It works pretty darn good, actually. You just have to wet/dampen it first. I haven't had to clean up soda spills from under a carpet, but I have cleaned up some pretty messy stuff with it. Wet it or pour a little club soda over a stain and press the shamwow against it. Works better than a sponge or towel. And it does hold a hell of a lot of water. Don't know about 12 times its weight, but it is a boatload.

if you look at 0:43 when he put the drenched carpet piece down you can see some water from the puddle he made. the next shot the carpet is there but the table looks dry (there is no water seen at all). this means that they probably cleaned up the mess, and partly dried the carpet piece so it looks like the towel absorbed everything and the table gets completely dry too.
