hammer-ons are what is being used in the tehnique of tapping.

usually hammer-ons are with one hand.

Hammering, tapping, touching = LEGATO DUMBASS

I use all 8 fingers at once with a combination of touch technique, tapping technique and hammering with both hands but really it's all just legato as far as guitar is concerned. As set in history and stone as many terms are, those defining guitar techniques are quite loose. In the guitar world, legato means no picking the strings at typically any school but, in the traditional definition it means "tied together" AKA smooth and seamless note changes.

Traditional definition means smooth, with out break or seamless. With guitar, it simply means no picking which causes breaks in the note transitions. When the guitar is touch sensitive enough to play it one handed, you get the legato sound. When you get good enough, you can use both hands on the neck and get 8 finger legato such as 8 finger tapped arpeggios which are extremely smooth and seamless and the truest form of legato on guitar.
