I completely agree Jerryhal1. Lava Man ran fractions of 22 3/5 and 45 4/5 and still almost won. That is insanely fast for a mile and a quarter. The other 3 of the top 4 finishers were dead closers and all the other speed stopped.
What I'll always remember about this race was the unbelievably gutsy performance by LAVA MAN who ended up running 3rd. Despite all the accomplishments in his storybook career, I think it's this one that best illustrates the heart, gut, and sheer will for which Lava Man is known. He dueled through tough fractions the whole way and didn't want to give up the lead in the final furlong. He had to be vanned off after the race. Most horses would have never been heard from again.

I was fortunate to be at Belmont Park a month later when Borrego destroyed the field in the Jockey Gold Cup.
It's a shame he didn't run as a 5 year old.
