i love how jike still shows respect for his senior when he raises his hand and signals like an apology if he gets a point (even if it's not a net or edge ball). but i like his last reaction when he won. it's like a big thing for him to beat the veteran.
can someone tell me what the purpose of hopping is on certain blocks? it looks like they bunny hop AFTER the shot is made which leads me to wonder why they do such a thing...
cant believe nobody mentioned 5:32 ! Most Chinese players switch to their bh rubber while smashing but ive never seen it like Ma Lin here! Not only backhand to forehand but also penhold to shakehand. The following smash itself is also as brilliant as it is funny
Zhang's serve may not be cool or tricky like Ma Lin's or Waldner's, but his reverse pendulum has tons of back spin in them, if you watch his match against Kenta.
zhang dioesn't have the massive forehand like ma long and wang liqin ma lin whoiever but he can handle their power which is more important because he has a great backhand punch and loop and his forehand he can get great angles. next number 1?
@jayjaymatt I really wondered how so many people commented about "ZJK not having the massive forehand as Malong/Wangliqin". It's so apparent that ZJK is the Chinese player whose forehand is closest to WLQ's at his prime. Malong's forehand is short of power and he usually borrowed the energy from his opponent's return; and this has long been an issue addressed by Chinese coaches.
@InvinsibleChew its the other way around mate, zhang takes it early on the half volley using the other players power, ma long can generate power from any where off anything. zhang jike is probably better at handling speed coming at him like timo boll, but doesn't generate enough power himself for me.
@jayjaymatt It's actually very obvious when both players are at middle/far range. It's also obvious from how ZJK/Wanghao's and Malong's games against Joo turned out. Malong's forehand is not as explosive but his extreme talent is his fast connection between every strokes, no matter left or right, or the transition from left to right. If you could understand chinese probably you will benefit a lot from chinese commentators from their national team
Zhang Jike reminds me of Jimmy Connors who had no BIG serve and forehand as 2 well-regarded prerequisites for a champion in tennis, and yet who was able to beat powerful loopers such as Bjorn Borg and Ivan Lendl. Zhang’s near-table playing style characterized by forehand loops and backhand blocks (both consistent, fast and spinny ) with good ball placement makes him a very detrimental player against powerful loopers like Ma Lin and Ma Long. ☆☆☆☆☆
@tyoungos Zhang Jike doesn't have a poverful loop? Did you not see him get into forehand to forehand at LONG distances? And I don't think I've ever seen Ma Lin regarded to as a powerful looper. He is a great player and many things can be said about him, but I just don't see him get into too much power play. His style is to win with by playing smart, by being effective and efficient
@tyoungos exactly and I think it would be kinda stupid to have another hard hitter like ma long or ma lin. Zhang jike is something else, good block, consistent loop, decent serve, that makes him a great player, he is my favourite so far, after ma long.
@RayLiotta22 There is no European style. There is only two kind of styles: Hungarian and Chinese. Chinese style is a replica made from the basic Hungarian style from the early 70's. Thanks to this style, top Chinese players are able to perform this high level playing for us to admire.
It is just like the absolute most famous toy in the world, the Rubik's Cube, invented by the Hungarian Ernö Rubik. Made in Hungary, but dominated from an appliers aspect today by Chinese. What is next? Go Hungary!
@Topspinify seems you live in the past. Hungaria may have had great players in the 70s.. but there were also great players from Sweden, France , Germany ..etc and the latter still have great players. Where is Hungary TT nowadays ?
@sabolindale It's getting better and better. For example, Jakab Janos is now playing for Borussia Düsseldorf. Probably the best club in Europe. But really what I said doesn't have anything to do with what you're talking about. I'm just saying some history; modern table tennis was invented by Hungarians.
fuuuucking awesome, zhang jike has a nice game his backhand is really nice, what he just needs to do is learn to better with his forehand because he looses a lot in a forehand fight against the the other chinese, especially ma lin
@oldolchen I agree that his forehand was kind of bad in this match, but I don't think it's generally a problem. His forehand is still a great shot. This was actually a rather poor match from Zhang Jike in my opinion. He usually beats Ma Lin rather easily. Anyway, it's very fitting that he finally gets his first Pro Tour title. Hopefully, he will occupy his rightful position on the ranking list soon to - he's been the second best player behind Ma Long for almost a year now.

Compared to other Chinese Zhang's forehand is nearly European style...;)
I always like the sound of Ma's footsteps when he tries to reach inaccessible balls...;)
