Obviously Joaquin Phoenix can play and sing Johnny Cash pretty damn good. But can Joaquin actually COME UP WITH the shit that Johnny Cash did? The image? The sound (as far as creating it)?, THE LYRICS?

Nah - there is indeed only one Johnny Cash. But Joaquin does indeed walk the walk and talk the talk in the movie. Very talented dude IMO.

Honestly I liked the covers on the soundtrack, and I thought that the similarities between Cash and Phoenix were errily similar, but I felt that Phoenix sounded a little... dead. Nothing against the guy, but just an observation.

i've been listening to the original versions too...and this is pretty good and it's believable. there's a slight slapback echo on the vocals; it deepens the voice for more depth. cash had this great, big-sounding voice. all hats off to the guy for doing it...pretty big shoes to try to fill.

Phoenix is a very talented actor, who obviously has talent for BOTH singing and acting very well. His performance as Johnny Cash is outstanding. Cash lived a hard life with drugs and abuse. He could sing but his acting was worse.
