  • amazing.......:) Love this song. Seen Dennis so many times in concert and his voice is amazing ....x

  • This is the best version and i've checked the others, whaddya think?

  • thank you , thank you, thank you. i have been searching for this song for years. they did this song on an australian show many years ago..... and brought the house down. i just love this version.

  • A little improvisation on the lyrics......

  • At least they used a "Kookaburra" not a "Mockingbird"

  • My opinion, Dennis's voice and talent is second to none. And that includes Elvis and Sinatra. If you will spend some time to listen to him, you will see what I am saying. I'm not talking about charisma or his stage presence or name recognition. But his beautiful voice and delivery. Dennis never misses a word or a note. Perfection.

  • the best one from dr hook !!! luv it

  • beautiful song, me and my mum used to listen to this all time time :P

  • this is the best way to sing this song.

Just great. I love it ^_^

  • Great song. My folks used to play this a lot when I was young. I think this is one of the best versions.

  • Great song about a great australian bushranger , well he was a bad guy but a legend all the same .... Dr Hook sings the song perfectly

  • The Clancy Brothers do the best version of this song i think

  • I mum has listen to dr hook s song all the time but never heard this one.

  • it was the best song i have listen to.I learnt this song last year and we did a di- scription on the song .

  • Thanks for posting.

I remember this when it came out. The Dr Hook version was very popular in Australia, the band also.

  • listen peeps, it's an irish folk song. The Doc did a job we can all have an opinion on, but it's irish, let it go, and castlemaine, yeah, probably not...

  • no irish man will ever like this song,

    i should know

    i live in castlemaine

  • It likely talks of Castlemaine Australia, not Ireland.

The lyrics are possibly a mix of the story of Jack Donahue and James Doolan.

  • I'm Irish I like it

  • great version of this song. I love the original, but this one like as well.

  • Original version???

  • i adore this song! dennis done a great version!

  • Dr hook did a great job on this song, full credit to them the wild co;onial boys.

  • I dont know it sounds alright

  • What album is this on ?

  • Obviously Dr Hook thought differently.

  • @inneedoftherapie and very successful here in Aus it was

  • I like it and I'm Australian

  • This is the best version ever. :-)

The origianlly sung or told by Mick Jagger, is not that good.

Dr.Hook recorded this as a single only released in Australia (of course) in 1981, with "Before the tears" as the flipside.

All they made on this single was donated to charity /children hosita in Australia - It sold to very well.

P.S Its not released on any origianally LP- Album, but on some collections CD`s ypu will find it.

  • Mick Jagger is not the originator of this poem, you ignorant gimp.

  • I know that

    - but his recorded version was released before Dr.Hooks version,

    you ignorant lunatic LOL

  • @Darlington30 Everyone has their own way of doing things(even you) just enjoy the song for what it is my friend

  • i am wild but i'm not a colonial neither am i a boy any more

  • Ho visto il film The quiet man decine di volte e questo motivo mi è rimasto nel cuore, ma non sapevo che fosse un canto tradizionale australiano. E' bellissimo

  • Yes it is indeed an Australian folk song as it is also a part of Australian history as is Ned Kelly.Sung with conviction, would bring jeers from any Assie.

    Truely in hook style.

    Thankyou for posting.

  • Oh yes Sigurd I renember it very well, after looking for that song for ten years was it great to finelly hear it thrue your phone great moment for us HOOKERS. Ten year after I finelly get hold on Fried Face after searching for it for nearly 30 years. Do you renember when we first heard those great songs at your home.

    CHEERS PER

  • I First got hold on this song, as late as 1991. I then had search for the single for many years.

But it was only released in Australia as a charity. Later when i got a penpal from Australia, a girl who was nice and visit a "second hand" shop and bought the single for me and shipped it away to Norway. I Then played it on my record player, phoned up Per and told him : " Per, listen to this" and hold my phone close to the speaker.

    Do you remember , Per?

    Nice song.

  • Thanks, inneedofthrepie. Only heard this song by M Jagger and now Dr H's version, which I enjoy a lot. Did not know they ever did this song. Still don't know: Is this an Irish or an Australian folk song?

  • It's Irish.

  • to be quite honest it was written by the irish settlers who were in Australia. It is known as Aistralian. A lot of people don't know that a large quantity of Irish convicts and then untill 1854 there were Irish prisoners sent to Australia.

  • opps i Meant it is as an Australian song. Can't spell well at 2:35am

  • It is Irish-Australian, the Irish ripped it off.

  • Absolutely FABULOUS!!!!!!!

  • I love it, had the album when I was about 5 yrs old and have been looking for this for a while. Cheers in need.
