  • Me arrepio toda vez que eu ouço. Pena que ele não tocou esta quando veio ao Brasil em 2001. DS forever!!!!

  • What does he do at 2:47 ?

  • Once upon a time

I found a lamp with a genie inside

He said he would give me a wish

I showed him a map of the Middle East.

I told him, "bring peace to all those countries"

He said: "This task is very difficult even for me"

I said, "Then let me play guitar, like Mark Knopfler"

He paused and said, "Show me the map again"

  • really art! this is it!

  • You can tell a Gerodie from ordinary people who have to live in the rest of the country by how they respond to this theme tune. :) Love it!

  • Nearly 30 years old and still fantastic - there are loads of versions but this is still the best for me!

  • This song is amazing!!!

  • He is English you scumbag

  • is he from the nort east

  • i am portuguese and i love this song, is so magic!!!!!!!

  • I'm not sure if anybody else has mentioned this...but if you look closely at the music being played from the movie at the Ceilidth; on stage with the "Acetones" playing piano is none other than the wonderful Alan Clark.

I would guess Alan's contribution to Mark's music must be immeasurable.

They are all fantastic musicians, perfect symmetry...led by a true MASTER

  • Stirs the most emotion in me any music can... I can almost hear the ROAR of the toon faithful at the end.

  • Knopfler is one of the best guitar players ever

  • one of the best tunes ever <3

  • @Nen0zz that's exactly right! It's been my all time favourite since I first heard it in '89 or something :-)

  • Hey, but can you imagine Burt Lancaster putting his arm over your shoulder and saying, I want a song for the film, it's got to be good - but low budget - see what you can do.

  • i just loooooove this one :) <3

  • Every time I listen to this song I feel and think of something different, I only hope that I could hear more of this music. No words but stronger than words.

  • the mutz nutz..........

  • theres only one mike ashley!!

  • I don't want to be pedantic, (I'm sorry I am) but isn't there a melody here and a whole load of musicians?

  • Its cool how he took old scottish bagpipe tunes and put it on to guitar amazingly, Also he was born a scot and rasied a geordie not a bad mix id say

  • And Hunagaryan descent :D. What a mix, but it turned out wonderful.

  • my all time favourite guitar piece. Absolutely perfect

  • I stayed on West Coast of Scotland when Local Hero was shot there-- what a good time. Scenes were shot on Loch Morar where I had a boat, at Arisaig, Lochailort, et al. They hired a friend's beach for the scenes with the old man in the hut-- same beach btw that was used in filming of The Highlander. Lovesd it though when we found out Knopfler had done the theme music.

  • One of my favorite movies of all time, I first saw it as a young kid on t.v. and enjoyed simpleness of it. Plus the soundtrack is incredible also. That is incredible that they rented your friends beach for the ending scene.

  • Mark knopfler is a scotsman

  • I agree mate, they are a classy band. As for the Newcastle connection, what's it matter? I'm a Cockney, and I lived there as a kid. I love the place, and the people. We're all English, and as we all know, our music is the BEST.

  • i was minus......

  • God, I wish I was there. But I was four at that time...

  • I was three back then....

Funny to see the roadies are beginning to take away the mics before the song is finished!

  • Good point. But why?

  • On the Brothers in Arms tour they used to do Local Hero at the end of the show and you can see the house lights come up and the roadies dismantle the show round them.... They played to the end as people exited the hall. Then they walked off stage. Dead cool
