more and more exercise is needed each day to achieve the same buzz.
It's demeaning to allude to a lack of effort or "not trying hard enough" to people with depressive illness. There are millions of carers and families who have daily experience of living with someone with these REAL physiological conditions.
I guess all those who committed suicide just needed a brisk walk and a vitamin injections.
@telemetry9 quick check of your profile shows me you are a troll of the "copy and paste" variety - Im sorry the idea of taking responsibility for your own state and educating yourself in non chemical means of dealing with depression offends you, but its only to easy to imagine exactly WHY. How dare you presume to speak for all suicides? Flipping nit wit... "Blanket accusations of other peoples ignorance without prior knowledge = Troll" and consider: "Negative beliefs = negative realities".
@streetfightsecrets haha makes sense doesn't it? Life's draining enough without trying to explain calculus to a monkey - or actually snakes and ladders to a monkey hahahaha - tiddly winks hahaha
Brilliant advice! I went to the doctors about my depression and was immediately given a course of prozac and was told I wasn't ill enough for counselling (20 years of NI payments for what?!?!). Luckily for me I was able to get some counselling at work (University Counselling service) and it made a massive difference to my life. I agree with all the points you make, it's cool to see a big guy like yourself talking openly about depression. That's a pretty manly thing to do in my opinion. Peace.
I find it so hard to get a good nights sleep so can see where you're coming from, find it hard to exercise due to a condition, but think it's more the fear of passing out if I over exert. And not worked for nearly two years and absolutely hate it! But I'm gonna start exercising now, start with the basics. Thank you for posting!

very informational video. but, i have only one suggestion: as i was surfing the web, and only listening, i had the impression that i was getting bored, and not wanting to pay attention anymore. don`t get me wrong, i like digest everything you`re saying, but try to talk slower, i also had the impression that i was running out of air as you talked :) sorry if i offended you in anyway and sorry for my english :)
I suffer from Depression and yeah it really is chemical, I can get depressed with no real reason. But I find a distraction is my best method, probably why I do martial arts, it's a goal I enjoy. But physical fittness, I know is good, but there is no way to motivate yourself into it, well I have trouble and know the benifits of the end result, just can never feel for it.
@bushidolovecock sports, that's the only way to get the physical fitness without having to get motivated. i played volleyball on the beach hours a day on vacation, it was fun and a great workout. ultimate frisbee is another great one, since there's a lot of running. i always feel great after a lot of physical activity :)
Yeah oddly enough your right, it can give you a some buzz to play around in a sport. Just you need another person usually. Well actually I've ran around with a dog or too, so err maybe not :)
Hello Richie,I used to 'speak' on one of your old forums about 'what do you think of Krav Maga'?I have always valued your opionion, and you opened my eyes on that particular subject.
I know you also became a master practitioner in NLP....
Well, I am doing a course in Febuary 2010,to become a practioner under the schooling of Tad James (ABNLP).
I would be grateful for your comments on this subject, what do you honestly think of it?Genuine request here!!
...well mate... "its a lot like martial arts" so here goes:
NLP as a system - its ok - got some good stuff in there but the good stuff can also be found elsewhere and a whole loads of garbage in there too. NLP under RB as a political org or business? Steer well clear.
Its a lot like martial arts as I say: a lot comes down to the instructor. I dont know Tad James, but Im sure he will bring his own flavour to it.
Excellent video. As a long time student of Tai Chi Chuan, having also been in and out of the mental health system for over 30years, I can attest to your ideas and concepts. I particularlarly endorse your suggestion of teaching these and other techniques in schools. Skills such as practised mindfulness, combined with martial arts skills and right thought, would see a reduction in bullying and raise self esteem and compassion (service/contribution). Many thanks for your contribution. Danny
"Skills such as practised mindfulness, combined with martial arts skills and right thought, would see a reduction in bullying and raise self esteem and compassion"
I actually used to teach these concepts in schools for a couple of years, under the guise of "study skills" and "motivation" seminars, the kids absolutely loved it. Some teachers were deliriously happy, some were hysterical with rage at what I was teaching.
Thanks for replying. It just seems commonsensical to me that these fundamental tools should be taught in schools. My step daughter goes to a Montessori primary, and from an early age they teach peer mediation skills amongst many other life skills approaches. I should also say that learning to fight both mentally and physically curiously reduces the need to fight...its when we don't have the tools or mechanisms that our powerlessness may give way to desperate measures. Commendable work Richard.
Well done for raising these issues. In occupational therapy we use the term 'productivity' to encompass all aspects of 'making a contribution' which I agree is very important.
I've had other minro psych issues in the past, but they were all immediately environmental
as a psychologist you usually fall into one of two camps: believing psychological issues are genetic (nature) or believing they are environmental (nurture)
I am very definitely in the latter camp. If we are seeing a huge spike in cases of depression in the UK (all evidence suggests we are) its because culture has developed to support that phenomenon.
Strictly speaking I dont believe such a thing as "depression" exists as it is described and talked about - all psychiatric "illnesses" are social constructs, their creation is voted on by a symposium of psychiatrists.
"Depression" is a social construct, its not reality its just a model of reality.
But human beings are REALLY suffering as a result of mental health issues.
The map is not the territory.
Like a Hopi Indian I actually canNOT be "depressed",it isnt part of my reality.
im thinking of starting reading because i want to become a better person and want to read something that is life changing which opens up my views on aspects of life and how approach matters that i come across, do you have any recommendation on any good books to read? mainly factual books/ biographies - i dont like fictional books because id rather watch a film.
I just got a sleep study done and I had sleep apnea. They gave me a nutty mask to aid in breathing and some advice. Wow. 9 restorative hours of sleep is a thousand times better than 5 or 4 hours of crappy of and on sleep. Endurance in the gym is improved beyond belief.
No, it's the Politically correct version of merry christmas, and it pisses me off that you arent able to say merry christmas without being "correct". yeah, i had a long weekend
no one in general or on this video, just ranting. PCness is going to be the downfall of the west. I mean you live in the UK, you must agree. They take away every weapon, soon using your hands is gonna be illegal.
Please realize people, those of you who are taking antidepressants long termly, they are raising levels of serotonin and at the same time it is suppressing the dopamine circuit, and eventually it will kill your attachment. Please understand this, and do what you can to try to stay away from these. Please.
I was reading something a while ago which said that Depression is actually an adaptation of the Human body to break down problems, and that is why depressed people have a LIST of things they are depressed about.

I wouldn't have even answered that.
I have serious depression - formerly suicidal intentions - self harming history and OCD - along with probably bi polar and a wicked sense of humour -
I know that inactivity makes it worse - therefore exercise makes it better - Frank Bruno says the same, "a massage for the mind" -
Keep up the good work.
