You obviously dont know much about starting big radial engines. The proper proceedure is to continue cranking with the fuel cut off, just as the pilot did in this instance. You are referring to a no start condition in which there is NO fire, in which case you are right.

Not real smart. The F4U should fire within 9 blade passes or be aborted to clear the cylinders. Standard practice.
