The June 1, 1953, for the first time the Tour of Italy on the Stelvio salt. Hugo Koblet collapses the pink jersey. Fausto Coppi salt alone up and won his fifth and final tour, equaling the record of Alfredo Binda. Eddy Merckx only able to imitate them in the 70s.
E' un po' controverso, perchè ho letto che Coppi voleva mantenere la promessa fatta a Hugo , ma il direttore di squadra e lo sponsor lo obbligarono ad attaccare sullo Stelvio . Kubler aveva una grande signorilità , un vero gentleman in bicicletta .

He was so fast...
Its hard to imagine a rider today going years without ever being caught on a breakaway.
Not to take anything away from Merckx but this guy was completely amazing!
Consider that his career was interrupted by WWII. Incredible.
