great song, dire straits its where i grew up with, still a fan. don't know much about instruments, can anybody tell me what instrument they use at the beginning of the tune(what you hear while you see the cars on the highway going home)?
that GENT Hal L. (Hot/Handsome) is He Scandinavian? He doesN't look British, he's much better with his guitar than Mark and even jOhN I. Hal has lots of SEXy Hair and moves...
He must be at least 1/2 : Swedish, Norwegian, Dutch, Finnish, Danish or maybe German/Austrian, Swiss, etc
I'm not sure if anybody else has mentioned this...but if you look closely at the music being played from the movie at the Ceilidth; on stage with the "Acetones" playing piano is none other than the wonderful Alan Clark.
I would guess Alan's contribution to Mark's music must be immeasurable.
They are all fantastic musicians, perfect symmetry...led by a true MASTER
I do understand wat U r saying. But it is very normal 4 TECHNICIANS 2 pack at the end of the show. I think the camera-man wanted 2 add them in 4 this clip 4 fun. Cheers JT :)
Hey, but can you imagine Burt Lancaster putting his arm over your shoulder and saying, I want a song for the film, it's got to be good - but low budget - see what you can do.
Every time I listen to this song I feel and think of something different, I only hope that I could hear more of this music. No words but stronger than words.
I stayed on West Coast of Scotland when Local Hero was shot there-- what a good time. Scenes were shot on Loch Morar where I had a boat, at Arisaig, Lochailort, et al. They hired a friend's beach for the scenes with the old man in the hut-- same beach btw that was used in filming of The Highlander. Lovesd it though when we found out Knopfler had done the theme music.
One of my favorite movies of all time, I first saw it as a young kid on t.v. and enjoyed simpleness of it. Plus the soundtrack is incredible also. That is incredible that they rented your friends beach for the ending scene.
I agree mate, they are a classy band. As for the Newcastle connection, what's it matter? I'm a Cockney, and I lived there as a kid. I love the place, and the people. We're all English, and as we all know, our music is the BEST.
im a drummer with THE BALDY HOLLY BAND and being a geordie boy myself this track fills me with nothing but pride, it stands as one of the best guitar songs of all time, MARK you`re a genious buddy.

I know. Im originally a cockney and Im so proud of the way Denis and the back room boys have turned that tinkers shed around and given the goerdie pikeys something to be proud of. He loves that song and so do I. Your a bald fat spastic though. Im happy Buddy Holly died.
this is the music at our Newcastle Utd football club, when the boys come out to play a game they are wlcomed with this and it says it all really... local heroes!!
On the Brothers in Arms tour they used to do Local Hero at the end of the show and you can see the house lights come up and the roadies dismantle the show round them.... They played to the end as people exited the hall. Then they walked off stage. Dead cool

Once upon a time
I found a lamp with a genie inside
He said he would give me a wish
I showed him a map of the Middle East.
I told him, "bring peace to all those countries"
He said: "This task is very difficult even for me"
I said, "Then let me play guitar, like Mark Knopfler"
He paused and said, "Show me the map again"
