  • School is for fools, don't waist your money. You will be surprised how many successful people are drop out.

  • @hollapro - I agree. Even Steve Jobs was a dropout and look at what he created!

  • You have been prepared to become a starving 'arteest.' If your art is exceptional, other people will make money off it after you're dead. What's in it for you? Not much money.

  • @alfekal - lol, which is precisely why I became a landlord instead. Much more money to be made in it!

  • hey i wana be your friend hopefully

  • No Offense but an Art Degree? that kinda says it all

  • @karan6 - not just an Art degree, but a FINE art degree of all things. Looking back I should've spent the $56,000 on a rental property before the prices in Canada exploded back in 2007.

  • Yes college is garbage. Profscam is a really good book that proves it to be true.

  • @dutytocareforothers - It's been 2 years since I was last in college and I didn't even use anything I've 'learned' - other than finding out the residence dorms are where the money is made!!

  • If you borrow the money you have to factor in the compounded interest on the debt which raises it even more.

  • No kidding. The benefits of post-secondary education are decreasing and the cost of going through it are increasing. It's nuts!

  • Are you GAY??? That's it. WTF is with all these good looking gay guys? What a waste of good DNA. Do you realize how many ugly people there are in this world? Go fuck a hot chick ya selfish bastad.

  • Lol, that's for the compliment. I liked to look good for the camera back then :P

  • I understand what you mean about how the classes you take aren't that helpful for skills in real life. I'm not sure how film, logic, religious studies, philosophy or anthropology will help me with employment or job skills. For job skills, I am thinking of switching to siast because at least there may be some hope of learning some skills for getting a job. How is university going for you now or are you finished?

  • I'm done with university... at least for now. I've got a pretty stable job here in the city and I guess if I get laid off or fired I'll get that one last class :P

  • No not unless it's what you mentioned.

  • baaaaaahahaha it looks like inside out intestines.

  • k after actually watching the entire blog you have camera skills so you should apply to work for MTVcanada or Much Music... even though Much is pretty dead to me since they got the new (tragic) VJs.

Anddd... university is a growing experience. at the end of the day you have that piece of paper that said you did it... and that self reassurance will make you feel good one day. and you wont be one of those moms that goes back to college after her kids leave home... they depress me.

  • Really? Well actually yeah, the middle-aged female students at universities are kinda strange.

One thing (perhaps) about university that is an asset is that people that come out of it are *much* more confident than people that went to work straight out of high-school. No idea why, but that's my theory.

And thanks for the picture quality praise :) I actually just got accepted to ANOTHER job (and I'm totally taking it)! But you'll have to wait until my next blog to find out what it is :P

  • It does seem kinda useless to go to school for something like the arts or English, but a lot of places just want you to have some degree. I guess it shows that you put forth the effort to complete 2 or 4 years worth of *something* in order to get a degree.

My major is Grapic design, but part of the requirements are to take a business class, and a class in Microsoft Office, along with the English, math and of course the artsy/design classes!

  • Oh wow, so they do require some added practical learning in that field. Good thing too.

  • ummm thats not the point!!

the point is even tho u think University is garbage that COMPANIES dont.

so unless u want to work in a factory ur whole life making 35k a year...

i rather go to University and make 80k...

  • I went to university for my Fine Art Degree and I make 21K right now as a CSR. I could've made that same amount for the past 5 years and not have spent $56,000+ for my 'schooling'.

Like I said, it makes sense to go to university to be an Engineer, Lawyer, Doctor or something like that, but not for Fine Art, English, Women's Studies, etc.

  • yes and i blame universities for have stupid courses like Womens studies..

like seriously wtf can u do with that?

    what POSSIBLE job... LOL

I get what ur saying, and some courses shouldnt even be offered...

  • He hehe, I guess you could become a women's studies *professor* and just add more fuel to the fire.

Sort of like I could be an art teacher and create fuel more students to waste money and live like a starving artist :P

  • Sheesh I have a friend that makes 88,000 a year because his mom's friend gave him a job at 19yo managing her small business. Same thing with my brother's bf. He was given a district manager's job by his "fag hag". Makes 100,000.00 US yearly and dropped out of school after a year for this.

My art major bf works at Wal Mart lol! (only local place hiring-scary!) Often not what you know but whom!

  • Isn't that so ridiculous? Obviously university is overrated. The rich have rich children, and the poor have poor children. A vicious cycle that has very little to do with education and more to do if daddy or mommy has money :(

  • yes he may have been lucky...

but what happens when he loses that job? say when hes hmmm 45??

hows he going to find ANOTHER job at that age without a degree???

u cant assume u will work there ur whole life!

  • I'm in school now, and it is expensive, but not nearly expensive as it would be if I were an art major (^_^) So, was it worth it?

  • Mmm... maybe ask me in a couple years? Right now I'd say it's a big fat NO. I mean $121K would buy a nice house (or a down-payment for a VERY nice one).

Where did you go to school?

  • I'm going to school at California State University of Sacramento. It's a pretty nice school overall. As long as we're still in touch then, I think I WILL ask you in a couple years (^_^)

  • Lol, okay :)

How much does it cost to go to that university (tuition, books, fees, etc.)?

  • Because I'm a resident of California, I'm not required to pay tuition, just fees. The fee's are about $2800 I believe and textbooks usually total up to $400-$500...more or less depending on the classes. It's pretty nice...but my first semester I wasn't a resident of California. I had to pay $331 per unit for 12 units, plus the fees, plus textbooks...that was a lot.

  • Wow! That's actually a pretty darn good deal as a California resident :)

  • It sure is. Well, I'll catch up with you tomorrow. I should be getting to sleep, lol. Have a great night! (^_^)

  • ok number one.. nice hair.. number two.. have u started doing your eyebrows?! they look good haha.. good points though.. seriously .. even in architecture.. they don't teach you about job placement.. i think it should be built in .. yeesk haha i guess for us at least they have coop and ppl get hired easily for architecture.. but ya i can see what your saying.. you really really are out alot of money

  • At least with an architecture degree, it lines you up with a career. How much money did you spend (including rent) at Carleton in Ottawa? I bet it's a whack-load too. But you'll be making big bucks to compensate in no time :)

And the eyebrows. Nothing really special done to them. I just got rid of the unibrow and tamed their natural bushiness at home. I think mostly the lighting does tricks on ya! :P

  • haha oh i see! well i think i spent in total about 15000 a year .. so about 60000 dollars ..holy crap haha alot :P

  • You make some good points. It really depends on what field you go into about the actual worth of college, but regardless very few degrees offer much practical experience for the real world.

Meanwhile, I've noticed a horrible trend in the classified ads where the importance of having experience has been blown way out of proportion. I noticed an ad the other day for lawn maintenance that required 5 yrs previous experience & another as a house painter that wanted 7 yrs. That's just outrageous.

  • Holy crap! I guess when there's more workers than work, people get really picky (and lazy in that they don't want to train people).

The job market for our generation is pretty depressing. It's going to bite the employers in the butt though in the long run.

  • yeah I so agree with you on university. Luckily most of my tuition was paid in scholarships but my scholarships were contingent that I majored in classical languages. So I spent 4 years studying languages that no one speaks, so it is whatever. But the craziest thing is what you said about universities not teaching you anything about the workplace, not how to get a job, not how to make what you are learning meaningful outside of academia, thats a disservice. Enjoyed the video man

  • Thanks for sharing your views. Wow, you studied languages that aren't even being used today? :S yikes! What kind of work are you doing now?

To be honest, if I didn't have my 4 years of scholarships, I probably would've dropped out of university sooner. I just felt obligated to use that money for my education. I also had this irrational fear about being "the only guy in the family who didn't go to university".

Just food for thought for those out there that are going through the same thing.

  • I know exactly what you are talking about. I finished up college last year. The "was college worth the money" thought has gone through my mind more then once.

Was college worth it? Well like you said I will have to make up a lot of money to break-even.

  • Definitely. And it's even doubly worse in the USA where college graduates are faced with an awful job market while already in debt. I'm sure it's going to spread to Canada in the next several months too :(

  • Hey! I just came across your channel and your vlogs are great.

Are you still looking into purchasing real estate? If so, you check out Newfoundland properties. They're relatively cheap as far as I know. Mind you, I haven't looked at a real estate guide in quite some time, so I could be wrong. Haha.

At my university (Memorial University of Newfoundland Labrador), tuition is the cheapest in the country: $1,350 per semester depending on whether or not you live in residence. Pretty cheap, eh?

  • Wow, that is very inexpensive!

I met a woman from Newfoundland that lived in my residence at the U of M and she told me it was bizarre to here that people say "I'm going to the lake" as if it was a treat. Apparently oceanfront property is affordable and commonplace in Newfoundland! :O

What are you taking at your university?

  • PART 1:

Hahaha. Oceanfront property is indeed fairly common here in Newfoundland because of the fact that a lot of people made a living by fishing years ago. You won't find many extravagant homes in rural communities, so those houses aren't as expensive; however, in the places that surround the capital city, large homes are being built constantly. It's a hot commodity and because of that, the land to build houses on is getting really expensive.

  • PART 2:

I just finished my first year, so I'm not doing anything specific just yet. I hope to get into the business faculty for marketing come September, so I've been doing prerequisites. I guess you could say that I thrive on creativity much like yourself being an artist, which is why I really want to get into advertising. Later down the road, though, I hope to pursue other things, but I won't get into those details. I would only bore you. :P

  • Love the new pad:D all you need now is a leopard skin sofa and your sorted....

Guess you'll need to put that on hold with all your bills... ;(

  • Lol, I DO have a zebra-like blanket back in my dorm-room ;) but I'm not sure if it would work well with my "ugly random 1960s things in my basement" motif I'm obviously going for :P

I'm fortunate that all $56K is paid for in full (scholarships, summer jobs, and of course parents). However, it's scary that that's the amount I've spent for a silly FA degree.

That could've been a nice down payment for a revenue property! Oh well. I hope that my experience better informs future university goers.

  • well i think the main thing is if you're getting a degree towards a low-paying career, don't get all kinds of student loans. The debt will crush you. Even if you're going for a high paying career it's still better to avoid the debt, maybe pay as you go... in my case i worked, then joined the military, it took me 8 yrs to finish.

  • Exactly. I feel bad for all those American students in my age group that spent all this money to enhance their education and now they're facing this awful American job market.

Now they simply work 3 jobs because they NEED the job, and eventually feel hopeless. Not a good start to the 'Y generation'.

Fortunately for you, indicating military training on your resume is impressive ;)

  • it just seems that student loans are the "easy" thing to do, but they are like any product in this economy, and are oversold as to the nature of the true cost to a person. People make money on it just like any product, and it is "sold" to young people.

  • Student loans seem like they can very very daunting. I know someone that has to pay $700/month in student loans for the next 12 years :O.

Keep in mind that (from my experience) after several years of school, a person feels real drained in the first place and is susceptible to making desperate choices. Low-paying employers love to hire and take advantage of people thousands of dollars in debt.

  • "we got sexi lights" but you forgot to say a Sexi man to heheh.

  • Oh... I can be pretty bashful to change :o)

  • General comments:

    1. you raised very legitimate questions about the things to consider before deciding to spend years of your life and lots of money to go to college

    2. If you don't go to college for a professional education (medicine, engineering, business, sciences, etc) then maybe work and go to college part-time if you're into fine arts.

Very specific comment: You are one very sexy guy!

  • Thanks for your thoughts! I agree. I can only imagine if I had a whack-load of student loans all based on a FA degree :S

I just find it so silly that our North American culture pretty much expects everyone to go to university for SOMETHING, or else we're in for a dead-end job.

That is simply not true and I want to send that message out to recent high school graduates that university is not the be-all-end-all. Believe me, I went through it! :)

  • Amazing Blog! Love it! Jesse ^_^

  • I take it that we have a new blog location winner?

I hope that my sister doesn't dismantle my hard work... not that it would stop me from re-creating it ;)

  • LMAO! It's not funny the ammount of money spent but it kinda is! I plan on goin back to college and then Uni this September but I calculate that it aint gonna cost anythin REMOTELY as much as that! lol, Maybe a few thousand, not a hundred!

    Paris x

Uni is definately the better choice...i tried the 9 - 5 thing for three years and it was the most miserable time of my life!

p.s. you are lookin hansum in this vid sah!

  • Ha ha! Thanks, I thought it was time for a haircut ;)

I hear that post-secondary education in most of Europe is very inexpensive compared to Canada. It's even crazier in the United States :(

The weird thing is though, even with a university degree we're going to be doing a 9-5 job anyways. Unless you've discovered something I haven't... have you found the fountain of youth somehow? :O

What was crummy about your three years in the workforce? What did you do?

  • I worked in a call center and that is the crummiest of crummy!

Well, I'm going to study A level dance as I already have my ND, so I can just jump straight back into it! When I say 9-5 i mean like office/boring/dire work! I have full respect for people who do that but its not for me!

    Paris

    x

  • Oh yes. The dreaded call centre. There's actually a big one in my city where it seems almost EVERY gay man I know has worked there! From what I hear, they can be pretty spiritually degrading.

Sorry for being a little bit of a noob, but when you said ND, you meant National Diploma, right? I had to look it up on Wikipedia *embarrassed*

  • lol, s'okay, yeah i got ND in dance so im gonna go straight to A level now so i can go to a proper dance school after my college course!

Am all excited about life again!

    Paris x

  • 3

They will not be able to resist the urge and will job you offering you even more than you expected just to entice another crab into the barrel with the great hunk of meat. Ah but you are not that crab you have been tainted by the web spun by the Coon Ass in Louisiana a life where you wake each day and say do I want to do what I am doing FUCK yeh I created this life just the way I want it. I'm Debt free Party on. Right here right now is exactly where I want to be. And you take the job.lol

  • I was offered a fully paid tuition to the U Of R in Business admin.. but i declined

  • Wow, how did you score an opportunity like that?

Was there some sort of catch to the deal? I got all muddled up with the bureaucratic issues of both institutions and eventually felt like I was being cheated out of my time and money.

I bet a business degree would be much more useful than something like a Fine Art, History, Music, or even a Science degree.

  • My license is class A cdl with endorsements TPX triples doubles, passenger, hazardous materials/tank. Post Katrina they needed people fast even if you had your back broken in a tornado and are fresh out of college and hadn't driven big trucks in years. But I was in the right place right time. Went to work in the most f**ed place I have ever seen in my life they still hadn't collected all the bodies. I saw places where the lawn was scraped off too no grass no nothing.

  • That sounds so sad and unreal. It still shocks me that well over 1800 people died from Katrina even after the mass evacuations of the relatively predictable disaster.

  • I had to send you the #2 comment in an e mail the new changes made to this site will not allow you to commm if it looks like spam.

  • You will be fine because you are going to be humble and see things the others have to miss because you are the fresh new perspective exactly what the world is looking for. Go to the library check out an Anthony robins book he has tapes too but they take a while.

History is what Condoleezza Rice went in for she is an expert in Russian political science.

I am going to hire the person that will get along with my crew and make me look good by earning.

  • I had to work within the co-op system for like 10 years or something, I don't remember.. but doing clerical work.. something I have no interest in

  • Ah yes. That my friend is what is called a catch :P

  • One day you will say money is just a way of keeping score. Get in the right place land the whale advertiser because of your trained eye you will never look back. I have an associates degree in electronics haven't fixed fuck! but It gave me something to place on an application (Bullshit) and first job after graduating was 150K a year. Nothing to do with my field but I aint arguing with them reap in the harvest so you can build in the spare time.

  • Holy moly, what career tracks pay $150K a year right out of school?!

I've noticed that a lot of people are educated in one field and are completely doing something else. A perfect example is the crazy balloon pilot I was with last year; he has a degree in biology for crying out loud! :)
