Saw her in Oakland in 1994.Leo Kottke opened for her.It was at the Paramount theatre and she was awesome.Did a half hour of encore! Love you Chapin.<3
Chapin may be the only artists who can use the word "azure" in a lyric and make it the only word that would have worked in that lyric...she is absolutely the best songwriter of my generation
@whiskeyjack57 Nice catch. I own one, and I love it, but it's not really a performance instrument. I've never seen a musician play it in a major band until ... this. I guess it is a performance instrument.
@kenjames64 That backpacker sure does what they want it to do here. I'm guessing Jennings figured that tweaking a backpacker was more right for this song than a banjo - which it parodies very well. Sometimes there's too much snobbery involved with instruments and artists. It's refreshing to see these guys more concerned with what serves the song. (Levine's guitar is a Martin but it looks like the CF Martin foil logo has been blacked out a bit). Lovely stuff, eh?!
@whiskeyjack57 Levine's guitar is a Martin, you're right. Blacked out, yeah. Can't hide that headstock. It's probably an H or HD-28. As to what you said about Jennings playing a practice guitar: I agree. So you think it's the thinness of sound, the "plunkiness" (ha) that caused him to use it? I've just never seen a Backpacker on a stage in front of 20 thousand people. How about a regular dreadnaught, played close to the bridge?
@kenjames64 I'd guess Levine is playing a Martin OM of some kind. Hard to know what series as they all look the same from a distance. And, you're right. I've never seen a backpacker or a Montana? travel guitar (see the chapin video of Jubilee) in the hands of a professional musician. Apparently, they have a useful tonal spectrum. They sure fit here.
@kenjames64 No band these days. I'm an old folky at heart....think Ian & Sylvia, Kingston Trio, PP&M, Joan Baez, Gordon Lightfoot, John Denver... I play mostly folk music for my own amazement and I'm a little long-in-the-tooth for a band. But thanks for the compliment - in my wildest dreams I'd never have been as good as these guys.
@kenjames64 Ya. I think there's a travel guitar called the "Montana" or something like that. It looks similar to what John's playing in that Jubilee video practice session.
Saw Mary Chapin Carpenter last night in concert at The Midland. This song, "Why Walk When You Can Fly?" brought my dear friend Matthew to my mind. Beautiful lyrics and a good message for us all.
LOVE this song. We minister in area prisons, and we're always looking for music, for words to lead them to know that they can be more...they can do more...they don't have to re-live the mistakes that put them where they are. THIS is gonna be a favorite.
"This song is all true about this life. It also reminds me of the passing of my dear husband, Eric, at the age of 41, in 2007.This song will always be in my heart."
i think it would be amazing to be live at one of her concerts because if she sounds amazing here ,im sure she sound breathtaking when your right there listening to her in the audience
Thank-you for whom ever posted this video, this song has helped me through some very tough times. And now I get to write a paper about it, I'm so excited about it. And it helped to play this song before writing the paper, especially seeing her little interview before the song, it was great!! Thank you all!
Absolutely great !

@whiskeyjack57 it has a very thin sound that seems appropriate here, especially with Duke Levine playing second guitar.
