The only exceptions to Volvo's rule are the two cars that have the "8" in the second digit (480 and 780); I don't think either of those cars had V8s.

Volvo's old numbering system used to be:
1st digit - series number
2nd digit - cylinders of the engine
3rd digit -number of doors

old SAABs and Ford Taunus had a V4 engine, also ZAZ cars had a V4 engine
