  • @lilspringgirl Yep, they are the same word standing for the meaning "o'clock" :)

  • This was very helpful as it helps with my learning of Chinese. Also the Peggy the teacher is so damn hot... maybe I might have trouble concentrating here.

  • @mortalhellion Hahaha. You will have to though. :)

  • Peggy, You make learning Chinese fun! Many Thanks!

  • so in taiwan people say "er4" instead of china saying "ar4'? hummmm... probalry an acent

  • Dui a.... :)

  • Im not sure if Im right but ...

I think you spelled "liu" wrong :S

  • Thanks so much!!! I just corrected it. :)

  • As Peggy says, pronunciation is not "wrong," it's just the local variation.

What we Westerners are taught (in just about every commercially available instruction media) is typically Putonghua, the official dialect of the PRC, which is based on the dialect of Beijing and Northern China.

  • Exactly! :)

  • I wonder can chinese kids learn chinese alphabet in a year (in elementary school)?

  • I believe so, or even less than a year. Kids here start to learn ㄅㄆㄇㄈ(Chinese alphabet) in kindergarten.

  • Very helpful peggy! keep it up!

  • Thank you! :)

  • Zheng is not pronounced 'zung' its pronounced 'jung'. Zeng is pronounced 'zung'.

  • Pinying has more than one version. I got this one from a dictionary though.

Thanks for pointing that out. :)

  • Zheng is never pronounced 'zeng'. You're clearly saying 'zeng'. That's called 齿音字. If I was teaching English I would not speak with an accent, I would try to say everything correctly. No offense intended, I just don't want people who are trying to learn Chinese to pronounce words incorrectly.

  • I'm not sure if I understand the problem I had with the pronunciation of that character though, I guess I will have to hear it. However, I have been trying and will continue to try to pronounce every single word as correctly as possible, if it's believed that I didn't pronounce some words clearly enough.

  • Yet what I would like to point out is everyone speak(even his/her vernacular tongue) with an accent, which usually indicates the person's background. As for me, my accent would be Mandarin spoken in the north of Taiwan.
