I get cold sores every year in the winter, usually on average about 3 a year. Once when I was 11 I had five, count them five cold sores at once. It looked like a lip colagen injection gone way way wrong. I went to the doctor who was a foreigner from india or something and he asks me "Do you do a lot of kissing?' I'm like uhh no I'm 11.

hey dr. whatever your name is... lets fix something up here. looks like you forgot something here to mention that 'herpes' is a STD but coldsore is not STD therefore you cant call it 'Herpes' cuz there is a different between them. cold sore is usally cuz by stress and in some cases cuz by the high temp of your body that is not cuz by any viruse.for example if you accidentaly drop some HOT water on your skin the skin diffense itselfs by creats water bubble that comes of the inner layer of skin

I get cold sores/type 1 herpes. It's really no big deal, it's not life threatening it's just annoying and ugly looking. Mine rarely burns or stings, and I'm cold sore free for months before I break out again. The only real problem with herpes simplex 1 is the social stigma being placed on it. People see somebody with a cold sore and look at the person like they got AIDs. WTF?! Come on people, cold sores aint that serious.

Hey guys i have been a fellow cold sore sufferer for my whole life. I pretty much know every worthwhile treament out there. A quick tip for you, avoid swelling of the sore at all costs. This will prolong the outbreak for atleast a few days and make the sore look alot worse. To prevent swelling i suggest taking ibuprofen(advil) aswell as putting ice on the sore for 20 mins. @shenillap there is a difference. the cold sores you have on your mouth is usually the virus you catch when you get chicken pox as a child then goes dormant within nerves behind your cheek bone. sometimes it stays dormant for the rest of their lives or one day you could have a random outbreak. but the other type is genital herpes which is caught by sexual contact. and you can catch the type 2 on your mouth as well so the difference between location really doesnt matter unless you get tested. :P

It's from the same family as the Chickenpox, so it stays with you all your life and it's very easy to get it. Good chance of getting it from family members more than other people. The one thing that is worrying is that eye contact with the disease can lead to blindness.

@princessexpistol Heres a tip for your next outbreak. For the first 12 hours, ice the cold sore with an ice cube for about 5 mins. This will reduce the swelling. Next, with a Q-tip, apply nail polish remover on the cold sore. Your cold sore will heal within 5-6 days and WON'T be as noticeable.

This is more true than probably anyone realizes. as a med student we learned that about 50% of middle age adults are positive for HSV-1. Only a certain percentage of those will have outbreaks. As one ages, the risk of having been transmitted the virus obviously increases.. some studies show that up to 80-90% of elderly people are positive for HSV-1. This scenario is closer to "everyone gets it, just a matter of when" rather than "ew you have herpes?"

Valtrex is awesome. I take it at the first signs of an outbreak, and then once a day for the following two days. Sometimes more if it's a serious one. Mine are awful, my whole lip swells up and the blisters are massive. I have one right now, because I only had one Valtrex when the outbreak started.
