It was the same block as the bug engine, but it was bored and/or stroked out to 1.5-1.6L and the accessories-plumbing was reworked to make it sit flatter. It was also fitted with fuel injection in 1968. The bus never got this version of the VW engine, though the block might have been the same. It did get something called the "type 4 engine" in 1972, which had a similar low profile and displaced 1.7L.

do these type 3 cars have the same motors as the bug bus cars of the same era? It looks totally different than a bus 1600 setup?
