Zager&Evans, Lincoln, Nebraska wrote and released the original. Geeez, it's much better than this version. Is it the same song?

It is and it is not. It's a song based on Zager and Evans' song. As it is the case with many covers made by Laibach (take Opus Dei or Geburt einer Nation). They sometimes make only delicate changes (like translation of One Vision/Geburt... or omission of some words in Opus Dei), and sometimes they write their own lyrics, as it was the case with "In The Year 2525". I believe both versions are great.
