A tip you can buy a marquetry blade and put an old strings on it and spread it with abrasive polymers (or coffee dust) to saw the strings channels on the nut. you can sand the strings too to give them an irregular shape, appropriated to sand. but your idea with the gauge caliper its good, i will copy it for the frets.

I made it from a set of spark plug feeler gauges. Used a file to notch the teeth.
