rich." Two great drummers.

  • itd be cool if buddy rich, ed shaughnessy, neil peart, joey jordison, and chris adler all had a big drum off thing:)

  • Joey Jordison would need to be stripped down to a basic kit...he would easily be the first to give up I guarantee you...he's nowhere near being the best rock or jazz drummer...Peart has proven he can hold his own on a basic kit...to everyone except rich or shaughnessy. Chris Adler...sorry, no way. The three others besides Buddy and Ed would not even make it halfway through.

  • no no no no. They would all have their own unique sets, as giving them all the same one (like one of those basic pieces of shit) would make it unfair (not to mention much less entertaining). And of course joeys nowhere near the best rock or jazz drummer, because he ISN'T a rock or jazz drummer! hes a metal drummer! (and is one of the best of the sort if not THE best)

  • replace joey jordison with john bonham and then it would be even cooler because joey SUCKS! well he doesnt suck but he sure as hell isnt up there with buddy rich or neil peart.

  • why does that even matter? hes one of todays best drummers, so why take him out? altho adding in john would make it better. id also add in the drummer from dragonforce aswell.

  • Why the fuck is the maggot drummer even mention here? He's a shit drummer for fucks sake and anybody who even compares him next to someone like buddy clearly has the IQ of a fucking goldfish.

  • Sorry I used profanity but I get pissed at maggots constantly comparing him to truly talented drummers.

  • holy crap

    that's all have to say

  • Ed Shaughnessy may not be as good as Buddy but he's a hell of a lot better than everybody else living today. My god these two guys in this video are FUCKING PHENOMENAL HATS OFF TO BOTH OF THEM.

  • Buddy forever!!!

  • Yeah. Buddy definitely was ALWAYS holding back against friends (especially against Krupa). This is a well-known fact actually.

If Buddy started his ultra fast single stroke rolls through the kit, Ed would be KILLED "on demand". At least here he can have some space to breath (and develop a (or "some") nice drum solo). Hehe.

  • there is a solo where krupa does his thing...ehh...and then buddy starts with this blinding hand-to-hand cresendo and just put krupa to shame within about 10 secs...so he didn't always hold back....he couldn't

  • far out!!! HAHAHAHA it's too bad we won't be seeing drum battles between guys at this level in the future...these are two of the great greats of drummers. I agree that Buddy is holding back here though. Ed can match Buddy to a point.

Hehe.

  • Eds good but he's not as clean as Buddy. You can see that from the for couple of bars of his first solo where his sticks touch. Big no no is jazz.

  • Ed is good, but Buddy is da man.

  • There are so many great drummers out there who once were and now are. But NO ONE and I repeat NO ONE has been able to clear the bar that Buddy set. Buddy had it all...speed, tone, you name it the man had it! This was the gift he had. Some of the things Keith Moon could do blow my mind but I rethought everything once I saw film footage of Buddy. One of those people who can move you to friggin tears with their intense talent!

  • who cares about speed as long as the groove is in time complex and interesting, art verdi or whatever his name is, is more into racing drums than playing them Im nit a big buddy fan but at least he had more artism wiht his speed!

  • Oh my. Today is the first time I've ever heard of Buddy Rich and I've now watched 4 solos of his. I'm gobsmacked, he's truly incredible.

    Also I agree with pablo1911

  • INCREDIBLE

  • Buddy Rich = Greatest drummer ever!

  • The day that Virgil Donati has the same hand and arms habilities of Buddy Rich, I'll certainly drop dead (that's still to happen... - an I've seen more than 10 different virgil donati videos right here, on youtube).

Buddy could play whatever he wanted, and totally effortless. Those arm crossing speeds are sick just for themselves.

  • Cadaverr, my good man ... looks like you'll be living forever.

  • Yeah I agree some dude mentioned virgil and I wasnt impressed at all.Even niel pert is better.

  • Buddy was far cleaner and he was even playing around by passing his left hand over and under his right arm. Just having fun... Whereas Shaughnessy was all business and was trying real hard just to keep up. A great performance and effort by both, but Buddy makes it seem effortless....

  • buddy riches drums sound like cofee cans man that guy could not make one grovving beat!

  • There are some videos claiming that Art Verdi is the fastest drummer in the world. That MIGHT be true, but he lacks the versatility that Buddy Rich has.

  • Verdi is nowhere near as fast as Buddy. And he has none of Buddy's complexity.

  • Very true!

  • Gene Krupa of course.

  • I heard Buddy Rich is the 2nd world best drummer... Can anyone tell me who's nº1?

  • True boomer, but these two could both do amazing solos and keep rhythm with a band. These two are some of the greatest with Buddy Rich being the greatest of all time by far. The greatest living drummer is Neal Peart.

  • uuuummmm.... what? best? everyone knows buddy was the master!!! neil is good but he's no buddy by a long shot... sorry pal

  • Read my comment more carefully senor. I said Neil Peart is the greatest LIVING drummer. Buddy is the greatest of all time.

  • excuse me my mistake...

  • gee, i guess vinnie colaiuta, terry bozzio, bill bruford, chester thompson, steve gadd, and about a couple of hundred other drummers far, far better and more interesting than peart can hang up their sticks now. you poltroon.

  • carl palmer...not neil peart

  • I agree with Scandian, these are two amazing drummers!

  • funny story i read in an Ed S. interview... ed asked buddy to promise not to do the over under thing buddy made ed promise to not do the indian takita thing... buddy got in the moment and forgot but ed kept his promise... o well... funny to think buddy actually felt intimidated by someone elses thing eh?...

  • was buddy rich mean or something?

  • evry big band jazz group leader was a bit dick... they had the attitude

  • Incredible stuff! Saw them both live, Ed was much cleaner and I believe faster. Buddy was Buddy--- a showman (cross-overs)and loud! Great video!

  • Ed actually falls out of rhythm a number of times here. He gets a bit sloppy on the mounted toms and the floor rolls. He's struggling. And he's nowhere near as fast as Buddy is here, imo.

  • Struggling? you're kidding right? Two great drummers!

Know that Dennis Chambers has 'em both licked if you're stuck on Buddy's talent.

  • Yes, he falls out of rhythm several times. He is an amazing drummer, but he does not keep up with Buddy here. I disagree about Chambers -- he doesn't have Buddy's ability to spontaneously create such extreme phrasing; neither does he have Buddy's stamina, imo.

  • ok... just stop!! dont sound dumb ...please

  • god damnit that's great....cheak out the side burns :P

  • Buddy Rich is one of the greatest drummer that have ever lived....

    He is a legend!!

  • l2p2song

  • both amazing drummers

  • i agree with justin 2353 ed's goood but next to buddy (even though buddy's a dickhead) he doesn't compare

  • Buddy wins that one, but saying that, ti wasnt often that buddy was beaten in a drum beattle.

  • buddy is too good

  • damn!!!!!! i give up!! i`m not gonna play drums no more after i saw this video..

  • Shaughnessy almost keeps up... the first 2 sets anyways... i love the Shaugnessy ride....

  • I've never seen something like this, they're totally crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ed almost keeps up! But you can tell Buddy's holding back, and Ed looks like he's gonna pass out. But still to even sit next to Buddy and look that good is amazing!

  • That's fucking amazing!

  • BUDDYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!
