Johnny Rodriguez has a really good version of this song. He sings part of it in Spanish and, of course, pronounces the words correctly. It is on here with the title of Johnny Rodriguez #1. I guess the poster didn't know the name of the song.
I sing about the people murdered by illegal aliens and replaced in jobs. I sing about thev AMerican male both black and white replaced by illegal alien workers. I sing about the common citizen that thought his government would protect him/her. I sing about the millions of illegal aliens in the voter pool. I sing about the racism of a country on the otherside of the US border !
this song is about everyone that is poor and tries to survive - it means even more now than when it was written - its even better in spanish..christy moore is a great artist
Ah, isn't Christy Moore such a noble minstrel for all the downtrodden! Golly, what big ideals he has! This wanker should be thrown into the Rio Grande.
tenor, you loathsome rot, what loose screw gives you the gaul to dare and disparage this song, hispanics, or those who support their cause. Oh do they come up here to america and work longer hours for lower wages? do they undercut your pay and "steal" your jobs, if they do its because of one of three things, your own cowardice, Greed or laziness. and their lack thereof. if they had any other choice i am sure they would gladly take it, but because you happen to have a boot up,
Listen up, working class people in this country had to work for years, we had to unionize, strike, picket, and litigate, and fight tooth and nail to get fair treatment from a bunch of rich robber barons, and now they are displacing us and giving away our jobs to cheap illegal, black market labor-
cont'd- and you say I'm a coward because I don't want to give up the standard of living we working class Americans fought for for decades, just so the upper class can benefit from abusing people who don't know any better, and then salve their own sanctimonious egos about the illegals coming here for a better life?
And I love how easily you liberals justify the exploitation of the illegal alien worker in this country, yes it may better than the Third World, but its still piss poor compared to how most upper class suburbanites live, so why don't you actually respect the illegals and not only demand amnesty, but demand that they be paid the same wage as the white legal citizens whose jobs they stole. But then what good would it be to have they here? The benefit of cheap labor being gone...
@LastFreedomFighter Thank you ! I also love how there are no songs for the American citizens murdered by many of the same workers they sing about and the numbers of fake weddings for cash ,drug cartels and the drug deaths of our children !
@Atlantaminuteman because no one cares about them. america is the most hated country on earth. due to inward comments you have just expressed. you reap what you sow.
@Atlantaminuteman because no one cares about them. america is the most hated country on earth. due to inward comments you have just expressed. you reap what you sow.
And btw, check out the statistical correlation between poverty and unemployment in black communities and the importation of Third World labor and export of American jobs to Third World countries, you'll see that is one of the major causes of the poverty among black Americans, they demanded too much money to give the robber barons in the Multinational corporations the optimal profit margins they desired.
The words are: The sky plane caught fire over Los Gatos Canyon, A fireball of lightning, and shook all our hills, Who are all these friends, all scattered like dry leaves? The radio says, "They are just deportees" Not: The sky plane caught fire over THE Los Gatos Valley, Like a fireball of lightnin', it plunged to the ground, Who are all those friends, lyin' 'round like dead leaves? The radio says, "They were just deportees" Christy's version lack all the original poetry & adds not'in'
I'm a huge Christy Moore, but this is a Mexican/American song. It needs at least one of those accents to do it justice. Christy's Irish accent sounds frankly incongruous imo.
The best version I've ever heard was by Julie Felix live on stage in '79. She has real emotion and a cry in her voice as she annunciates the Mexican names - and she doesn't get the words wrong either!
"Adios mis amigos an' Jesus Maria"?? Huh? Don't think Woody was singing about ladyboys!
Got to agree with you that the Julie Felix version is the best I've heard, shame it's not on youtube. I've got it on an old 45 so I'll see if I can arrange something for on here.
I wish I still had it. Some years ago all my 45s and albums were stolen. I had loads of Felix, Baez, Leadbelly, Guthrie, Seeger, Seeger and Guthrie together live, Paxton, Lightfoot... and loads more.
Do send me a message when you get the video up and I'll pass the link around.
I see that's uploaded - it sounds very good all right! My favourite version so far is the live Baez/Dylan version from 1976 but that's almost like a different song..
To those who object to Christy singing it - that just comes across to me as elitism & snobbery... I like this version too (as as to keeping the words exactly the same lol - it's a tradition of musicians to change those!
Check the panel to the right for the Emeralds version. The Young Christy was on that show, You'll see him in the crowd or at the end. This was his first breakthrough appearance, maybe he has a fond memory of this song as sung by the Emeralds ( - sung with feeling in Irish accents).
- Will look for the originals, always willing to be educated.
The crash happened on 29 January 1948 - just over 60 years ago. Have things changed much?
Today our Trade Union and Labour movement should honour the dead by speaking up in defence of the immigrant workers of today. We can mourn for the dead but must fight like hell for the rights of the living
This is the best Guthrie song of all. The best version I've ever heard was from one of our members at the Bothy Folk Club in Southport in the 60's. He just sang it so hauntingly. Sorry can't remember his name though. We had some great nights there on Sundays
It's a Woodie Guthrie song from 1948 about a plane crash he heard about that year, but Woody was too ill by then to record it. Joan Baez signs it with Bob Dylan - wish there was a recording of her signing it alone. This Christy Moore version is the best I've seen on YOUTUBE so far.
Top class from Christy. The morons who cheered Bill O'Reilly on and off the Late Late Show stage a few weeks back could do worse than listen to this song and think of the situation so many of their own people find themselves in in America.
I have it on one of her albums (that will tell you it was a long time ago)can't remember which one though, but I'm sure there was no one singing with her.
no problem TomA. Christy really does put his heart into his songs. Although I love his version of The Ballad of Jim Larkin and Avondale.A real Irish treasure!

I love all of these hispano-files. They romantisize the struggles,of ileagles but they don't live within a 1000 miles of them.

Woody never recorded it. He orignially wrote it as a poem, and a man by the name of Martin Hoffman, actually put the melody to it.
