oh GOD!! God would say Oh MY F>>>>!!!!! Max has the salsa tropical thing, Buddy so smooth like Concorde against the winds. This Music sound like "sega" in Mauritius. Good post.
OK... Ol schooler here. Yep! Max gots the grooove! all over the damn place! BUT Buddy is clean sweet! These gentlement where masters at their craft. And has transcended down in various guises i.e. funk, jazz ,rock, punk rock, metal etc... I use to listen to this vynl as a kid, Then one day while I was listening to it anew it hit me! U Ol or new schoolers might remember hearing THIS(Max's solo) track played during battle scenes in the original Star Trek with Jimmy boy!
both are legends....i hate drummer comparisons....the best drummers play from the inside....what they feel....no man is made the same...we all have our own way.
Max Roach was a lot more musical and listenable than Buddy. Buddy had the chops, but at the end of the day, the last thing i hear is Max Roaches beautiful melodies.
Close call, but Buddy wasn't at his artistic best here. He really improved over time in that regard (as Buddy himself admits in interviews). Check out Buddy's version of "If I Were A Bell" on youtube -- some of the best drum artistry of all time. Better than anything I've heard from Max, or anybody else, for that matter.
... an inadvertent typo; Krupa was indeed born in 1909. However, the other (equally unimportant) italicized birth dates of BR/Roach are entirely accurate. Even so, their respective birth dates are way besides the POINT, which is (in case you missed it): Comparing Rich to Roach is like apples to oranges since BR was heavily influenced by Gene Krupa, etc., etc... (see below)Source: "Traps: The Wonder Drummer - The Life of Buddy Rich" by Mel Torme.
It isn't really possible to outplay Buddy on a technical level, but musicality is another factor. Tony Williams was possibly the most musical player ever, and certainly no slouch technically, but if it came down to Buddy vs Tony, I would go with Tony, even if Buddy could pull off a slightly faster paradiddle.
Comparing Rich to Roach is a bit like apples to oranges. BR (born 1917) was heavily influenced by Gene Krupa (born 1924) who was considered to be best of his era for his highly energetic, flashy & flamboyant style. Max Roach (born 1924) didn't care much about being flashy, but instead relished in being the pioneer of bee-bop/improv genre, was influenced by Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis.
I remember when I bought this old mono LP & my drummer friend listening with me saying he was more impressed with Max Roach for his syncopation and innovative ability.
@gronster911 Mainly, to quote some of the comments here it's a case of "speed & technique" vs "musical" style. What made it a bit easier for me to tell the difference is perfect pitch. Max & Buddy's drums are not pitched the same - so I could generally tell which one was playing while the other was waiting.
Listen to the way Max uses space and takes the same rhythmic ideas (like those killer four stroke ruffs around the set), but integrates them at different points of the measure.
Buddy on the other hand shows his amazing technical virtuosity that no drummer could or match. Love the cymbal crashes (played with the kick) at the end of his solo...so much groove in those hits! I also dig the snare accents in his solo matching the pattern on Max's bell.

How cool is it that two great drummers (musicians) would do something like this? Not the kind of thing you see these days.

This is why I like jazz: it's an art and probably the best art of expressionism. Rich is Da Vinci and Roach is Picasso...or Salvador Dalí.
