Aretha has sung touch my body of mariah Carey .............. brilliantly for Aretha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also the album The Ballads that Hero contains is Top 10 (Hot debut) in Billboard!!! congratulations Mariah
hahaha okay just like aretha is in delusion that anything that comes out of her mouth is good your in delusion that mariah is medicore because if that was so then why did she get artist of the millenium award, artist of the decade award, 5 grammy's and about 200 more awards to top that or proclaimed best selling female artist of all time as of this year. and why is she second only to the beatles in number 1 hits.. hmm looks like u and ur screaming moocow loose
You are the delusional one. And so she has 5 grammys Aretha has 21 grammy the most grammys win out of any female. Mariah is good but she will never be as respected in music as Aretha .
Aretha can sing anything. And Aretha never screamed. She got her mixed up with Patti. All Mariah can sing is pop. She is medicore in everyother genre.
i like the legends of the past but when aretha tried this shity atempt of hero it just shows that she can only sing one way no diversity in her voice.. but diana i do respect for the road she has paved for many young artist like mariah but vocally she cant compare with mariah... and like you say mariah does show great respect for the legends but the legends show great respect for her so why you hating on mariah ????
There is nothing shitty about this version of Hero. I think Aretha did an amazing job with this song. And how are you going to say Aretha has no diversity in her voice. Aretha can sing anything and has. Aretha is the only singer that can successful sing any genre of music. Unlike Mariah, all her songs sound the same and she has no diversity what so ever. And Ross was the singer that influence Mariah it was Aretha. And Aretha has left a bigger impact on the music industry than anyother singer
Aretha did a big impact coz in her time there's no Mariah,Celine and Whitney...What if these DIVAS debuted together with Aretha???...Do you think Aretha can be a queen of soul or whatever...Just think about how Mariah erode the charts and awards...You cant compare thier times since they are not debuted together...And do you know Randy Jackson???..He just quoted Mariah that she can sing ANYTHING...all are in Mariah's lungs...Of course its a suicide for Aretha to compare her range to Mariah
Of course she still would have been. There was no one like Aretha and there never will be another Aretha. Her voice is comparable. And who cares what Randy saids, he wouldn't know talent if it bit him on the ass. And what he said was a flat out lie. Mariah is a not able to sing any song that she wants. She is not verstaile enough to do that. Her interpretation skill are 3rd rate to say the least. And without the whistle not Aretha n Mc have the range but Ree uses her voice better.
Well Mariah can sing RnB,Hip-hop,Pop,Ballad,Asian song and etc...Talent is talent...Mariah just stated her influences...But just notice the authenticity of her music...She never ever copy her idols...She has her talent greater than Aretha...I only compliment Aretha for maintaining her voice...
Wow though genre are real stretches. Ballads aren't even a genre of music. And Hip-Hop, RnB and Pop aren't that difficult. Can Mariah take a song and make it hers and only hers no. Mariah's so called talent is nowhere near as great as the Queen. That is the bottom line.
Mariah, Celine, and Whitney don't have a thing on Aretha. Without her they wouldn't be who they were. And without Aretha they would know what it means to really sing. Because Aretha influence both Whitney and Mariah.
I am huge fan of Aretha as well...But you cant compare Aretha's gift to Celine,Whitney and Mariah...They are on stardom its because of their talent...Not because of Aretha's presence
@Muzicx44 thats a good statment but what about all the power houses that debuted with Franklin maybe there was no Mariah Celine or Whitney but there was Ella, Dinah, Fontella, Patti, Gladys and so much more those singers back in my day could easily have beat some of those artist and maybe aretha aint got careys range heck she hardly got anyones range but she has more feeking and depth to her seasoned voice but i agree we shouldnt comapre the 2
Yeah I agree those powerhouses were really huge...And I also hailed Aretha for being on top among them...I mean...If Mariah in her prime has beautiful chest-voice,,,Aretha got soul and power...They are both powerhouses vocalists...And they are beginning to be rare...Since the music today is more on digital enhanced sounds
@rollsroycecooley1 What the hell are you talking about. Aretha in her prime has a very expansive range. Her lowest was a G2 and she even belted a D6. Aretha's chest voice is higher than MC.
@TheQueenAretha well i worded the comment wrong i was saying aretha had competetion in her day but still came out on top but when i mentioned her range i was talkin bout modern times she may not have the range she used to but she still more seasoned and perfectioned in her singing i kno bak n the day she was sumthin and still is 2 day when she wanna be
dianna ross isnt know fore her vocals she was just more generally liked by white people didnt you ever watch dream girls hahahah now that just proves people are in denial when it comes to admitting that mariah is number one lol dianna ross really.... this version of hero makes me wanna throw up i think my ears just did
Mariah shows great R-e-s-p-e-c-t for the Queen and Devine Diana and you disgrace your idol by trashing these goddesses of song. Ross has one of the most mellifluos voices ever to grace the planet. If you are unable to hear her soulful, sweet, clear flute I feel sad for you. It would be like not being able to smell Chanel #5, see the Mona Lisa or taste an orange. It's a tragic handicap you must bear. Sorry.
An on Aretha... as Ms Carey proclaimed to many, many millions: "ALL HAIL THE QUEEN".
no, she really actually did it in concert, im very serious. But it was just for fun, she said "if you throw me on the floor, we gonna have some problems"
yeah but....it's quite similar to Aretha's composition from her 2nd Arsita LP, YOUR THE KIND OF MAN. AND it was written after Wind Beneath My Wings as song by Judy Collins and Galdys Knight AND LATER by Bette Midler.
People are just respecting aretha due to her age and not more in her gots in music....while mariah in just not more than a 2 decades did able to produce 18 hit singles and place 1st as a solo artist and 2nd in over all rank ....people really can say..
It's clear you don't know anything about singing. It's not about sales, range and blablah. EVERYONE from Patti to Streisand have all said time and time again that when it comes to singing, Aretha is in a class entirely by herself. Period. BTW, you might not want Mariah to hear saying what you just said here coz I guarantee you that she'll be the first to bitch slap you into another century!
Yeah but minnie ripperton can't sing like mariah. And I dont mean the whistle. I mean, in her real singing voice. Her voice is nowhere near mariah's height
I'll give you that. But being more powerful does not make you a singer. That's what some fools on here don't seem to understand. For example, Diana Ross is a superior singer to Mariah any day. It's about the phrasing and emotional register a singer can attain in performing a song. The rest is just pointless. No one has "the VOICE" as the idiot above says coz not everyone in history (including the future) has yet been heard. Just enjoy the music folks. Stop all this nonsense comparisons!!!
Ross is way under-rated. Her considerable midrange is VERY clear, powerful, fluid and resonant. She has more VERY well know hits around the world than any other woman, period.
Kids and great grandparents all over the world known Baby Love etc.
That said, Mariah is also a treasure to the music world also, without a doubt.
Mariah always comes up on top because of technical background and training. Her mom was an opera singer so naturally, she has the better trained voice. She can do more with her voice. Aretha is alright. But she don't come close to mariah's vocal ability.
and, maraih was inspired by Minnie Riperton, i read in the wikipedia that when mariah was still very young, she tries to imitate Minnie's whistle notes..! and mariah's technique was inspired by minnie..!
that's wikipedia! Although minnie had an influence in Mariah realising she had an incredible range (and indeed much wider than Minnie's), Mariah always cites ARETHA and Stevie Wonder as he two biggest influences. The reason Mariah did the Divas concert in 98 was basically to duet with Aretha. She didnt really have time for the show, no rehearsals, her voice wasn't rested, etc etc, but she did it to sing with Aretha
Mariah had more range than Aretha, but clearly Aretha is the FAR superior singer. Mariah, as much as I love her voice, often fails to infuse even the most rudimentary emotion and meaning in her performances. She's got the VOICE, but their are far, far better singers, especially live.
Clive Davis said WHITNEY HOUSTON "looks RADIANT and is clearly together." As for rumors that Houston has lost some of her vocal range, Davis said, "She is talking enthusiastically and is articulate. We are going to make a GREAT ALBUM. In my opinion, the BEST SINGERS in the world are ARETHA [Franklin] and WHITNEY. That's not to knock Mariah [Carey]. Mariah is a friend of mine, but I think Mariah would even say those two are the BEST."-WENN September 20, 2006
your speaking evil behind her back would never ever pull her down but prove that you're living in mariah's shadow (even i could judge from your ID), and certainly cannot stand her astonishing success.
that's just one lousy opinion. obviously more people prefer the range, power and clarity in mariah's voice. after all, she is the world's best selling female artist.
ROSIE O'DONNELL: "Now is it OVERWHELMING for you to be singing with the people you grew up idolizing?"
MARIAH CAREY: "Totally! Aretha Franklin...first of all that was just completely INTIMIDATING...and you know...the QUEEN OF SOUL...you don't need to be standing next to the Queen of Soul trying to sing...so you know...I was really NERVOUS..."
Mariah had spoken. She was really INTIMIDATED by Aretha's SOULFUL BELTING. No need to make ALIBIS for her DUMPED PERFORMANCE on Divas Live 98. :)
of course no one can sing it better than mariah it's her song no one can understand what she was feeling when writting it better than her but you seriously need to watch the clip again if you though ARETHA could not sing a mariah song that does not require whistle register
Gosh, you guys are arguing in circles. They're both extremely talented and successful. They're both legends in their own right. The only difference here lies in your own preference. Aretha will always be the undisputed Queen of soul and Mariah too has earned her place in the pantheon of the greats.
They used to have this full version up last year. Would someone please put that back up. Aretha was too vicious for making a poppish song sound so amazing.
ok great aretha won 19 grammy's how many number hits does she have?? 3...mariah 17..records..aretha..???....mariah 170 million worldwide...mariah sets soo many records with her music..aretha is just an old fat whale still hanging on to the success of respect which came out before mariah was born...and its sad that mariah came out nearly 30 years later and destroyed aretha....Thank you i win!!!
Yes, I guess you did win in a crack head sort of way. I've decided not respond to you anymore because you have no historical knowledge. If so, u would know they r about equal in sales, etc. Name calling like a child. Too bad Mariah or Aretha will never know either of us, so you really loose. Your SPECIAL.
They are both natural wonders. Remember when Aretha was peaking women were much less promoted, esp Black women. By the way a number 12 hit by Aretha may have sold more than a number 1 by Mariah. Back then a gold single was 1 millon copies, now it's 250 thousand combined cd, tape & download. Aretha had gold singles that didn't even make the top ten. She paved the way and you know Mariah and everyone else knows it.
but now its time for aretha to step aside. and just because she "paved" the way doesnt make her better or more talented. Think about mariah writes, produces, and over sees every aspect of makin her music not singing someone elses song.
great music is not a competition. Mariah is still inspired by Re. Why should older people stop making music. Aretha writes and produces and PLAYS a mean piano. Mariah resorts to hit producers and co-writers too. Very few of Mariah's songs will be covered because they are mediocre and need Mariah's voice to get them over. Don't forget everybody thought vision of love was Whitney when it came out and that was certainly Tommy Matol's goal.
I just love people who think they have the future all figured out. What do you know which songs will be covered 10-15 years from now? People don't cover Mariah songs for the same reason they don't cover songs of most artists with big voices, because they can't do them justice, no matter what YOU think may be the quality of the songs.
Add to that reason the fact that Mariah is still an active artist and she has only been around for 17 years. Because of music channels and the Internet, everything she has done is still fresh in the minds of the public. Comparing her to someone who has been around since the 50s is just insane. And for the life of me I have yet to understand what is so Whitney-esque about "Vision of Love" as this song does not resemble any of her overblown 80s ballads.
Please, the vast majority of Aretha's standards are either older than Mariah herself, or were released when Mariah was a child. Even though Aretha is still active, there isn't this sense of immediacy like there is with Mariah, since most of what Mariah has done is fresh in the minds of people who are in their late 20s and older.
Its maybe fresher to you because your from MC's era and she still is hanging in there with major lable million $ promotion. But great music, women and wine are nver dated. Recorded music goes back to the 20s. Very recently Clive Davis said Whitney and Re are the 2 greatest living Singers. I saw Re recently and 1/2 the material she hasn't even recorded-that's active.
A standard song is a song with CULTURAL resonance, despite the quality. You ask most people which version of "Without You" they are familiar with, and they will say Mariah's. And I didn't say Aretha was not acttiver. I distinctly remember saying that Aretha's doesn't have the same sense of immediacy as Mariah as her carer is much longer. And askimg Clive Davis who the best singers are is like asking a person from Boston which team the will root for in the World Series.
Point well made re: Clive. Re: Nilsson he's considered one of pop's great Voices and squandered careers. John Lennon produced his lps(a very rare honor) and the Beatles worshipped him. Randy Newman choose him to sing his SongBook.
Still, that is all fine and dandy, but that does not mean that his version of "Without You" is the definitive one. YOU may prefer it, but as far as standards go, it is Mariah's. Do you think Kelly Clarkson was channeling Nilsson when she performed it on Idol?
no Mariah, But Nilsson's was huge and is still played in movies and on oldies staions.
The original usually has the advantage in the difinitive category. And I think on the record she blew one of the hooks with her change (at least she did try a change, unlike many remakes). I saw her sing a live version that was exceptional. Wish she would sing more standards, mix one or 2 in each cd. Re has always song from all genres and made the songs her own and so could MC.
Well that would be true, but Nilsson is not the original singer of "Without You," Badfinger is. He just revamped the song, so that is part of the reason why his version is not regarded as the definitive one. His seems to be kind of lost in the shuffle.
Badfinger didn't have a hit(not even a single) with WY. Re owns Respect over Otis because she had the hit (he did have a R&B charting) Nilsson had the original hit which gets the advantge in the Definitive Version Category. Like boxing and figure skating the champ wins if there's a tie. BTW, the Brits like her covers better also, those are her only # 1 there. She DOES own that P Collins song though. (Was she channelling Nilsson's "lost" version or Badfinger's unknow version? Nice try.
Nilsson's version was a hit over Badfinger's, but that does not mean that their version was unknown to Mariah, as she has extensive knowledge of more obscure songs, as is evident through her sampling of music. And having an "original" hit is not necessarily an advantage in the Def. Version Cat., as is evident through songs like "I Will Always Love You" and the "Power of Love."
Many people, most of them who are probably Dolly Parton fans, may prefer her version, but it doesn't hold a candle to the popularity and worldwide appeal of Whitney's version. Just like most people couldn't tell you that Jennifer Rush is the originator of "The Power of Love," which was also covered by Laura Branigan and many others before Celine made it a the worldwide hit it is today.
There are a lot of Dolly fans. Dolly's DID appear on a gold lp and a different version was in a major motion picture before Whitney sang it, and her version is undeniably lovely. Some(not me) feel that Whitney's version is the epitome of Star Search (now known as American Idol) oversinging. I don't think the remake of Endless Love added anything musically and certainly not emotionally to the original.
I beg to differ. MC' version of WY is not the definitive version nor is "I'll be there", which I had forgotten she covered. I hear Nilsson's version all the time. I think MC fans give her more credit than she is due. Not that she doesn't deserve much, but you will never hear any great vocalist site MC as one of the greatest voices of any era. She is not that high on the poll, and I think it's largly due to the fact that she sings mostly bubble gum music. And too soon is her voice shot.
All that coupled with the fact that throughout her career, she was never polished on live tv where most can see. People have always known she lipped. So though she will forever have legions of fans, vocally she is not as highly regarded as Whitney. This is really just the truth. Real singers do rank other real singers, and MC is not that high up on the historical poll. Go to VH1 and check the votes. Aretha usually wins global votes.
Excuse me, it is only recently that she lipped, if you see all her old videos, they are most definitely live. And I do not know where you get your information, but Mriah is most definitely regarded as one of the greatest vocalists of all time. It is true that most of her music is not critically heralded, but her voice MOST deinitely is. Teh phrase "You are no Mariah" to anyone who can't sing has most definitely entered the lexicon.
Also, I never said that her version of "I'll Be There" was the definitive one. Scroll down to what I actually wrote because I will not repeat myself. But her version of "Without You" has far surpassed Nilsson's, just b/c YOU hear and may prefer his version more, doesn't mean that applies to everyone else. Mariah, despite the fact that her music is not critically heralded, is indeed regarded as one of the greatest vocalists of the past 20 years.
It is to Mariah that critics compare the likes of Beyonce, Kelly, Christina, etc., not Whitney any longer, and this you can verify by reading their reviews. If you have never heard that Whitney shares credit with Mariah and Celine as the best and most influential vocalists of the past 20 years, then that is more due to your selective hearing than actual reeality. Oh, and last time I heard, Whitney's voice was shot too.
One thing you said that was absolutely true...Whitney's voice is shot as well. I am a fan of both ladies, and will never lie. When do you get to speak for everyone else with regard to song/singer preference? You were corrected and changed your opin on "I'll be there" by another poster. I read very well.I also said real singers rank real singers and spoke of great vocalists opins.I also pointed you to historical polls like Vh1. Perhaps you have selective reading.
I am not speaking about ANYONE'S singer or song preference, because YOU did not say "I prefer Nilsson's WY" or "I don't THINK Mariah is one of the greatest vocalists of any era." You were speaking for the general public as to who is preferred. Therefore, I said that MAriah is indeed regarded as one of teh greatest vocalists by critics and general public alike and that her version of "Without You" has surpassed Nilsson's in terms of popularity and introduction to the public consciousness.
And even though you claim you read what I said in respect to Mariah's "Ill Be There" you apparently understood what YOU wanted to understand as you claimed I said it was the definitive version, when I clearly stated it wasn't. I said that her version has become standard because many people like or may even prefer her version.
There's a huge # of people all over the world that could sing along with 10 Ross/Franklin classics- Mariah-not so much. Like Clive Davis Said: Mariah's my friend but she knows Whitney and Re are the greatest.
Again, you are comparing Mariah to people who were out before she was even born. That is my point. Do you think that those classic Diana/Aretha songs were instantaneously so?
Well, of course. Why wouldn't it? It must be really flattering to watch someone you grew up listening to, sing one of your songs. I am not trying to pit Mariah against Aretha, in fact, my contention all along has been that it is quite unfair to do so, since Aretha's career spans almost 5 decades, to Mariah's 2.
Sorry. I wasn't clear, Mariah does have classic recordings but few classic songs as a composer. She would have even more classic recordings though, in my UNhumble opinion, if she sang better songs.
I am not sure there really is a difference. Because a lot of the artist you mentioned in contrast to Mariah have classic recordings, but not as composers.
Because YOU said so? "Hero," "All I Want for Christmas is You," her versions of "Without You" and "I'll Be There" are already standards and they are just over a decade old. Yes, the last two are remakes but Whitney and Aretha have both turned remakes into classics as well.
Nillson's and Michael's #1 versions of the above songs remain the definitive version. And you validated my assertion that Mariah's songwriting skills are mediocre by the fact that 1/2 of "her" classics that you mentioned were wriiten by others. BUT, Mariah is one of the greatest singers of this era--no doubt. Lots of songs written by great singers (Wonder,Aretha,Baez,Dolly,Streisand ETC)are mediocre but sound great on recordingss because of their exceptional perfomances.
Most or many of Gladys Knight's or Whitney's songs (which are written by pro songwriters) are blah too, but their fantastic singing puts them over. Just like Mariah with
I am not arguing the quality of Mariah's lyrics. I am arguing your assertion that Mariah will never have a classic song because of her "medicre" lyrics. Yet you have named many singers who you claim have "blah" songs, yet happen to have standards. My point is that you don't need magnificent lyrics to have a standard song.
Sorry, you are sorely mistaken. Mariah's version of "Without You" has completely eclipsed Nilsson's version as it is her version that people try to imitate on all those "talent" shows, and it is her version that most people recognize. Now, Mariah's version of "I'll Be There" has not eclipsed the original, but her version is also emblazoned in the minds of the general public.
Mariah fans, guess what, you all speak of her as if though her voice is not all cracked up and hoarse now. She has ruined it and you all have not accepted the fact that she has been lipsyncing in concert for years now. Thats why you still think she is so wonderful. She was in her day! She never sings a whole song live anymore. Every high note is lipped. Thats why next to Aretha on stage live,... NOTHING!!!!!
ok that lipsynging thing is getting rediculous. sure she lyps a song but not everytime!i admit that mariah lost quite alot of vocal ability but she can still a whole song live!
Aretha cant sing any songs she wants too because mariah has something aretha will never happen. A real singing voice, aretha may have had a good voice back then, but mariah is on a whole different level then her. Mariah can actually sing much much better than aretha. Aretha sounds like a hot mess now.
no... Aretha Franklin can sing opera, country, jazz, gospel, she can scat (which Mariah Carey can't do), gospel, soul, pop, blues, swing, anything... there is not a genre she couldn't do... she can even rap (i've heard her rap a lin in r-e-s-p-e-c-t before) Aretha's voice has changed over time,b ut through each ovcal change she has learned to present the most souful, warm, passionate music around. Aretha is teh queen of soul and she will never b e outdone by some pop singer
nah ah! mariah can do opera, jazz, gospel, soul, pop, blues... i dont think she can do swing, i havent heard her singing that genre... about country music, let us see if she can do that. in tenessee, she is a country singer i think...
You know the difference between what you just said and what ZebFAN06 said? Aretha has song all those different genre's, so there is proof. Mariah on the other hand has not. I have never seen her sing a true Gospel song nor a Jazz, Blues or Country song. While Mariah's mother may have been an Opera Diva...I have never seen a video or heard a performance of Mariah singing Opera.
cause u dont watch some mariah vids... like what's like to be mariah... some docu... ive seen her doing opera @bachelor jazZ@i cat remember the vid (she's is other country in a resto) country@soon maybe on tenessee movie... she also did a opera(theater), forgot the title...(t
well if she cant be out done by a pop singer why can mariah out sing her....if shes the queen of soul why dont people notice her as one of the world's greatest singers....its all about mariah....big girl can take a seat her time is long past...
people do notice aretha as one of the greatest singers in the world... She excelled in soul and a large amount of her hits game from that, but she beautifully nailed other genres.
great...but shes not a mariah carey....listen to how they sing...it doesnt matter if you like mariah better or aretha better...listen to how they sing....mariah's range is one in a million....
Why don't people notice Aretha as one of the worlds greatest singers? Are you serious? I can't even respond to this. Are you from this planet? Its one thing to be a fan, but not totally disillusioned.
mariah is a god compared to aretha...aretha sounds like every other black woman who comes from church mariah's voice in one a bilionn soo "bigdogg" is it....shut up u dont make any sense...and the only reason why everyone thinks aretha is the best is because shes been around for 1000 years. And in all that time still hasnt managed to have the success as mariah....ouch...
Guess what young one. God does not lipsync! Respect your elders and know your history. Mariah lost her voice 10 years ago, so sit down somewhere and chill, it's not serious enough to make a fool of yourself in cyberspace. Both ladies deserve respect, and no need to put one down to lift the other. Aretha is the black lady from the church who all of the others sound like.
but mariah still sounds better....and after respect did aretha really have another big hit...no and ever since then she never really did have a good voice...she sounds like a screaming bird.
I just don't understand why there are so many arguments over who is the best. Who cares! If you like one over the other that is your opinion. You cannot argue w/ppl and meke them like one more than the other. Shes your fav, so what! To say something so dumb as Aretha isn't included w/the greats, just cause Miriah is your pick makes you look like a kindergartener. move on please
"Mariah's NAMES right" Check your own spelling and grammer before correcting others youngster. Ok, yeah right, Aretha only had one hit, had no voice after, and did not sell well over 100k records all over the world. Thanks for the education kid. Then how did she ever make it to Divas live to sing her "god" Mariah and manage to win 19 grammys? I'm done commenting w/you. You are not worthy! Take care.
i will take care...and whatever makes helps your dumbass sleep at night thinking aretha is the best....but for people with taste mariah is soo much better than aretha...
Aretha is wonderful here and will always be wonderful. Aretha can sing anybody's song if she wants to! She makes it her own and her fans loves it! That's why she's the Queen and all the others are fighting for for princess!
Aretha can't hit Mariah's whistle register of course, but as far as her full voice upper notes, Aretha can all over those. It's only the whislte register that Aretha can't do, and Mariah doesn't even make use of that in this song. Aretha has FAR more vocal power than Mariah. This is not to say she is inifinitely better, because Mariah is a powerhouse herself. But to say Aretha could POSSIBLY ruin a Mariah song is sheer insanity.
yea she did ruin this song. ok aretha songs like a screaming bird and mariah has soo much more power when shes singing this song...hands down this is mariahs song soo she sings it better
Aretha like a screaming bird? You are crazy..Mariah is the one that screams. Have you ever listened to an Aretha Franklin song? If you can't hear her soul it's prob because you don't have any so you don't understand what you are hearing.
ok maybe u should shut up cause ur just ramblig on about bullshit. Now this isnt a gospel song its an R & B song and its mariahs song shes sings it best now tell whale to sit down cause she cant sing.
aretha and mariah do the same kind of singing both of their voices are rooted in gospel, mariah may a better singer on some songs (she has a much more beautiful voice)but she said herself she dosn't sing as good as aretha (she did on her christmas abulm)
No way - Mariah's voice is so much more dynamic than Aretha's. Hero is an Emotional ballad, not a Gospel number. Aretha may be the queen of Soul, but Mariah is the Queen of Pop. Finished.
Aretha sings all songs in the same way(just loud)no technic and i was missing the feeling when she was singing hero it´s a emotinonal ballad not a gospel number thanx for mention that ajthomas22 your are right.
It's 35 seconds of a clib, you don't know how she song it! You didn't even get to hear her sing the entire song. If Aretha did sing everything like Gospel...what's wrong with that?
That is debatable. What makes you think that you're the best person to pass a judgement around here? Aretha may be the queen of soul but that doesn't mean that there is no room for mistakes.
i thought that it was a lazy reinterpretation. i admit that Aretha is the Queen of Soul and a MUCH better singer than Mariah BUT she wanted to put her own spin on the song and she didn't seem to spen any time doing so ... it was horrible. I still love her but it was a lazy interpretation.
I don't like it I don't like Aretha's voice its so low, airy and she doesn't finish her notes properly. She's still the Queen of Soul but she didn't do to well on this song.I wanna hear her and Patti Labelle sing against each other even though Patti will win.
Wow. Mariah is probably so happy (if she has/had any idea) about Aretha singing a song she wrote and performed. Ms.Franklin is one of her several idols.
For the person that said Aretha messed this song up, you must be crazy because the entire clip was up here a couple of months ago and she killed it. Her phrasing technique is un-matched, and she did a run at the end that was outstanding.
I love Aretha, but this cover is terrible. I mean it's "soulful"....but the song doesn't fit her voice.

Aretha has sung touch my body of mariah Carey .............. brilliantly for Aretha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also the album The Ballads that Hero contains is Top 10 (Hot debut) in Billboard!!! congratulations Mariah

hahaha okay just like aretha is in delusion that anything that comes out of her mouth is good your in delusion that mariah is medicore because if that was so then why did she get artist of the millenium award, artist of the decade award, 5 grammy's and about 200 more awards to top that or proclaimed best selling female artist of all time as of this year. and why is she second only to the beatles in number 1 hits.. hmm looks like u and ur screaming moocow loose
you are the weakest link Goodbye

You are the delusional one. And so she has 5 grammys Aretha has 21 grammy the most grammys win out of any female. Mariah is good but she will never be as respected in music as Aretha .

all you get from her is church and screaming honey.. mariah can do pop, she can do r&b
MCtheynglegend 3 years ago
Aretha can sing anything. And Aretha never screamed. She got her mixed up with Patti. All Mariah can sing is pop. She is medicore in everyother genre.

i like the legends of the past but when aretha tried this shity atempt of hero it just shows that she can only sing one way no diversity in her voice.. but diana i do respect for the road she has paved for many young artist like mariah but vocally she cant compare with mariah... and like you say mariah does show great respect for the legends but the legends show great respect for her so why you hating on mariah ????
MCtheynglegend 3 years ago
There is nothing shitty about this version of Hero. I think Aretha did an amazing job with this song. And how are you going to say Aretha has no diversity in her voice. Aretha can sing anything and has. Aretha is the only singer that can successful sing any genre of music. Unlike Mariah, all her songs sound the same and she has no diversity what so ever. And Ross was the singer that influence Mariah it was Aretha. And Aretha has left a bigger impact on the music industry than anyother singer
TheQueenAretha 3 years ago
Aretha did a big impact coz in her time there's no Mariah,Celine and Whitney...What if these DIVAS debuted together with Aretha???...Do you think Aretha can be a queen of soul or whatever...Just think about how Mariah erode the charts and awards...You cant compare thier times since they are not debuted together...And do you know Randy Jackson???..He just quoted Mariah that she can sing ANYTHING...all are in Mariah's lungs...Of course its a suicide for Aretha to compare her range to Mariah
Muzicx44 2 years ago 2
Of course she still would have been. There was no one like Aretha and there never will be another Aretha. Her voice is comparable. And who cares what Randy saids, he wouldn't know talent if it bit him on the ass. And what he said was a flat out lie. Mariah is a not able to sing any song that she wants. She is not verstaile enough to do that. Her interpretation skill are 3rd rate to say the least. And without the whistle not Aretha n Mc have the range but Ree uses her voice better.
TheQueenAretha 2 years ago
Well Mariah can sing RnB,Hip-hop,Pop,Ballad,Asian song and etc...Talent is talent...Mariah just stated her influences...But just notice the authenticity of her music...She never ever copy her idols...She has her talent greater than Aretha...I only compliment Aretha for maintaining her voice...
Muzicx44 2 years ago
Wow though genre are real stretches. Ballads aren't even a genre of music. And Hip-Hop, RnB and Pop aren't that difficult. Can Mariah take a song and make it hers and only hers no. Mariah's so called talent is nowhere near as great as the Queen. That is the bottom line.
TheQueenAretha 2 years ago
I already watched maybe not all Aretha's vids and Mariah's vids...And the main bottom line is Mariah the gift and Aretha the respected
Muzicx44 2 years ago
Mariah, Celine, and Whitney don't have a thing on Aretha. Without her they wouldn't be who they were. And without Aretha they would know what it means to really sing. Because Aretha influence both Whitney and Mariah.
TheQueenAretha 2 years ago
I am huge fan of Aretha as well...But you cant compare Aretha's gift to Celine,Whitney and Mariah...They are on stardom its because of their talent...Not because of Aretha's presence
Muzicx44 2 years ago
@Muzicx44 thats a good statment but what about all the power houses that debuted with Franklin maybe there was no Mariah Celine or Whitney but there was Ella, Dinah, Fontella, Patti, Gladys and so much more those singers back in my day could easily have beat some of those artist and maybe aretha aint got careys range heck she hardly got anyones range but she has more feeking and depth to her seasoned voice but i agree we shouldnt comapre the 2
rollsroycecooley1 2 years ago
Yeah I agree those powerhouses were really huge...And I also hailed Aretha for being on top among them...I mean...If Mariah in her prime has beautiful chest-voice,,,Aretha got soul and power...They are both powerhouses vocalists...And they are beginning to be rare...Since the music today is more on digital enhanced sounds
Muzicx44 2 years ago
@rollsroycecooley1 What the hell are you talking about. Aretha in her prime has a very expansive range. Her lowest was a G2 and she even belted a D6. Aretha's chest voice is higher than MC.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha well i worded the comment wrong i was saying aretha had competetion in her day but still came out on top but when i mentioned her range i was talkin bout modern times she may not have the range she used to but she still more seasoned and perfectioned in her singing i kno bak n the day she was sumthin and still is 2 day when she wanna be

Sorry.

zaldy2000 3 years ago
It's clear you don't know anything about singing. It's not about sales, range and blablah. EVERYONE from Patti to Streisand have all said time and time again that when it comes to singing, Aretha is in a class entirely by herself. Period. BTW, you might not want Mariah to hear saying what you just said here coz I guarantee you that she'll be the first to bitch slap you into another century!
goebels99 3 years ago
mimi rippton can hit note higher than some opera singers.FOOL!!
269hotgirl 3 years ago
Yeah but minnie ripperton can't sing like mariah. And I dont mean the whistle. I mean, in her real singing voice. Her voice is nowhere near mariah's height
bchavez2 4 years ago 6
I'll give you that. But being more powerful does not make you a singer. That's what some fools on here don't seem to understand. For example, Diana Ross is a superior singer to Mariah any day. It's about the phrasing and emotional register a singer can attain in performing a song. The rest is just pointless. No one has "the VOICE" as the idiot above says coz not everyone in history (including the future) has yet been heard. Just enjoy the music folks. Stop all this nonsense comparisons!!!
goebels99 3 years ago
Ross is way under-rated. Her considerable midrange is VERY clear, powerful, fluid and resonant. She has more VERY well know hits around the world than any other woman, period.
Kids and great grandparents all over the world known Baby Love etc.
That said, Mariah is also a treasure to the music world also, without a doubt.
taddyd1 3 years ago
Mariah always comes up on top because of technical background and training. Her mom was an opera singer so naturally, she has the better trained voice. She can do more with her voice. Aretha is alright. But she don't come close to mariah's vocal ability.
bchavez2 4 years ago
and, maraih was inspired by Minnie Riperton, i read in the wikipedia that when mariah was still very young, she tries to imitate Minnie's whistle notes..! and mariah's technique was inspired by minnie..!
yenyd14344 4 years ago
that's wikipedia!

Anyway, what does it matter? They're both fantastic artists, no matter what.
DivaLoverOne 4 years ago

ROSIE O'DONNELL: "Now is it OVERWHELMING for you to be singing with the people you grew up idolizing?"
MARIAH CAREY: "Totally! Aretha Franklin...first of all that was just completely INTIMIDATING...and you know...the QUEEN OF SOUL...you don't need to be standing next to the Queen of Soul trying to sing...so you know...I was really NERVOUS..."

bigdogg11 4 years ago
thank i am special
daven688 4 years ago
They are both natural wonders. Remember when Aretha was peaking women were much less promoted, esp Black women. By the way a number 12 hit by Aretha may have sold more than a number 1 by Mariah. Back then a gold single was 1 millon copies, now it's 250 thousand combined cd, tape & download. Aretha had gold singles that didn't even make the top ten. She paved the way and you know Mariah and everyone else knows it.
taddyd1 4 years ago
but now its time for aretha to step aside. and just because she "paved" the way doesnt make her better or more talented. Think about mariah writes, produces, and over sees every aspect of makin her music not singing someone elses song.
daven688 4 years ago
great music is not a competition. Don't forget everybody thought vision of love was Whitney when it came out and that was certainly Tommy Matol's goal.
taddyd1 4 years ago
I just love people who think they have the future all figured out. What do you know which songs will be covered 10-15 years from now? People don't cover Mariah songs for the same reason they don't cover songs of most artists with big voices, because they can't do them justice, no matter what YOU think may be the quality of the songs.
nyuman86 4 years ago
Add to that reason the fact that Mariah is still an active artist and she has only been around for 17 years. Because of music channels and the Internet, everything she has done is still fresh in the minds of the public. Comparing her to someone who has been around since the 50s is just insane. And for the life of me I have yet to understand what is so Whitney-esque about "Vision of Love" as this song does not resemble any of her overblown 80s ballads.
nyuman86 4 years ago
Aretha is active too.
taddyd1 4 years ago
Please, the vast majority of Aretha's standards are either older than Mariah herself, or were released when Mariah was a child. Even though Aretha is still active, there isn't this sense of immediacy like there is with Mariah, since most of what Mariah has done is fresh in the minds of people who are in their late 20s and older.
nyuman86 4 years ago
Its maybe fresher to you because your from MC's era and she still is hanging in there with major lable million $ promotion. But great music, women and wine are nver dated. Recorded music goes back to the 20s. Very recently Clive Davis said Whitney and Re are the 2 greatest living Singers. I saw Re recently and 1/2 the material she hasn't even recorded-that's active.
taddyd1 4 years ago
A standard song is a song with CULTURAL resonance, despite the quality. You ask most people which version of "Without You" they are familiar with, and they will say Mariah's. And I didn't say Aretha was not acttiver. I distinctly remember saying that Aretha's doesn't have the same sense of immediacy as Mariah as her carer is much longer. And askimg Clive Davis who the best singers are is like asking a person from Boston which team the will root for in the World Series.
nyuman86 4 years ago
Point well made re: Clive. Re: Nilsson he's considered one of pop's great Voices and squandered careers. John Lennon produced his lps(a very rare honor) and the Beatles worshipped him. Randy Newman choose him to sing his SongBook.
taddyd1 4 years ago
Still, that is all fine and dandy, but that does not mean that his version of "Without You" is the definitive one. YOU may prefer it, but as far as standards go, it is Mariah's. Do you think Kelly Clarkson was channeling Nilsson when she performed it on Idol?
nyuman86 4 years ago
no Mariah, But Nilsson's was huge and is still played in movies and on oldies staions.
The original usually has the advantage in the difinitive category. And I think on the record she blew one of the hooks with her change (at least she did try a change, unlike many remakes). I saw her sing a live version that was exceptional. Wish she would sing more standards, mix one or 2 in each cd. Re has always song from all genres and made the songs her own and so could MC.
taddyd1 4 years ago
Well that would be true, but Nilsson is not the original singer of "Without You," Badfinger is. He just revamped the song, so that is part of the reason why his version is not regarded as the definitive one. His seems to be kind of lost in the shuffle.
nyuman86 4 years ago
Badfinger didn't have a hit(not even a single) with WY. Re owns Respect over Otis because she had the hit (he did have a R&B charting) Nilsson had the original hit which gets the advantge in the Definitive Version Category. Like boxing and figure skating the champ wins if there's a tie. BTW, the Brits like her covers better also, those are her only # 1 there. She DOES own that P Collins song though. (Was she channelling Nilsson's "lost" version or Badfinger's unknow version? Nice try.
taddyd1 4 years ago
Nilsson's version was a hit over Badfinger's, but that does not mean that their version was unknown to Mariah, as she has extensive knowledge of more obscure songs, as is evident through her sampling of music. And having an "original" hit is not necessarily an advantage in the Def. Version Cat., as is evident through songs like "I Will Always Love You" and the "Power of Love."
nyuman86 4 years ago
Many do prefer dolly over whitney on that song but not me.
taddyd1 4 years ago
Many people, most of them who are probably Dolly Parton fans, may prefer her version, but it doesn't hold a candle to the popularity and worldwide appeal of Whitney's version. Just like most people couldn't tell you that Jennifer Rush is the originator of "The Power of Love," which was also covered by Laura Branigan and many others before Celine made it a the worldwide hit it is today.
nyuman86 4 years ago
There are a lot of Dolly fans. Dolly's DID appear on a gold lp and a different version was in a major motion picture before Whitney sang it, and her version is undeniably lovely. Some(not me) feel that Whitney's version is the epitome of Star Search (now known as American Idol) oversinging. I don't think the remake of Endless Love added anything musically and certainly not emotionally to the original.
taddyd1 4 years ago
I beg to differ. MC' version of WY is not the definitive version nor is "I'll be there", which I had forgotten she covered. I hear Nilsson's version all the time. I think MC fans give her more credit than she is due. Not that she doesn't deserve much, but you will never hear any great vocalist site MC as one of the greatest voices of any era. She is not that high on the poll, and I think it's largly due to the fact that she sings mostly bubble gum music. And too soon is her voice shot.
radical11 4 years ago
All that coupled with the fact that throughout her career, she was never polished on live tv where most can see. People have always known she lipped. So though she will forever have legions of fans, vocally she is not as highly regarded as Whitney. This is really just the truth. Real singers do rank other real singers, and MC is not that high up on the historical poll. Go to VH1 and check the votes. Aretha usually wins global votes.
radical11 4 years ago
Excuse me, it is only recently that she lipped, if you see all her old videos, they are most definitely live. And I do not know where you get your information, but Mriah is most definitely regarded as one of the greatest vocalists of all time. It is true that most of her music is not critically heralded, but her voice MOST deinitely is. Teh phrase "You are no Mariah" to anyone who can't sing has most definitely entered the lexicon.
nyuman86 4 years ago
Also, I never said that her version of "I'll Be There" was the definitive one. Scroll down to what I actually wrote because I will not repeat myself. But her version of "Without You" has far surpassed Nilsson's, just b/c YOU hear and may prefer his version more, doesn't mean that applies to everyone else. Mariah, despite the fact that her music is not critically heralded, is indeed regarded as one of the greatest vocalists of the past 20 years.
nyuman86 4 years ago
It is to Mariah that critics compare the likes of Beyonce, Kelly, Christina, etc., not Whitney any longer, and this you can verify by reading their reviews. If you have never heard that Whitney shares credit with Mariah and Celine as the best and most influential vocalists of the past 20 years, then that is more due to your selective hearing than actual reeality. Oh, and last time I heard, Whitney's voice was shot too.
nyuman86 4 years ago
One thing you said that was absolutely true...Whitney's voice is shot as well. I am a fan of both ladies, and will never lie. When do you get to speak for everyone else with regard to song/singer preference? You were corrected and changed your opin on "I'll be there" by another poster. I read very well.I also said real singers rank real singers and spoke of great vocalists opins.I also pointed you to historical polls like Vh1. Perhaps you have selective reading.
radical11 4 years ago
I am not speaking about ANYONE'S singer or song preference, because YOU did not say "I prefer Nilsson's WY" or "I don't THINK Mariah is one of the greatest vocalists of any era." You were speaking for the general public as to who is preferred. Therefore, I said that MAriah is indeed regarded as one of teh greatest vocalists by critics and general public alike and that her version of "Without You" has surpassed Nilsson's in terms of popularity and introduction to the public consciousness.
nyuman86 4 years ago
And even though you claim you read what I said in respect to Mariah's "Ill Be There" you apparently understood what YOU wanted to understand as you claimed I said it was the definitive version, when I clearly stated it wasn't. I said that her version has become standard because many people like or may even prefer her version.
nyuman86 4 years ago
There's a huge # of people all over the world that could sing along with 10 Ross/Franklin classics- Mariah-not so much. Like Clive Davis Said: Mariah's my friend but she knows Whitney and Re are the greatest.
taddyd1 4 years ago
Again, you are comparing Mariah to people who were out before she was even born. That is my point. Do you think that those classic Diana/Aretha songs were instantaneously so?
nyuman86 4 years ago
You KNOW it made Mariah's year when Re (her 2nd greatest influence-Behind Marilyn & Ahead of Stevie) performed this song.
taddyd1 4 years ago
What are you talking about?
nyuman86 4 years ago
Maybe you missed that interview, that's an MC quote. (Monroe by the way)
taddyd1 4 years ago
Well, of course. Why wouldn't it? It must be really flattering to watch someone you grew up listening to, sing one of your songs. I am not trying to pit Mariah against Aretha, in fact, my contention all along has been that it is quite unfair to do so, since Aretha's career spans almost 5 decades, to Mariah's 2.
nyuman86 4 years ago
Sorry. I wasn't clear, Mariah does have classic recordings but few classic songs as a composer. She would have even more classic recordings though, in my UNhumble opinion, if she sang better songs.
taddyd1 4 years ago
I am not sure there really is a difference. Because a lot of the artist you mentioned in contrast to Mariah have classic recordings, but not as composers.
nyuman86 4 years ago
The lyrics are quite adolescent. Love Mariah bur her songs will not become standards.
taddyd1 4 years ago
Because YOU said so? "Hero," "All I Want for Christmas is You," her versions of "Without You" and "I'll Be There" are already standards and they are just over a decade old. Yes, the last two are remakes but Whitney and Aretha have both turned remakes into classics as well.
nyuman86 4 years ago
Nillson's and Michael's #1 versions of the above songs remain the definitive version. And you validated my assertion that Mariah's songwriting skills are mediocre by the fact that 1/2 of "her" classics that you mentioned were wriiten by others. BUT, Mariah is one of the greatest singers of this era--no doubt. Lots of songs written by great singers (Wonder,Aretha,Baez,Dolly,Streisand ETC)are mediocre but sound great on recordingss because of their exceptional perfomances.
taddyd1 4 years ago
Most or many of Gladys Knight's or Whitney's songs (which are written by pro songwriters) are blah too, but their fantastic singing puts them over. Just like Mariah with
her blah self-penned songs.
taddyd1 4 years ago
I am not arguing the quality of Mariah's lyrics. I am arguing your assertion that Mariah will never have a classic song because of her "medicre" lyrics. Yet you have named many singers who you claim have "blah" songs, yet happen to have standards. My point is that you don't need magnificent lyrics to have a standard song.
nyuman86 4 years ago
Sorry, you are sorely mistaken. Mariah's version of "Without You" has completely eclipsed Nilsson's version as it is her version that people try to imitate on all those "talent" shows, and it is her version that most people recognize. Now, Mariah's version of "I'll Be There" has not eclipsed the original, but her version is also emblazoned in the minds of the general public.
nyuman86 4 years ago
Mariah fans, guess what, you all speak of her as if though her voice is not all cracked up and hoarse now. She has ruined it and you all have not accepted the fact that she has been lipsyncing in concert for years now. Thats why you still think she is so wonderful. She was in her day! Why don't people notice Aretha as one of the worlds greatest singers? Are you serious? I can't even respond to this. Are you from this planet? Its one thing to be a fan, but not totally disillusioned.
bigdogg11 4 years ago
mariah is a god compared to aretha...aretha sounds like every other black woman who comes from church mariah's voice in one a bilionn soo "bigdogg" is it....shut up u dont make any sense...and the only reason why everyone thinks aretha is the best is because shes been around for 1000 years. And in all that time still hasnt managed to have the success as mariah....ouch...
daven688 4 years ago
Guess what young one. God does not lipsync! Respect your elders and know your history. Mariah lost her voice 10 years ago, so sit down somewhere and chill, it's not serious enough to make a fool of yourself in cyberspace. Both ladies deserve respect, and no need to put one down to lift the other. Aretha is the black lady from the church who all of the others sound like.
radical11 4 years ago
but mariah still sounds better....and after respect did aretha really have another big hit...no and ever since then she never really did have a good voice...she sounds like a screaming bird.
daven688 4 years ago
I just don't understand why there are so many arguments over who is the best. Who cares! If you like one over the other that is your opinion. You cannot argue w/ppl and meke them like one more than the other. Shes your fav, so what! To say something so dumb as Aretha isn't included w/the greats, just cause Miriah is your pick makes you look like a kindergartener. move on please
bigdogg11 4 years ago
same should go for you...dont try to sound educated when you can't even spell mariah's names right...so take your own advice..move on.
daven688 4 years ago
"Mariah's NAMES right" Check your own spelling and grammer before correcting others youngster. Ok, yeah right, Aretha only had one hit, had no voice after, and did not sell well over 100k records all over the world. Thanks for the education kid. Then how did she ever make it to Divas live to sing her "god" Mariah and manage to win 19 grammys? I'm done commenting w/you. You are not worthy! Take care.
bigdogg11 4 years ago
i will take care...and whatever makes helps your dumbass sleep at night thinking aretha is the best....but for people with taste mariah is soo much better than aretha...

Go 'head, Ree!!!!

Aretha is wonderful here and will always be wonderful. Aretha can sing anybody's song if she wants to! She makes it her own and her fans loves it! That's why she's the Queen and all the others are fighting for for princess!
MrStyle 4 years ago
yea aretha shouldnt try to sing a mariah song when she cant hit the notes. even in this little clip i already know she ruined a really great song.
daven688 4 years ago
Aretha can't hit Mariah's whistle register of course, but as far as her full voice upper notes, Aretha can all over those. It's only the whislte register that Aretha can't do, and Mariah doesn't even make use of that in this song. Aretha has FAR more vocal power than Mariah. This is not to say she is inifinitely better, because Mariah is a powerhouse herself. But to say Aretha could POSSIBLY ruin a Mariah song is sheer insanity.
tcphilosopher 4 years ago
yea she did ruin this song. ok aretha songs like a screaming bird and mariah has soo much more power when shes singing this song...hands down this is mariahs song soo she sings it better
daven688 4 years ago
bullshit
mjoriginal 4 years ago
no its not bullshit its true...
daven688 4 years ago
Aretha like a screaming bird? You are crazy..Mariah is the one that screams. Have you ever listened to an Aretha Franklin song? If you can't hear her soul it's prob because you don't have any so you don't understand what you are hearing.
MrStyle 4 years ago
ok maybe u should shut up cause ur just ramblig on about bullshit. Now this isnt a gospel song its an R & B song and its mariahs song shes sings it best now tell whale to sit down cause she cant sing.
daven688 4 years ago
hero is not RnB
crybabydoll 4 years ago
mariah dont scream... listen to chain of fools... aretha always scream... i challenge u to listen a mariah song...

I have a feeling you don't know crap!
MrStyle 4 years ago
did mariah really write this song or did she co-write
im confused cuz thi video looks like it was made b4 mariah came out with it
jumpcc 4 years ago
mariah wrote it and Walter Afanasieff helped write the piano for it. aretha was singing this in 1994 but its a bad quality clip.
tubefan1001 4 years ago
aretha and mariah do the same kind of singing both of their voices are rooted in gospel, mariah may a better singer on some songs (she has a much more beautiful voice)but she said herself she dosn't sing as good as aretha (she did on her christmas abulm)
anthonymolie 4 years ago
No way - Mariah's voice is so much more dynamic than Aretha's. Hero is an Emotional ballad, not a Gospel number. Aretha may be the queen of Soul, but Mariah is the Queen of Pop. Finished.
ajthomas22 4 years ago
Nobody compares to Mariah, not even Aretha, however much of a legend she is...
ButterFlo 4 years ago
I totally agree.
Aretha sings all songs in the same way(just loud)no technic and i was missing the feeling when she was singing hero it´s a emotinonal ballad not a gospel number thanx for mention that ajthomas22 your are right.
shacks24 4 years ago
It's 35 seconds of a clib, you don't know how she song it! You didn't even get to hear her sing the entire song. If Aretha did sing everything like Gospel...what's wrong with that?
MrStyle 4 years ago
yeap mariah is much better.
singmeasong 4 years ago
i didn't like it
mariah sings much better than this
gregreis 4 years ago
Aretha sang it much better than... what's her name.
justdavon 4 years ago
Whatever - but Mariah wrote it herself!
Tiger1983DK 4 years ago
Calm down. I am not saying anything to disrespect Mariah but Aretha sings with far more soul and conviction, period.
justdavon 4 years ago
That is debatable. What makes you think that you're the best person to pass a judgement around here? Aretha may be the queen of soul but that doesn't mean that there is no room for mistakes.
makkaugile 4 years ago
CORRECT!!! Aretha sang this Hero with Lousy rendition,i agree with u Qinjang!!.
transhurray 5 years ago
i thought that it was a lazy reinterpretation. i admit that Aretha is the Queen of Soul and a MUCH better singer than Mariah BUT she wanted to put her own spin on the song and she didn't seem to spen any time doing so ... it was horrible. I still love her but it was a lazy interpretation.
Eightcrayondon 5 years ago
I don't like it I don't like Aretha's voice its so low, airy and she doesn't finish her notes properly. She's still the Queen of Soul but she didn't do to well on this song.I wanna hear her and Patti Labelle sing against each other even though Patti will win.
Paitian1717 5 years ago
Wow. Mariah is probably so happy (if she has/had any idea) about Aretha singing a song she wrote and performed. Ms.Franklin is one of her several idols.
ThEsUpReMeDiVo 5 years ago
how beautiful her voice is.
I can sing better.
mariahama2097 5 years ago
For the person that said Aretha messed this song up, you must be crazy because the entire clip was up here a couple of months ago and she killed it. Her phrasing technique is un-matched, and she did a run at the end that was outstanding.
johnathandoe 5 years ago
i totally agree, she sang it her way!
tubefan1001 5 years ago
wow! it is a great honor for mariah that aretha franklin sing a song from her!
LadyInDaHouse88 5 years ago
Great voice but she messed it up...lousy rendition.
Qinjang 5 years ago
where did she mess it up, cos i thought she sang it HER way really well?
tubefan1001 5 years ago
i dunno i've looked for it everywhere on the net, its just not about! sorry
tubefan1001 5 years ago
MOre more more! Encore please! Where can I find Franklin singing that?!?!
looker768 5 years ago
true enough; i just wish i had the whole song!
tubefan1001 5 years ago
wow, never thought i'd her sing a Mariah song. It's normally the other way around. I guess Hero can now be considered a classic.
