I have been playing this song ever since Dwight brought it out.
Now i see this old man and his young friend there in the street and how the old man is telling the young one go back to the southern land and get wasy from the streets of LA. I feel something special inside when i sing this and I always hope my friends and fans hear the message too.
@Troyfreid1 fuck you asshole! shut up, put one hand over your mouth and the other over your heart and enjoy the damn music you god damned hipster piece of shit.
@OverYunder for 20 years I tried to understand the actual story behind this song. This has always been one of my favorite Yoakum tunes. Now I understand! Thanks!
@pqwilrj It's about an old Southern man who'd moved to California looking for the American dream. The man, however, found that Cali is lie, and now he's dying from alcoholism as a homeless man in Las Angeles. Dwight, who is playing a fellow Southerner in the song, walks by and sings him off into the next world with the tune of Dixie while the old man enjoins him to get up out of California and go back to Dixie, which is where the old man hopes his soul will find rest.
Like i always say....Dwight stands ALONE at the top of country music.....his voice stands alone and this song prooves it. Hey is that Pete on lead guitar....sounds like him....what a sweet sound.
Best country music singer to this very day. Amen...
I KNOW Pete left Dwight....but I am asking about this song and someone told me that it IS Pete...on Lead guitar....recording from many years ago. Thank you anyway.
All my friends and workmates would laugh if 'blueridgekeith' told them i wasnt Southern. Of course being Appalachian is true too. More Ky boys fought for Dixie than yankeeland. (Thankfully)
While north of the Mason Dixon line, now all of Kentucky is appalachian. While Dwight was born in the appalachian region, Kentucky is considered both northern to the south and southern to the north. It depends on how you take your heritage... I come from Central KY and consider myself southern because there is a big difference between southern living and living north of the Ohio river.
I am from Louisville. The rest of the state thinks Louisville is not really part of the state - like we are from Indiana or something. Many people from the state have moved to Louisville. They still have Ky accents. I grew up in the Highlands section of Louisville - I don't have any KY accent.
That's what makes Louisville so great. We have influences from the Midwest, East and South. Our weather is perfectly fit for all 4 seasons. Any person who moves to Louisville loves it because of the central location, size, arts, etc. Even if the rest of the state (particularly Lexington) hates us, they can go screw themselves. Our city is the tops in the state.
actually the mason dixon line was the border between pennsylvania and maryland, and after the northwest ordinance was extended to the ohio river once kentucky was settled.
Check your geography and history. The Mason-Dixon Line separates Pennsylvania and Maryland. Kentucky is Heaven on Earth. If you come from the Hills, you understand. If you're not, don't even try.
Half my family's from S.E. Kentucky and everything Dwight says about Southeast KY is so true. My Dad and Grandparents are buried there in the backyard of the house my Dad grew up in - in one of the "hollers".
"I am dying to be at a Dwight concert ... I envy them" or something along these lines. I'll let you translate "snif! snif!" for yourself. Checkout babelfish dot altavista dot com.

I saw him sing this live last night in Houston. It was just an incredible show. Outstanding!
His guitar player was Eddie Perez ... what an amazing talent! I first saw him playing with The Mavericks on a DVD recorded in Austin.
