The thing about this is that the water to air ratio isn't balanced in the glass when you put it upside down on the table, so as soon as you try to lift it up you will be letting the air  from the outside into the cup and it will try to move to the top, thus pushing the water down and out. Plus water being a thin liquid it wants to take up as much surface area as possible first before it starts taking up more vertical space. All these things together show rationally that this trick can't be done.

The trick is fake. In order to remove the cup from the water air first has to get to the top ( Witch is the bottom of the cup ) which would cause a vacuum effect and push the water down.

Here how it is how I would do it....

Film the glass empty remove the glass from the table keeping the table in frame....

Track the footage with a 3d tracker (( Synth Eyes all the way!! ))

Use 3ds max with Real flow and make a suspended model of water to fit the cup....

Export to After Effects and color correct....

That is how the guy did it along those lines...

It didn't work because you didn't dry off the table. The floating water trick works because of water's surface tension. If there's water all over the table, the water that could potentially "float" is going to be pulled down by the water already on the table. After you get the card out from under the cup, wipe up all the water around it. That should make it much easier to get the water to "float."
