  • I love his ragging on 50 Cent

  • Monkey Island. Best. Game. Ever. Made. <3 rubber chicken!

  • GTA was always supposed to be over the top and really '80's.' I thought the cutscenes were hilarious.

  • "Writers have stopped reading books, they're just watching films." WOW. What an excellent point, and spot on.

That's exactly why entertainment is SUCKING so bad these days. It really shows.

  • GTA vice city was one of the best games created of all time. This fool has no clue what he is talking about.

  • @dcsroc1 It was a good game, but one of the best? It wasn't even one of the best in the gta series, nor was it vastly different in style to GTA III. In fact I'm pretty sure it used the same engine. The story was O.K, nothing amazing though, unless you've never seen a 1980's mafia themed film. Nothing new really came out of VC aside from helicopters and a broken plane you could keep in the air so long as you flew straight.

In (my) order of greatness 1,SA,III,VC,LC,2.

    Original is still best

  • @dcsroc1 No i wasn't,it was good,very good but not great.

  • also people jump out of the way in gta and left 4 dead stole its entire story and feel from 28 days later, not the creators supposed research of spanish flu

  • he's totally wrong about stories. gta vice city was based on scarface so of course it was like scarface but its also filled to the brim with story, characterisation and humour. also the entire rpg genre exists to give rich in-depth stories and take alot of inspiration from books

  • I would definitely buy Chompsky: Blood on the Sand.

  • Killzone 3 was written by real writers but it didn't make the story any better. It's going to take a real writer to make Killzone 4 work since it appears most of the bad guys are now dead.

  • I love Lawnmower games. It's one of those genres that's died out over time :(

  • Hover Bovver YES!

  • Is this guys examples of fleshed out stories L4D and CoD4?

    What?

  • Sorry I was distracted with the Beethoven playing in the background, what were you talking about?

  • @orkavorn P.S. 1:28 - With regard to, for example Tarantino, he seems to have hit the nail right on the head.

  • WTF who plays COD for the story

  • @ICE999KOLD I suspect a lot of people buy the next installments at least partly for the characters from previous games.

  • @ICE999KOLD The first Modern Warfare had a really good story IMO, like a cheesy 80s action thriller. Second MW can fuck off though.

  • @Whatupwidat Metal Gear Solid had a great storyline.

  • @Nautilus1972 Firstly, no it didn't - it was like someone regurgitated the X-files conspiracy storyline over a bad John Travolta film, and secondly - I didn't even mention Metal Gear Solid.

Unless you were being humerous, in which case disreguard this bile and accept my humblest apologies

  • What's the song at 7:06 ?

  • "ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US!" How can you top that story?!

  • Graham Lineham, games' stories have improved. Play Mass Effect and then Pacman afterwards.

  • I skipped over the guy in the dark room with the black hair talking about writing in video games. He seemed to be under the impression that imaginative writing automatically meant good writing. Then he also happened to pass over games like Kotor, Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect and Bioshock.

  • @GearsOfRevan Mass Effect and Bioshock were after this TV show was aired.

  • @monkeytail2002 No, this show aired in 2009. Both those games were released prior to that.

  • ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US

  • I don't agree with Graham Linehan, he praises games like COD for having amazing story lines and doesn't mention games that really do have really good story lines Shenmue, Okami and most Zelda games.

  • @CornishCreamtea07 Think he is taling about real like games like COD, GTA etc. not the fantasy world ones

  • @OmegaRFox

Well that's Okami and Zelda out, but Shenmue is a real world game.

  • Shenmue had one of the best storyline's seen in a video game (albeit some dodgy voice acting). Shame it hasn't been finished. Didn't make enough cash I guess.

  • @reeft: that's Beethoven's symphony no 7, second movement (allegretto) a truly masterpiece

  • CAPTAIN PRICE DIDN'T DIE, HE LIVES ON IN ALL OUR HEARTS....

    and he's in mw2 I suppose...

  • LOL I love the part about that shit 50 Cent thing. And even the YouTube arguments are glorious. :D

  • Anyone recognize the music that is playing in the background when Graham Linnehan is talking?

  • Oddly enough, I actually found the characters in CoJ deeper than in MW.

  • Is this background music American Idiot? Sounds like it.

  • VICE CITY WAS FUCKING AMAZING! that and gta4 the best ones to date

  • The guy at the start obviously missed the point of Vice City...It's supposed to be inspired by films rather than the real life Miami

  • All your base are belong to us...

  • seriously writing in games is only getting better

  • The guy at 0:34 has obviously never played Mass Effect.

  • @TheFreemanization Bioware are the exception that prove the rule... and Dragon Age 2 is the exception that proves this.

  • @TheFreemanization that is, it's the only "bad" bioware game.

  • 50 Cent had a swear button that give you a bonus for using it. It is the HEIGHT of low culture.

  • The Consolvania guys are pretty chill nerds...I like them + that accent is something different!

  • I love how 50 is more realistic as a CHARACTER in Black Ops whilst playing Bowman, than he is as HIMSELF.

  • They hate the story, if they'd made this today instead of two years ago, they could have had stuff like Heavy Rain and LA Noire.

  • @DrunkRussian2 They didn't even need to wait. I hate it when people accept story in videogames is bad without at least mentioning games with good story like Planescape: Torment or The Longest Journey. Instead we get Fiddy and Wolfenstein type of games.

  • @derdelush I've just remembered stuff like beyond good and evil as well. Those are just two of my most memorable ones.

  • I don't know about CoJBiB -- I thought the game made it pretty clear that the two playable brothers were *supposed* to be mentally unstable bastards brutalised by the war, and not generic Vaguely Heroic Shooter Protagonists like you usually get. I mean there's even the loading screen narration from the milquetoast third brother for anyone too slow to pick up on it during the game...

  • Writers haven't stopped reading books. Execs just stopped hiring writers who read books, because they won't write what the people who think they know what we want to watch want them to.

The last 25 years haven't even been about trying to make something that will make cash, they've been about trying to REMAKE something someone else already made that made cash. It's understandable and good capitalism, but it makes for shit TV, films and games.

Writer who read books mostly write books nowadays.

  • @reluctable

I chose to take your remark as, good capitalism is bad for society!

    Totally agree!

  • haha "Noam Chomsky: Blood On The Sand"

  • haha rab and ryan, please bring consolevania back

  • I was thinking about what Graham Linehan said about games and storytelling when I played 'Red Dead Redemption'. I thought that did really well in making you like a character, wanting him to succeed and making a really gripping storyline.

  • it's only a matter of time before games are widely accepted by everyone. they are already a bigger money maker than movies and party games/Wiis have introduced people of all ages to them. in 20-30 years, those of us who grew up with Nintendos and Segas will be in our 60s and there won't be this weird generation gap that doesn't get it.

  • fuck these assholes, what they know about games anyway.

  • Noam Chomsky Blood on the Sand

    WANT

  • Try Bioware or Kojima bra.

  • The criticisms of vice city are fair, but GTAIV's story was outstanding and it features the best characters ever in a video game and a far more realistic and immersive setting etc. It's hilarious that he is praising left 4 dead's story when it was negligible and far more similar to a generic movie than GTA. The problem with GTA is how much depth it has, makes people scrutinise it a lot more. It's easy to make a perfect game if you're making a shallow one (zelda/ico/portal), not so much for gta.

  • Really? You're going to use that which spawned Engrish as an example of Game storylines? Try a bioware game, dude.

  • @MandibleMuge

I think he's using it as an example of how story lines were very simplistic (opening scene, then game) when gaming first started out. Everything else has gotten better (graphics, gameplay, etc.) but the storyline of basic opening scene and shooting has remained pretty much the same.

  • @Dextrophobia But storytelling has certainly gotten significantly better. That's not to say it's now brilliant or perfect, but it has definitely gotten better... (Though that's not saying much)

  • I was almost shocked when Graham Lineman said "I think a lot of game writers have stopped reading books and are only watching films", cause I was just thinking about that the other day! But I think it goes for songwriters and film writers too.

  • "Oh, what a massive arsehole!" Great stuff, Charlie!

  • 50's game - LOL REVIEW

  • 50'a game - LOLLLLLs

  • @WeNeedSomeGolfShoes Brilliant Gameplay and Brilliant Story go hand in hand to create a perfect game. If you only have Brilliant gameplay, then it will never be perfect, just brilliant (like Quake). Albeit, a game with a Brilliant Story and shit gameplay would be shit, so ofcourse Gameplay is key, but do not downplay Story. I prefer Dark Forces to Quake purely because it has a strong story (both games/series have brilliant gameplay) but because Dark Forces has a story, it is better.

  • the scottish guy is that nutter that did the independant charles show on the xbox dashboard..... its was mental,

  • Left 4 Dead wasn't published by EA?

  • left for dead had a shit plot... the first getaway was the only game i played with a worthwhile plot

  • @busessuck1 then it will no doubt boil your blood to hear that Black ops has a nomination at the games baftas for best story

  • Having played an online remake of JSW and seeing its creator, Matt Smith, in an old C4 documentary, I conclude that pot needs to be legalised.

  • all your base are belong to us get in meme mention

  • Wait, so he dislikes video games because they represent people who don't read enough and whose research comes entirely from video games (like GTA), then goes on to state one of his favourite games is 'driver' because it reminds him of "classic cop movies" such as 'the french conection'? What a complete mother fucking hypocrite...

  • Captain Price has the most awesome mustache in the video gaming world.

  • Storytelling is getting lazy? Have they heard of Elder Scrolls?

  • @Revan540 It's not 2002 anymore, Toto.

  • @dystopianlover Sorry, I get the lone ranger reference but not the 2002 thing. Let's assume you count with your hands.

  • @Revan540 ''how doez I realize Obliveun shat gaem? :~:''

    Y'see, Biowarefag, Oblivion was shit.

    Morrowind was not shit.

    Morrowind came out in 2002.

Hence; 'it's not 2002 anymore, Toto.'

  • left 4 dead gives me a head ache, the getaway was also a great game , with a good story line too.

  • @joeymod135 ...I literally just copied your exact comment

  • they should not have brought back Price

  • left for dead has a story?

  • @rjc0234 yes. You have to kill the zombies

  • Graham was right about Captain Price's tash! Thankfully he didn't die! lol

  • I had Hover Bover on the C64. Shite.

  • monkey island was the best game ive ever played........honestly its so funny and well written plus you can spend hours playing it without getting bored.

  • yaaaa rob n ryan!

  • i'm sick of fucktards who think games are just

HEY GO SHOOT THIS AND KILL THIS

    In the ways of plot

  • All your base are belong to us.

  • WOAH!!! I so badly wanna play that 50 cent game. it looks so awesome-funny

  • What Graham says about the beginning of games dragging on, reminded me of the beginning of Shemue. Boy, did that drag on!

  • LOL if you take all of the cutaway screens and record them you can load up a game on an Amstrad, where you take on the role of Charlie Brooker's penis!

  • Wait, is this Graham Linehan guy a total idiot? Call of Duty as an example of a game where he empathised with the characters? Seriously. Some games have great storylines; Call of Duty is not one of them.

  • @cornishpastie9 i love that your one of the guys who clearly just hates it for the sake of hating it, the modern warfare games have very emotive and strong storylines..you clearly haven't even played them (i bet you're one of the rapists that enjoys playing the shite that is battlefield, cos they have great storylines, thats sarcasm btw you don't seem like the kind of person who would understand that). also most cornish pasties are disgusting. x

  • @gilesey11

Angry much? I have played all of the CoD games. I enjoy them. But not for their storylines. I do enjoy Battlefield too; again, not for the storyline. So do tell, what's so great about the Call of Duty storylines? Because to me they seem about as good as propaganda films from the 50s.

Also, you call me a rapist for liking Battlefield? You have issues.

  • @cornishpastie9 lol well technically if you were to interview the majority of rapists you would understand my point. perhaps personal issues are something you indeed should be checking out, i suggest a therapist. and don't even pretend you were around in the 50's for their propaganda films or that you have even seen many of them, you are clearly just throwing any idea out to sound clever, it's obvious. i mean really, do you even understand the term propaganda? x

  • @gilesey11

Interesting how you're trying to come across as so superior, and not directly addressing anything I say. Maybe I should do the same. I mean really, do you even understand the term 'technically'?

  • @cornishpastie9 i love how stuck up you are. i mean honestly, how upper class do you want to pretend to be? i understand the term technically, and i understand that you are frightened by what i write and how correct it all is. i love you. x

  • @gilesey11

I was doing that as a parody of you. Pay attention, hypocrite. Yes, I know what a propaganda film looks like, I've had history lessons. No, I'm not just throwing out any old idea to sound clever; have you noticed in CoD that the bad guys are always Russian? And yes, I understand the term propaganda. Grow up, troll.

  • @cornishpastie9 i love how quickly you gave up on your previous comment and just couldn't bare to leave any of my comments unreplied, so you immediately went back and replied to it all with your 'intelligence and humour'. and always russian? always? always? that's so incredibly untrue its unbelievable. i'm assuming you didn't bother playing CoD:World at War, where the bad guys were german and japanese due to WW2? or did you skip that one? grow up! lovezzzzz bruv x

  • @gilesey11

You found it humorous? Weird. Well, sorry for exaggerating. Shall I speak in purely literal terms from now on? And in World at War the Russian characters shot prisoners, or set them on fire. Whereas the American characters were all great and heroic, of course. Acting overly friendly towards strangers is hilarious! You have SUCH an original sense of humour!

  • @cornishpastie9 i'm not trying to be hilarious, i think you are too mentally impaired to find humour a logical route through life. and to be fair the russians were gods in world at war so you could just shut up and play it again. who cares if they shot people or set them on fire, its realistic! it happens. get over it. p.s you are clearly a racist bastard, i'm not american but really? how old are you? 10? and still, cornish pasties? cornwall...hmm inbred. x

  • @gilesey11

What? Are you even reading what I type? When did I say you were trying to be hilarious? You're too busy coming up with snide remarks to even read. Yes, and it happened when the Americans did it too. Sorry, but how is it racist to question the idea that Americans are better people than everyone else? And since when is American a race? Ooh, good work, nice hypocrisy there. Insult me for insulting America then claim everyone in Cornwall is inbred. I'm not from Cornwall.

  • @cornishpastie9 you attempted to take the piss out of my 'sense of humour' which implies that i was trying to be funny, honestly how can you even hope to argue when you are thick as shit and cannot be any older then 16. and its still racism you stupid prick, if i say i hate the welsh because they all shag sheep then i am racist against the welsh, (obviously i dont believe that, its just an example) therefore they dont need to be a race, you are still being racist, you need to grow up. x

  • @gilesey11

No, you acted like I was trying to be funny, I said I wasn't. Can't you follow a simple conversation? Honestly, how can you honestly be honest, honestly? Honest. Yeah, there are no clever sixteen-year-olds out there, I'm sure. That's not racism, it's xenophobia. And I don't hate the Americans. I just don't think they're better than everyone else. That's the opposite of racism.

  • @cornishpastie9 Could you be quiet please? You're making gilesey11 type words, and every word he types drives a knife deeper into my neck. It's obvious you're more intelligent, but not to him. He assumes that you assume he isn't faltered by anything you say because his comments state how much he loves you, it's common for people over the internet to pretend to be enjoying the argument in order to seem like a troll, he's not a troll, just someone with less brain cells than a cornish pastie.

  • @Brutalizur

Yeah, I know it's pointless arguing with him. I just enjoy arguments, I guess. :P

  • @cornishpastie9 I enjoy arguments also, only over the internet and especially on YouTube, people on YouTube are generally less intelligent than your usual human being, the prime example being gilesey11. I feel like such an idiot for arguing with people like him but it makes me feel so superior when they're unable to but trying so hard to retaliate.

Seeing as we both like arguing maybe we should argue with each other? Hey, you're potentially homosexual, unattractive & I like CoD 4! Take that!

  • @Brutalizur

U BASTERD *unsavoury assertions with regards to your mother*

  • @cornishpastie9 You spelt "Basturd" wrong, I must be intellectually superior and my penis is now bigger. Also you must be 12 because I am not.

I bet you're all fat and smelly and your dad makes love to you and you don't like biscuits. Back at me, my insult is now diamonds.

  • @Brutalizur

Yes well, you clearly have a mental illness of some sort because you are expressing opinions that contradict my own on the internet. Also something about Charlie Sheen.

  • @Brutalizur "And I bet you don't like biscuits" HAHAHAHAH Your awesome!

  • @Brutalizur hahahaha amazing

  • @Brutalizur You call him 12... and then insult his appearance, weight, parentage... Wow, you're cool.

  • @TheRealBarnez I was clearly parodying the usual type of insult you find of YouTube. Read my other comments.

  • @Brutalizur :I think by the end you were both taking the piss :P

  • @Brutalizur On a side note, his hatred of biscuits makes your rubbish insult acceptable.

  • @cornishpastie9 and honestly fucking hell, change your name, no-one can take you seriously, cornish pastie. lol you're a fucking troll. x (i wanna have sex with you. ) x

  • @gilesey11

Trolls go out of their way to be as annoying as possible. I think what you put in the brackets there pretty much points to you being the troll in this case.

  • @cornishpastie9

He's talking about Callof Cuty 4 which was a great game

  • @JesterUK2

But the storyline was terrible. All of the characters were generic soldiers without personalities. The dialogue consisted of 'Take cover!' shouted a few times. No aspect of the storyline was good, even if the game was fun to play.

  • @cornishpastie9

Well, I enjoyed it. The writing is no Dune, I agree. But I enjoyed the story and liked my squadmates.

  • @cornishpastie9

    *duty

  • yay, american idiot playtime ^__^

  • god that dickweed talking about cod4 and call of juarez pissed me off, he gets a story presented to him and harasses it for its actual roleplay.

  • @manhunt0r ah yes. Cod4. The fish simulation.

  • you know 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand is one of the only games on this show (except for the old shambolic ZX Spectrum crap) that was actually mad in the UK.... bloody hell

  • @255ad the other being GTA so apparently we brits like taking on the roles of unsympathetic arse holes then run around killing people for and steeling things for no reason well thats emotional repression for you

  • Oh Ladder-Goat, you're so random.

  • most of the fun in games like GTA is running over and generally just killing people

  • LMAO @ 9:30

  • A lot of writers have stopped reading books... They are just watching films ...

  • That guy is full of bullshit.

He says Vice City has a bad story, then praises L4D for its narrative? What the hell...left 4 dead doesn't even give the slightest notice to story.

  • @tehsprite Lol. When he was talking about Vice City's bad story and games in general not being deep because they're not inspired by books, my brother said "play Final Fantasy you prick."

  • @tehsprite He did NOT praise L4D for its narrative. He praised it for its immersion and environments, which are done very well. While Vice City was the only GTA I missed, it probably has a shitty story. I haven't played a single Rockstar game with a good story (even Red Dead Redemption, my favorite game this year, or Max Payne, which has great immersion, too).

  • @samsafisher Probably the Rockstar game with the best storyline was Bully, which even then wasn't fantastic. Enjoyable game regardless, and the narrative was considerably stronger than GTA or RDR, even if the ending was a bit rubbish.

  • YOU WANT A GOOD STORY LINE PLAY THE MGS SERIES!

  • Comment removed

  • naebdys gonny get this far fuck it lol

  • Grand theft auto does bother having people jump out the way, its just not every body has spider sence and can see a car coming at them from behind at 70mph.

  • @woooody316 lol don't take it personally

  • @woooody316 it's still a terrible game regardless.

  • "Before long, 50 and his friends do indeed role"

    Best line ever

  • Anyone noticed the same Beethoven movement seems to appear in all the Wipe shows?

  • massive props for having all your base in there ^_^

  • The 50 Cent review is glorious. Not only is it honestly one of the funniest bits of telly ever, it's also absolutely epic the way that Brooker verbally rips that arsehole to pieces.

When he taunts him about enjoying being sodamized... OMG!! LMFAO!!

And trying to make him snag his balls on the edge of a table. XD

  • @97channel read his column in the guardian 2 weeks ago he rips him to shreds

  • @97channel He went further. Type in "Brooker comment is free" into google, and in the list of articles you should see his entire article relating the Libya situation to 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand.

  • Who thought it was a good idea to make a 50 Cent game anyway? It would only appeal to, as Charlie Brooker said "adolescent toss rags." lol.

  • Since when did captain price die in cod?

  • @Kick17 Since that time when he died...at the end of cod.

  • @Kick17 The one in the sequel is his evil clone.

  • @Kick17 This show aired before the evil clone came back for his revenge

  • The guy at the beginning going on about how bad game's stories are clearly doesn't know what he's talking about. Play Dragon Age: Origins, then you'll know how amazing the stories and characters in games can be.

Basing your knowledge of stories in games on stuff like GTA is just plain unfair.

  • @Superfreak937

he's speaking generally about the mass market. Obviously their are lots of exceptions, you're not clever for noticing them like you think you are.

  • @mrjoecool Oh wow you called me stupid, very original.

I never claimed to be clever, baseless assumptions and needlessly hostile replies do to not make you look intimidating. Please grow up.

  • @mrjoecool What part of me pointing out a game with a good story was supposed to make me look intelligent anyway? How was that observation clearly me saying "oh look how smart I am for being able to name one of the many many games out there with a good story" and why did it warrant a response calling me dumb big headed?

  • @Superfreak937

calm down man, was just a throwaway comment, don't loose sleep over it. The way you came across was like one of those pretentious gamers you get who show off about knowing a whole bunch of games. Clearly you're not, but you do need to calm down. Also, i didn't call you an idiot.

And I have no desire to "look intimidating". I'm just commenting on youtube.

  • @mrjoecool You randomly attack me making comments about my intelligence and assuming I think I'm smart for no good reason other than to try and piss me off and when I point out all the different ways your comment is either dumb or needlessly hostile you tell me to "calm down bro"

    Ugh...

  • @Superfreak937

HEY! i said man, not bro. that is a misquote
