this is an awesome game. i found the mechanics hard to understand at first (especially because im afraid because of the way it looks, you do expect it to be just like Tempest) but once you 'get' it - its amazing. We need more games like this - uncompromisingly made to the creator's vision, and not diluted by mainstream concerns.
wtf?! scary and it shouldn't be called giraffe. o yeah and u should hear the story of giraffe giraffe!! it's a great story so if u care at all and u want me to tell it then write to me or comment. :)
wow, i cant wait for this. my 360 has its slot open and waiting. i`m praying this comes out, i was so sad when that game minter was doing for the gamecube seemed to be shelved. it kind of reminds me of hellgate on my old c64
Awesome, Jeff... simply awesome. I fear the day when my Atari Jaguar (whose cart slot might as well have T2K welded into it) finally shuffles off its silicon mortal coil. But Space Giraffe looks like it might (almost) finally put the Jag into retirement.
I'm going off to rip my T2K soundtrack CD onto my 360 in preparation for the Giraffe's XBLA arrival!
A Tempest rip-off, an ancient grunting animal soundbyte, and music that will quickly wear down the replay value. The player keeps rolling right over the enemies instead of dying, so the challenge is obviously traded off for the fact that you can't see what's going on because of the messy backgrounds.
Bmud - It's not a rip off, it's a sequel to Tempest 2K& T3K
The music you choose to listen to whilst playing is up to you. You can only bull enemies off the rim when your power-zone is maxed out, which you do by dealing electric death - (one of many ace new gameplay innovations) and the 'messy' background are utterly fantastic! As for lack of challenge - Come back and post after you've beaten all 100 levels! And then consider that it's a mere 400 points!! - Charade you Are Bmud! =p
Feels like the planets are all aligned... Minter on a decent platform people actually own already - Fusing all the best bits from his lifetime's back catalogue of original masterworks with the best lightplayer ever - This can only be the greatest shooter of all time!
A Hero is you Yak! I simply can't wait! I'm off to freeze myself Cartman stylee ;)
Keep posting fragments and teases! I love watching the creative process.
I used to tend to have a screen-grabber running when I was working on art, and would let friends watch over my e-shoulder as a scribbly sketch became a solid, finished piece of art; I look forwards to seeing the "Space Giraffe" evolve from something that just started keeping score a week ago into a lovingly-polished piece of diginarcotics.
Awesome. I have been a huge Jeff Minter fan since Atari ST. Absolutely loved Tempest 2000. I can't wait to get my hands on this. Screw you guys who can't appreciate beauty and simplicity in gaming. We don't need you.
Keep up the good work Jeff, I watched that video like 5 times, and felt rather dizzy (in a good way)
Minter should be applauded for creating the beautiful visuals. The real challenge is in coding tight, compelling gameplay that is closer to the later levels in the original Atari Tempest in terms of a skill reflex driven experience. It has to play alot better than Tempest 2000.
Looking forward to your next version. I really hope your gameplay code starts with a fresh approach from a clean slate since a rehash of Tempest 2000 won't be compelling.
Jeff, what song is that you're listening to in the background?! xD
It's looking good though. Don't trim the mentality down too much, or at least add a mentality slider that would let you adjust the amount of neon flying around the screen. :) Those that like the insanity of it can ramp it right up, while those that can't see shit can slide it down.
that's looking like it'll be one hell of a game once it's finished, either way.
Watched it and it inspired me to run through Tempest 2000 again.
This game is going to be awesome and I can't wait to play it! I will say the video is easier to watch on a CRT oppose to my iMacs LCD for whatever reason.
Tempest 3000 was very playable and an awesome (a'bit harder) sequel to Tempest 2000.
I want a Space Giraffe to abduct me, that is all. =)
And you base this prediction on what? Remember Tempest 3000 on the Nuon? That took the perfection of Tempest 2000 and buried it under so many visual effects that it was practically unplayable. From the looks of this video, Yak hasn't learned anything from the failure of T3K.
Tempest 3000 played just fine, clean and sober or intoxicated on your poison of choice. T3K wasn't a failure, the NUON platform was. Kind of hard to sell a million copies when you have a user base of maybe 50,000. BTW, have you ever even seen a NUON-enabled DVD player, much less play one?
Well, that's because there *isn't* that much in there yet; as I mentioned in the video the actual stuff happening is really simple. It's more of a demo of how the game will fit inside Neon.
this looks pretty bad ass

Indeed, way too much effects overload.
I see little or no sync with the music... so what's the point of using Neon ?
Where is the gorgeousness that Unity let us glimpse ?!?
You can do better than this.
radarrider 5 years ago
1: Didn't you hear me say, right in the video, that I'll be trimming the thing so it doesn't overload? Jeez!
2: The reason the music isn't synced is because it isn't what's going through Neon, just what I was listening to on iTunes at the time.
Jeez, people, this is a WIP glimpse only, so please keep your "could do better" comments until it's finished, or I won't show any more!
stinkyox 5 years ago
I think it looks very promising. Keep showing us more videos, I desperately need this game - it's been so long since I played Tempest.
deanopain 5 years ago
Yes I did hear it, I just wanted to get your attention.
:)
WIP : Indeed. If you only want praise don't post
this kind of stuff without a proper warning beforehand.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure this will turn out as a very pretty decent game T3K style ,it's just that I was expecting to see Unity.
radarrider 5 years ago
I think the music was from a CD player- I don't think it was directly connected via Neon.
