  • A complex composition with jazz tinglings and unusual time signature.

Too bad he didn't write it sooner, for it would now appear on all Cream compilations and be enjoyed by many more music lovers.

  • Jimmy Page where?

  • Love this!

  • Ehhhhh. Not for me.

  • Why is Jimmy Page mentioned in this performance?

  • Now known as the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland,i wonder if Jack would approve of that?

  • Theres a New Verison of the dvd coming out inc a NEW Jack interview

  • I did not know he grew some facial hairs, but I guess he is a rock and roll star.

He probibly tried a marijaunna cigerett and got to lazy to shave.

  • @full9throttle2weird a marijaunna cigerett? i havent heard a joint called that in a long time:) but yeah he was high in those days

  • from 1 of my top ten all time albums & probably the best track on that album

  • @shemanic1

the only album I have bought twice, I wore the vinyl out and bought it on CD

  • One of my favorite songs Jack wrote after Cream, on his songs for a Tailor Album. I was dissappointed Cream Broke up after a few years but Grabbed everything Jack wrote, just had the same Energy but Jack was responsible now, which I formed a likable style.

  • Bruce is clearly in the groove, so obviously feeling it, his vocals are so strong, tuneful -- damn, it's always great to witness self-assured artistry of quality, the emotional power is a turn-on all by itself - go Bruce

  • while it is Chris Spedding on guitar in this video - and Chris electric guitar on the rest of Songs for a Tailor - it is indeed George Harrison who plays guitar on this song on this album. In the original liner notes from the vinyl I still own all these decades later - he is credited as Angelo Mysterioso - the same name he used on Cream's track - Badge, due to contractual record label issues. BTW - unbelievable video and incredible performance by all. JB is, of course, extraordinary.

  • Art Themen (saxophonist about 2:21) did keyhole surgery on my knee! When I went for a consultation in Reading the first thing that I asked was " are you THE Art Themen??" Of course it was and he seemed genuinely surprised that I knew of him. We talked of the sessions and virtually nothing else. Anyway, the surgery went well but it was Kind of Blue for a day or two.

  • @jomorley he's a consultant (by wiki) :-)

  • I'm a newly converted Jack Bruce fan. I've always loved his voice and his Cream tracks. Just been getting into 'Songs for a Tailor' - absolutely amazing. What variety and guts! Jack's one of the greatest singers ever and an extraordinary musician over all. I love this track particularly - brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!

  • I could watch this forever. . .

  • This was on a sampler album I bought way back in the late 80's or early 70's Can't remember the name of the sample album though. Any Ideas my shiny diamonds?

  • It was called "Supergroups vol2" on Polydor. Other tracks were by Taste, Ginger Bakers Airforce, Lifetime etc

  • @brightwhite1

Thank you for that brightwhite1. It brought back a rush of memories looking at the Album cover and the track list

  • George Harrsion plays guitar on this song.He is credited as the guitar player on this song.

  • If the royal academy doesn't approve of this song they can kiss my ass.

  • He looks so 70s here, compared to his 60s Cream image!!!

  • songs for a tailor really was a great album this being one of the best songs on it. although he is overshadowed by clapton jack really did have some fine moments in his solo career

  • Jack is sexy ,strong-willed , witty and a ridiculously-naturally-talented musician . aaahh wish he was younger - i'd snap him up !! Happy Birthday John Symon Asher Bruce - lang may yer lum reek ! Janie xxxxx

  • kudos to all women who dig jack bruce

  • from a gretat album a great twistin'blues

  • It's Chris Spedding on guitar.

  • I think it's George because he played guitar on this song on the album. the guitar track sounds the same, possibly overdubbed or he's not on camera for contractual

    reasons

  • Yes, it depends whether this is a live performance.

Mr Spedding comes into view @ 1:10 with those cool specs on.

Would really like to get a DVD of the complete documentary.

  • I stand corrected, was wondering who that was.I'd like to get the whole thing too,i love Jack Bruce

  • Didn't Chris Spedding have only three fingers... or something like that? Hence his playing style?

I really appreciated Bruce's career and the people he played with after Cream.

Escalaotor Over the Hill was good too. Out of the Storm was my personal fav.

  • I think "L'Angelo Mysterioso" is on guitar

  • Not here...this is Chris Spedding...on the Album yes

  • On the liner notes, it's Chris Spedding....

  • So nice to see this.

    A lost classic,

    for lovers of the lost.

  • jack is a scotsman and a taurus. he has a hard mouth. notice he never stays anywhere too long. as great as zep was musically they could not hold jacks jock, except commercially

  • The best rock'pop'soul in the world. Jack is a master

  • Great song!

  • Jack is superb but he was never asked to join Led Zeppelin. The bassplayer was the first one to be selected, John Paul Jones. Jimmy and Jack come from different backgrounds: one from the floor and one from sessions.

  • Actually, John Entwistle and Keith Moon of the Who were first asked to join Zep before JPJ.

  • You´re right. Moon and Entwistle felt limited within the Who and talked with Page but that was never a serious matter. JPJ was Jimmy´s first choice and he had to get rid of Chris Dreja to get him.

  • Jimmy Page's playing is what is marginal. Bruce was more of an artist than Page could ever hope to be.

  • Buy a ticket? Jimmy asked him to join Led Zeppelin!! Bruce turned him down. He had better things to do.

  • And he has been kicking himself ever since.

  • Not hardly. He has no regrets over it. I think he's nuts, but he seems not to care.

  • I don't understand his bitter words of late.

  • Can't help you w/that one.

  • Wow!! Gonna make this a favourite immediately. Didn´t know there existed footage of this - thanks for posting.

  • itz from ROPE LADDER to the MOON.....I swear Im gonna upload it for you all SOON !

  • omg!! please do it ;) that would be so greeat!!:)

  • Some real music for us. Thanks, this is brilliant.

  • That was real. What a great arrangement too!

    I'm lovin' it!

  • It's definitely Chris Spedding on guitar, Henry Lowther and Harry Beckett, trumpets, Dick Heckstall-Smith and Art Themen saxes.

  • where did you get the documentary roppe ladder to the moon, i want it!! i lov this man

  • Lets see, I saw Cream Oct.24th'05, seen Mountain three times, seen Gov't Mule sixteen times, I've driven front-engine dragsters, driven and set land-speed records, had sex three times (and two of those times I wasn't alone), been kissed by Mary(Queen of S.C.O.T.S.). Hell, if I could just play with Jack Bruce one time my life would be complete.

  • omg the bass sounds so powerful and his voice too i like this song,oh i lov jack

  • Fantastic, this is music at it's best. Saw Jack about this period, with my mate Gray, in Coventry, Jan 1970.

  • is rick lee on drums?

  • That's Jon Hiseman, I believe.

  • thanks to you and youtube, i have this in my favorites side-by-side with ellen mcilwaine's version. perfect.

  • jack rules

  • Discovered the "Songs For a Tailor" album last year!! This song and "Ministry of Bag" are my faves!! Great horn work!!

  • i simply love this man....everything i ever wanted !

  • i matbe biased being Scottish but I think that Jack Bruce is one of the all time under-rated musicians. This is an amazing trach with the fantastic brass arrangement and his wonderful voice. Thankyou chrismans for posting this

  • no he definately is under rated

  • he is musical magician, not revered as he should be :)

  • definitely, agreed. I've been listening to JB since the 60's - wore out the Harmony Row LB listening to it and maybe 1 out of a dozen friends got it back then. Oh well nice to know others out there appreciate his music

  • i agree....Songs for a Tailor / Harmony Row / Out of the Storm ....all masterpieces..he is without doubt MY fave musician. People should LISTEN more..his music's more complex than yer normal pop stuff so i suppose thatz why the public dont give him a chance . Pity . They dont know WHAT they are missin'....

  • Chrismans, thanks for posting this gem! Better than the record they're wailing. What a kickoff for 'Tailor'! Don't forget P. Brown: They say there are men who are blue like me in the stars!

  • impresionante tema suena igual que en el disco en estudio gran voz los arreglos muy buenos gran emocion gracias JACK POR TU MUSICA

  • Amazing live version!

  • NO musician grabs me and moves me the way JACK does! one of the rare few whose natural talent was enhanced by their passion and sheer love for music.

plus ...I could just EAT him up....mmmmm

  • Only once I've done with him (never!) ;-)

  • YOu have good taste...but itz MY taste buds that CRAVE him ~ anyway ive got DIBS (nanananana)

    hi "clemdane"

dont mind me ~ i am SO full-of-shit...pleased to meet you-i DIG ur taste in music!

  • I know, just teasing you. We can share. You have good taste, too!

  • a grate jazz rock tune and those bouncing bass lines are the best, there is no bigest fan of jack bruce were all the bigest fan

  • de todas,,,,well,,,,,,,,si!

  • jack bruce é o maior músico de rock de todos os tempos, valeu!!!

  • I still have the "songs for a tailor" lp!

On the original recording, there is a great stinging guitar solo by George Harrison in the instrumental break...

This is not the same version ass on the record, but it rocks!

I love the ominous rumbling intro!

  • hate to disagree with another Jb fan, but there is NO stinging Harrison solo on the SFAT version. Harrison is on it, but definitely no solo. And, in fact, the version of SFAT is exactly this arrangement with exactly these players - the exception being Chris Spedding, taking Harrison's place on the record.

  • Your right! I am wrong! Harrison is just rythmn guitar appeariing as Angelo Mysterioso.....

  • still great after 35+years!

  • Of course they were good players, they were jazzers.

Ian Carr, Dick Heckstall-Smith et al

  • Jack Bruce! Those horns are awesome - and the basswork....I love and don't have this yet, I'm going to run by the store and see if they have a copy of this shit man. All I have is the one with the dog & sports car on the cover - the song - statues, is my favorite cut on that one.

  • search for "Songs for a taylor"...1969, the music is pretty funky & good

  • the JACK bruce BIG band ,jazz ,r&b blues ,rock.what a MAJOR TALENT.I saw him in the cream days and he floored me ,[being a Drummer]and to play the bass , AND sing like he did-"HES" got my blessing , prayers and best WISHES.G.B.-JACK BRUCE!!

  • AH....WELL,,,poor Jack is loved by SOMEBODY....yeah????

  • Good luck finding any modern rock stars who can create anything like this!! Jack rocks!!

  • I really like this song. If I remember correctly, it's the first tune on the double lp "jack bruce" collection that was released by polydor (there was, I believe a double album for each of the three cream members "solo", and a Cream "best of). My dad had the Clapton edition and I wound up buying the Bruce edition being a bass player and all. The 2-lp was basically his first 3 solo lp's with a few songs left aside. Maybe I'll try to find it in my attic...Thanks!

  • Can somebody please gift wrap Jack & his EB-3 ,and send them to me ?(wink)!!!! He's just SO yummy here ......

  • Jack Bruce! King of Bass and Vocals!!!

  • Wow! Thanks!

  • First heard this on an album that changed my life (musically) called 'Bombers'.

A double album compilation by Polydor that introduced me to- Stone the Crows, Taste, Ginger Bakers Airforce, Richie Havens, Derek & The Dominos, Tony Williams Lifetime among others. If you stumble across it in a second hand record shop, snap it up.

  • This is pure unadulterated brilliance! Thanks so much for posting this - it made my week!

  • Great ability-especially during the "ride out" (last 20 seconds at the end) where Jack is singing a lead vocal while soloing on bass. (trills, bends, pull-offs, etc.)I like the EB-3 the way HE masters it; vs all his other choice of instruments, put together.

  • DITTO "Mike" ..The Warwick he plays now is too smooth & professional....I loved him playing the rougher rawer EB-3 .... it just SO matched JACK (fiery/ intense). Quite some team!!!

  • JANIE!!!!! I dunno, the think the Warwick matches his "mellower" style these days. He doesn't play with the same ferousity he did in the Cream days. I wish he did. It was great (not that he isn't the best today).

  • hey you - how r u ??

i wish he did too....& i wish he still looked like this (wink)!

his basses = young Jack playing the EB3 grabbed me like hell.Made me listen.Awesome.World-class.unique.

If i'd heard "older" Jack on the Warwick FIRST-I wouldve liked it,but it wouldnt have made me stand up and listen....

the raw passion of youth is a powerful thing,eh?!

  • It is with the great colosseum-lineup, right?

  • Yeah, I believe I see most of Colosseum in this video. I can definitely identify Jon Hiseman and Dick Heckstall-Smith here.

  • Yeah and Clem Clempson on guitar and, Im not sure, Dave Greenslade on keyb.

  • It problably is Clemson on guitar , but the studio version credits L'angelo Mysteriouso which was George Harrison's nongratus name to avoid contract infringement problems. Check out "Badge" on "Goodbye Cream" or one of the repackages, Harrison is using this name there as well.

  • On guitar here is Chris Spedding, who played on all the other tracks from the album, Songs For a Tailor, and from harmony Row too...

Though George did play Rhythm on this track, on the LP.

  • chrismans, I think you are my hero of the year for these great JB posts. Thanks so much! Unlike Brunk, I never got to see the documentary, but I too would love to know how to get a copy. Again, thanks for making so many smiles and grins amongst the Brucaholics

  • omg, this is MY MAN!! I am so infatuated by Jack Bruce and his music....bloody brilliant mix of trumpet/sax/Jack's throbbin'bass/Jack's MAGIC voice - DEFINITELY my favourite "Solo" Jack song! Janie XXXX

  • hi janie glad your liking the vids, more than happy to share with people with fanatstic taste in music, chris

  • What is it with these incredibly creative British bass players from the 60's? Bruce, Entwistle, Squire, McCartney, Cornick, Lane. I'm a guitar player and love Clapton, but Cream wouldn't have been anything if it weren't for Jack.

  • cream was one of the few bands that couldnt exist any other way, the beatles could have gotten rid of ringo cause paul had to record most of the drums any way, and jimi hendrix was good both with the experience and with the gypsys, cream needed bruce, claptons guitar, and bakers polyrhythmic druming to exist

  • Interesting. I wonder just how to classify Bruce? Hard to believe this is the same ethereal guy who crooned "we're going around" with Cream.

  • Jack classifies himself as........... me , Jack !!

Whatever he does , he does it with more friggin' PASSION and GUTS and TALENT than anyone else.......that why "Janie Loves Jack" !!!

  • Interesting to see his blues roots. Nice to see another side of Jack Bruce.

  • chrismans, another great Jack Bruce clip! I have heard that the "Rope Ladder to the Moon" documentary has been unavailable for many many years. Do you have any information on how I could obtain it.

    Thanks once again, Brunk
