With Gormless Gideon Osborne the Bilderberg Baldric we haven't got a cat in hell's chance. He sings the Neocon Hymn. He gave the crossrail contract to Siemens on a plate instead of Bombadier. Means the trains will be built in Krefeld, Deutschland instead of Derby. Better for the Taxpayer. Yeah paying for dole with less tax coming in. El Camarón & Gideon are Little Dicks,
amazing at one time the British led the world innovation and tech and now? we are crap...
hell when this car came out the German firm BMW where going down the drain and even M-Benz where in a bit of trouble... now? BMC(or British Leyland/Austin Rover/Rover) are history..makes you want to spit!
Undersealing (rustproofing) consisted of brushing black bitumen on the underside. This was usually an extra which had to be paid for. There was no wax injection or galvanised steel used then so most cars rusted quickly in the sixties. If you got five years out of a car then without serious rust and holes you had done well.
Yes but considering what a bargain the original Mini was, you could pay to have it fully rust proofed every year and still be quids in. Or just buy a new one every 5 years as they didn't cost the earth, unlike the hideous blob BMW now inflicts on us.
@taffy1967 ... A representative British-made engine should be a very reliable high-efficiency Diesel that can run on pure vegetable oil. Currently what British company makes one?

Here in Australia we had the "Morris 850" version rather than the "Austin Se7en" version of the original Mini.
The Austin version had a grille which gave it a family resemblence to the larger Austin models of the era.
Very interesting old footage, thanks for sharing!

in addition to that, cars nowadays are computer designed and have all potential rust traps and cavities designed out of them...

Maybe so, but they were still a damned sight more fun to drive than the boring euro bland boxes that litter the roads today.

The current BMW Mini has a diesel version planned.
Leyland actually developed a diesel engine based on the BMC A Series engine.
It was used in the Leyland Mini tractor, but never used in cars.
