But based on what I've read, my theory is this. The elderly heavily depend on their families for financial and physical support. This addition of expense may hinder couples from being able to afford a child. Then they become too old themselves to have children. By 2020 Japan will be 25% elderly. This is what the trend show

What "other things?" Why do you think they keep trying to make the robots look so "human?" Trust me, they believe that in a few decades, there won't be enough young people to take care of their elderly, since they have high respects for the old. So they are building additional help that can be mobile, productive, and something we can be more comfortable living with in our, or rather, their homes.
