great idea , inspiring. Keep inventing and building stuff, dont listen to negative comments just focus on the positive, you are sooo gifted , my regards.
Not bad. I bet one more barrel-half would get you a little higher in the water. And if you fixed the output hose to something rigid (PVC pipe maybe) and put it on a hinge, you could probably steer it like a rudder.
You have to crawl before you can walk! and you will never know unless you try. I once mounted a lawnmower engine to the top of a hover vaccum cleaner, to use it as a pump to power a small inflateable, that was filled with marine foam. a my titanic so to speak. people would get a grin, as some things just dont work well, at first, but then they all want a ride on it when your done. Keep up the good work, and keep dreaming, you never know where this will lead you. ps..great idea for a cheap raft.
Lucky! I built a !0 by 5 or 6 Raft with 2 foam pontoons and a lot of cedar decking and screws, yes its great but sadly, i have to paddle! did you make the motor or buy it?
I like the idea behind your home built vessel. i think a fixed (jet) pvc pipe would produce much more thrust than a flimsly hose does . a crude rudder could be made from plywood, attached with some short chain or washers. keep building stuff though you rock
G'day. like your boat a lot. don't worry 2 much about the whiners, you've done a ripper job. i own an old fibreglass canoe that is propelled by a modified 26cc weedeater (weedwhacker to Americans) and sail on the warrego river in S.W. QLD, outback Australia. me and my cobber want to build a light barge to tow behind the canoe to transport camping gear, and i came across your film. am very impressed. keep up the good work.
It's nice , but on the calm water as your pond , ....how's about deep ocean ?
My suggestion .
Put 8 barrels like that tie together ( don't cut the barel , tight up air in barel never sunk , even turn over boat ) , using same pump machine , build jet -stream to push the home-made boat by PVC pipes ....
turn left or right or backward by moving the direction of PVC pipe right in the water as Navy PBR ( PAROL BOAT IN RIVER )
At least five people out of those who have seen and rated this video were traumatized by life-or-death experiences in which they ran out of gas in the middle of a huge lake, while riding poorly put-together, gas-guzzling boats that they themselves did not make.
I notice there are some people here commenting on how this is inefficiency, and madness.
Madness?
This... is... GENIUS!!!
Ben, this is a totally awesome invention. I mean, anyone can buy a motor boat, but you made this yourself. How cool is that?!
As a (wannabe) fellow engineer, I salute you, LightersKivesGuns. I may be an environmentalist, but I also understand that all engineers have got to start somewhere. So, I've no complaints about the engine. Plus, I didn't come to whine.
There is perhaps a better design. For instance, the boat needs some length across, I think, which will help in directing it. And surely the boat needs a radder. Better not to cut the barrels. But then, of course, dont connect the frame to the barrels with nails!! Make a frame around them, or use a rope.
The idea of moving the boat with a water pump is very good. The outlet could have been made with pvc pipes. Then you should get better direction. And dont forget the radder.
tanke the hose and divide into two seperate hoses and put one in each of the 50 gallon drums and put a rutter in the front instead on the rear mmmkkkk and ive got more ideas that would be better.....but nice pup i use a out bord instead way easier
Its a bit waste of energy. But this can be improved later to be more efficient. make it more rigid for the intake and output tubes would make it more faster. I have done this before using the same water pump to run a wooden canoe. But since you boat is more lighter you can easily get 5-6MPH.
Just think what this thing could do with a full size boat. If you can build that frame; you can build a small wooden boat and use the pump to power it. There are free plans on the internet, look under free boat plans. But, please make sure that you always take someone with you when you run the boat; remember its better safe than sorry after the fact.
Good thinking dude!!! Two thumbs up!!!!!

Not bad dude, I would however seal the top of the barrels so you don't get swamped

You need to make a nozzle at the end to build up pressure and ejection velocity.

duct tape a stick end to end on your nozzle and make a piviot point on your boat better steering method:)

What you should have done is nail or screw each end to a plank so you can steer
