windows 7 uses to many resources just so it looks cool, I want a work platform not something to play solitary on xp is a work platform log on do your work then log off simple straight to the point we have enough distraction with smartphones and playing angry birds not that it's a bad thing but their is a time and place. windows 7 is a playtoy and nothing more if your working why do you need all the graphical it used to be simple to change your stuff on xp fast now you go though 4 steps to do it
I work for a living windows seven is for people who don't I like windows xp because it runs smooth
I like change but not when it is 7 steps back. we tried this years back when 98me came out it was to much for the processors of the day. my honest opinion is to make a update for xp (that you have to buy on cd or digital download) that brings xp to support the new hardware. for example ram more than 2 gb 32 at least, hardrives 8 tb at least, and processors all the new processors. next post
I have both Windows7 and OSX....I try to avoid using Windows7 at all cost...There is no comparison....Windows will never be able to compete with a Unix based system. WIndows 7 gives me more issues on My MacBook Pro than xp dose. as far as Windows is concerned XP is still the big winner even with the lack of modern hardware support. XP runs faster on My Mac using only 2 gigs of ram wile windows 7 is still a dog on 4 gigs. it scores a 5.9 index and is still slow. Windows 7 is very nice looking. has a nice interface it has a warm feel to it i like it. But once i start using it and get into it is just bad. OS X all the way baby!

Long time XP user. First up, I don't really like the new start menu. I'm just not sure it's well designed, and it's a bit hard to find what I need when I haven't used it for months (and/or memorized it). All my geek friend's still running XP.
Gee no wonder this article is true, XP has lost about 10% marketshare this year and Vista lost like 4-5% marketshare. And XP's marketshare keeps dropping every month never have gone back up, if that article is right wouldn't it be going back up anytime soon? BUT ITS BEEN 1 YEAR so this article is BS just like emeek
I tried it, and I didn't like it. All eye candy. And even my organized brother has desktop clutter. XP mode was created most likely because too many like XP best, despite eye candy, and also because XP was better in the first place. But that's just my opinion.
Think ppl keep comparing OS's as they were all iqual. Its like comparing a car to a boat.. They both serve the purpose of transporting, but clearly in difrent ways! I am a gamer and i been using Windows for long time now. I Tryed Linux and it didnt fit what i needed. Think in that terms Microsft still have the OS that trys to serve the most variaty of needs. And thats why they keep selling.
I agree with this video. When I die. Recently convert my Netbook and Desktop (Gaming desktop) from both XP (Home on netbook and Ultimate on Desktop) to WIndows 7 Ultimate on both. Great.
I think a smart person would choose windows 7 if they had XP.... I've used Vista since day one and never once had a problem with it................ EVER! As a matter of fact I found myself having to backup my stuff and reinstall XP after about a year or two. Vista on the other hand hasn't lost it's "Like New" Feeling.
Imo if you have vista with more than 4gb of ram you shouldn't upgrade....
Bottom line here. If you don't understand new technology don't install it on your computer. If you buy a stock computer with W7 you best learn how to use it, it's not that hard.
I just upgraded to Windows 7 and so far it's a smooth ride the few little problems i did have were: the Windows Music Player Toolbar isn't installed Defaultly and it took be about 10 extra seconds to find the Defragmenter lol.
I'm a Vista fan, and since you polily asked our opinion on Windows 7.
I think Windows 7 is a good OS but it just seems like it's not needed in terms of upgrading from Vista. It doesn't really bring that much in terms of new stuff. The biggest thing about Windows 7 is probably the superbar, the rest of the features such as areo snap don't really seem like they will be used as much as MS predicited.
i cant believe you took the time and efort dedicated to a video thats wrong. lol. Emeek, a perfect example of an idiot who believes everything he reads on the internet.
Love W7. Completely satisfied, even using the RC, not release version. No problem with drivers, I have actually yet to even had to download a driver. I threw in a 5 year old tv tuner card, and it was working with MCE in about 30 seconds. About the only problem I've had was getting Ac3 to be properly output through SPDIF, but that's not really a windows problem, that's a hardware/design limitation of spdif on any computer. As far as W7 goes, it's quick and stable.
First off, you an absoulte fagget, although, you probably already know this.
Windows 7, is more like XP, with the Vista look. Windows 7 LOOKS like Vista, and runs like XP. I have tried the beta, I like it alot. In fact, the only reason I wanted Vista was because it looked better than XP.
I'm sorry dude, but it is not serios or professionel to decide for "the others" (in this case the xp users) what will make them happy or not. How will you now that? how can you decide for every xp user, what makes him happy?
It would be much better, if you just talk about facts and so let the user decide, if it will makes him happy or not.
Well here's my opinion. Windows 7 is MUCH better than XP. Why do I say this? I have this old laptop I was going to trash because it ran so slow. It ran XP. I was curious about how well Windows 7 would actually run on older hardware so I installed it. I was amazed. The laptop was faster. But not just fatser. It was MUCH faster and had less problems than it did under XP. This pretty much sold me on Windows 7. I installed it on my graphics workstation and am VERY happy,
Well the problem with Vista is it's hardware req. I mean the real ones not the ones MS initially released for it. You need a relativily hefty system to run Vista with all the bells and whistles turned on. With Wondows 7 this just isn't the case.
Been an avid Win2K user for a up until XP service pack 2 came out and made that OS stable. Skipped Vista because it was a POS and have been running Win7 for some time now.
Its the best OS MS has produced since Win2K in my opinion. Drivers weren't an issue with 99.9% of the devices I dealt with. 1 pc out of 6 had a wireless card that I needed drivers for, which WinUpdate took care of. Infact, it did a Toshiba Satellite (notorious for driver issues with non-image install in any OS )100%
Vista is way better than XP. Yea it uses more resources but it time to upgrade anyway. That driver that plagued vista on it's release has been fixed. I didn't have one problem when installing drivers on My 7 year old Dell, 4 year old Acer, my old Lexmark Printer.
XP Flippin sucks so much I have know idea why people have stuck with it VISTA is way better then XP Windows 7 just kicks XP's ass XP was good back in the day but people need to scrap this OS move to Windows 7 or OSX and erm linux O.o
If I really had a gun to my head to load up something new the xp from microtheft OOOps I'm microsoft.....I would have to switch OS's to a linux system or a free OS or maybe MAC.
wow... fear change? I migrated from Windows XP to Vista 64 bit to Windows 7 64 bit. I only had to reinstall my VMware stuff. Everything else ran fine. I do some freelance modeling using Maya and 3ds max and both ran much faster and were more standle than they ever were under XP. Unless you are running ancient code you won't have any issues.
How much is the Mac to use with it? I can install windows 7 on any decent PC, so its only £50 for me, Mac Leopard thing is 9.95 plus at least £400 for a Mac mini
not to brag i have 7 pcs runing xp,vista and 7 all work really good i use different pcs for different projects and i do get the job done with no problems 7 got it for free wich is more then i can say for osx by the way all of my pcs together cost less then mac book pro i have 3 laptops 4 pcs might even show them on video next time but pc users know what im talking about (windows 7 brothers)
im running on win 7 and trust me win 7 IS BETTER then vista, if u look at the requirements its lower then vista coz windows actual saw the flaws that vista had, and the run box option, ever heard of shortcuts? (windows button + R) i like MAC more then windows but im actually impressed this time, i like my mac more but thats on my macbook and my home pc is vista for games etc but windows 7 is good, yes ive found a few bugs, then again its still a beta, but if u like windows win 7 is great
Well microsoft just announced that windows 7 will have an XP mode, for XP lovers.
Heres my view: Dont get vista if you have a shitty computer! Im running cista home premium 64 bit FLAWLESSLY. Now on the other hand, my brother and aunt both had crappy computers running vista, so I downgraded them to XP, and they are getting better performance.
People dont have to get vista or windows 7 if they dont want to.
Good thing I switched to Mac&Linux. God I hated Vista, even games that I met the requirements of just didn't get past the splash screen, in XP they do.
And would everyone shut up about how great windows 7 is, it's Vista with makeup.
Windows 95 is not better because it doesn't use as much resources as newer OSs. Our logic isn't that if something requires a lot of resources it's bad, our logic is that if it takes 4GB of RAM to do small tasks, it's bad.
well i have had xp for almost 5 years it sucked bad ui/gui, hard to find your stuff, kinda unorganized but then i tried windows 7 it is so easy to find your stuff very organized the ui/gui is really nice
Ive been using windows 7 on an old laptop. It dosent have a good enough graphics card to have the arrow peak. I like the looks and the task bar. The thing that i hate about it is trying to save files in a location, or moving files and folders. The computer interface is bullshit. I use macs too. Leopard is by far better than 7. I just dont like the idea of haveing a company that puts together a mother board, graphics card, drivers, cpu, and all the other stuff made by a diff company. Dosent work!
What the hell? Of course motherboards, video cards, and processors are made by different companies. They are perfectly compatible with each other. I am using an ASUS motherboard with an AMD processor, EVGA video card, A-Data RAM, Maxtor hard drive, and an Antec power supply. I have had absolutely no issues with stability after switching out two of those components. You sir are an idiot.
Dont get me wrong. I love the idea of being able to put whatever you want into a pc. But for long term performance id trust my self to apple who designs every product or has relationships with intel to make a product for a specific purpose.
he is fucking retarted, i'm using a dimension 3000 built for windows xp and windows 7 recognized my devices easily. i didn't even do anything, as soon as i started my devices started to install. only problem is i can't use aero, your such a stupid mac fan boy...
i think he is Emeek77, a guy who love Apple so much, that Microsoft in his eye is a piece of shit... Apple is the GOD for him. Oh.... He got some technology, he just too biased. I love Windows 7 and i am XP user for long time. I found that Windows 7 is really good, especially i love i don't need install any driver for Windows 7...
Most drivers that do not work with Vista at this point in time are driver's that are made around 2001 and older. Also the problem is due to manufactuars deciding not to suppor them anymore. Windows 7 no doubt will most likely get the popular vote for xp users in that it is more efficient in tasks then XP is and overal is the most stable operating system so far.
Windows 7 just seems to be a photocopy of OS X but with a defective photocopier! Aero? Microsoft spends so much money on R&D and all they seem to do is copy. Before you know it they're going to have features such as Piles instead of Stacks and Areas instead of Spaces! LOL. I challenge any Windows fanboys to argue with me on this.
"Before you know it they're going to have features such as Piles instead of Stacks and Areas instead of Spaces! LOL. I challenge any Windows fanboys to argue with me on this."
and to let you know, if someone is too lazy to go download a driver for a camera they shouldn't be near a god damn computer. If something so basic and simple is "too much work" you should hit yourself in the face with a fucking pick axe.
i think windows 7 will be do good upgrade from vista and might cause people to change from xp. the driver issues are less now. when vista came out in 2006/7 their were heaps of issues but now (s.p. 6) most are fixed. improved graphic interface, making it easier faster more natural and intuitive then xp. a new version of windows will be different and will take getting use to so change should not be avoided.
people will soon have to move to 64 bit. xp is so old now. macs are a whole other issue
Fact: The majority of the human race is averse to sudden change. I know many older people that yearn for the old days of the Commodore 64, Apple 2, etc.
And guess what, the people the article is talking about wouldn't like OSX anymore than they would 7. Maybe you should make a video titled "Why XP Lovers won't like Snow Leopard" or "Why XP Lovers won't like Ubuntu Linux"
Fact: computers don't last forever, applications need more and more power, older hardware components will not be available at one moment in time, more external hardware will not be compatible, more and more applications will not be compatible.
Conclusion: Users will switch over time. Progress can't be halted because of users who wait until their hardware breaks down after 12 years.
This yet another hate video, pure with the intention to piss all Windows users of.
WE WINDOWS USERS SHOULD NOW TAKE MATTERS IN OUR OWN HAND AND REPORT EVERY BASHING VIDEO OF HIS TO YOUTUBE. THIS HAS TO STOP. 2 YEARS OF EMEEK77/APPLESOLDIER PISSING PEOPLE OF IS LONG ENOUGH!!
Emeek has the right to speak his mind you asshat! Report him for making "hate videos" for criticizing Microsoft? Are you kidding? Gonna report all the Macbashing videos too? Doubt it. I'm posting from a Macbook Pro, running Windows Seven. I'm trying your Crap qcziu. Whens the last time you tried Leopard. Oh Yeah, never. Windows Seven is a better than I thought it would be, at least it runs, more or less. If you have four gig of ram. Better than Vista or XP but still last in line.
XP x64 Professional is by far the best. Easy, and fastest, best icons. No DX10 support but still better FPS in games. Unix is overrated, Mac is too. Imo.
hmmm... Windows 7 is already out there, and is getting great reviews. And vista isn't as bad some people are making it out to be. The people complaining about it are the same people who don't know how to use it correctly.
I really have no problem with mac/apple products, I just prefer windows because i'm used to using it. I've been using vista for about a year now, and I haven't encountered any issues with it, and I have to use mine for work all the time. I do all the same stuff I did on XP.
But honestly how many average users can do that, and why should they have to tinker in the internals of their machine just to keep it running smoothly. Besides, it's all too easy to delete background processes corresponding to wifi or other necessary features that results in a crippled PC that then becomes very difficult to fix.
Almost every normal (ie. non-expert) PC user I know ends up with a very slow running PC due to 10-20 icons in their system tray corresponding to all kinds of junk that they've installed over time. This, plus a few extra hidden background processes (like acrotray.exe) are enough to cripple even the fastest PC. This seems to happen to all PCs and as a result they slow down over time, unless the user is computer savvy enough to go through theregistry and clean out the run key occationally.
I've worked on computers that were slow and once I uninstalled Norton, it ran loads better. Most computers do slow down over time compared to a fresh install, including Macs.
Yes Norton is terrible. Many windows users tell me that viruses are not a problem on windows as long as you run a virus scanner. What they forget to mention is how much these virus scanners will slow your system down over time.
Regarding the registry, the real killer is quick launch applications like acrotray.exe that install themselves in the run key of your registry and load at startup. They then sit in memory and slow the whole system down.
Hmm, I don't agree with this statement regarding Macs. I don't think they slow down at all over time, since they don't accumulate alot of background processes.

I was comparing from a fresh install of OSX to several months later of updates, uninstall and reinstall of software. Now I'm not saying a drastic slow down like to a crawl, but be less snappy as a fresh install.
Hmm I havn't noticed this myself, and I don't know why it would be the case since apps don't install garbage into the system, unlike with windows and the system tray. Are you sure you're not just imagining this?
I know that windows slows down as updates/patches are applied but I've never experienced this on the Mac.
I don't know why it would be the case since apps don't install garbage into the system, unlike with windows and the system tray.
The icons in the bottom right are notifications icons and quick access to applications settings or even can quickly open the app from it. No, it does not slow your system down. I will say certain services at startup can slow your system down, however this is more of the Programs fault for using more resources much like poorly written drivers can give a BSOD.
Windows 7 seems better than XP, but it's still nothing special. Like Emeek says all the inherent problems of windows are still there like the registry and system tray that are going to slow your system down over time.
all the inherent problems of windows are still there like the registry and system tray that are going to slow your system down over time. -cendrillon1978
I haven't had registry problems in years, it did happen more often back in Win95,98, and Me... System Tray doesn't slow your system down. What will slow your system down is poorly written drivers and software. Norton anti-virus was one big contributor of eating up resources.
Trying 7 out right now. Isn't that much different from Vista. Of course it's still a beta version. I run a lot of other OS's (OSX, Windows, Linux) and 7 looks promising but I'm not completely for it just yet.
The only thing I dont like about Apple is you can only get what they want you to get. For instance, several people were waiting for macworld09 for imac and mac mini revisions(long overdue) and was a noshow. So now you "have a choice", buy outdated now for same price(prob twice the price considering specs by now) or just wait. Kinda "console-ish".
Mac's prices isnt really all that bad if you buy on or near the revision date but buying at the end of it's cycle.... well you be the judge.
To be honest I think if you're a Windows user you'll like Windows 7. It's much snappier and more responsive than Vista. I actually like the transparent start bar, it looks pretty good. Windows 7 mops the floor with Vista. It's still Windows (registry, bloated, system tray and all the other garbage) but it's much better than Vista.
I had so many Macs (and PC's) that I had to get rid of about 50 of them and most of those disposed were Mac's.
I felt bad about doing it but the disposal cost was free.
I did keep 2 original Mac's that I had (2 of the first 6,000) ever sold in January 1984,a Performa 638CD,Power PC 6116CD and a G4 Tower.I did also save an Apple ][ e.
After being a Windows user for more years than most of these M$ users have been alive, I honestly can't see myself ever going back--ever. Unless Windows goes *Nix, completely changes its philosophy, and hires some real artists and visionaries, I'll go Linux all the way before I sink even a Mexican centavo into M$'s products.
I think at the very least they should make W7 a free upgrade to all current Vista users, or to all users whom machines cames with Vista preinstalled. - Bullboykennels
I kind of agree, but it would also be a business nightmare because you would have people coming out of the wood work saying they have Vista installed, when it could be a pirated copy. I think they are planning a free upgrade for people who bought a new PC with Vista installed within a few months of Win 7 release.
So PC users have to hate Apple or they are dumb? Huh. Sounds like the ramblings of an arrogant prick. I use Linux & Windows, and both sides of me wanted to rate you a 1; so I did.
"New paint job". Try a remodeled explorer, 7 is running as fast as XP Pro did for me, running on identical hardware. Go look around, try find examples of Vista installed on netbooks. Now go look at the users who have already got 7 beta onto netbooks and LOVE it.
If you want another glimpse into this angry little man send me a PM. I've got some pretty funny nove-length letters he sent me (and then blocked me from responding).
Hey the Nvidia GTX 285 is out now. Its a bit faster than the GTX 280 while using less power.
...but it wont work under OSX. You can install windows on the Mac though and get to play it - if you have a Mac Pro since the imac and mini are not upgradable.
...Hmmm so one model of a Mac product can use the latest video hardware as long as they dont use OSX. So to get the most performance out of a Mac, it needs to run windows I guess.
You talk as though your comment changes things...Reality is that PC gaming is big. Infact the whole PC gaming industry might be as big as apple. Think of all the gaming cards (video, sound), the boards dedicated to gaming, the games themselves, the advertising..etc.
Your comment basically shows ignorance and a holier than thou attitude.
Whilst PC gaming might be big, it is small relatively speaking. Gaming on a PC has about 10% of games (consoles have 90), and probably only about 10% of that 10% give a damn about framerates, resolutions, aa, etc.
All I'm saying is that the way you guys go on its like if a computer can't play games its automatically junk. We're fed up of your gaming argument, we don't give a shit or we wouldn't have bought the computer.
Yes, it may be small compared to the biggest console games, but the numbers are still huge. If a computer cant game, its not automatically junk, but if for around the same price, it has the capability to game, then thats even better because many of the higher end gaming cards will support CUDA or some other GPU based application acceleration. Programs can do video conversion or do scientific calculations on the GPU. The gaming boxes could do huge amounts of work if someone decided...
You talk as if anyone gives a damn about PC gaming. - niverceritt
Apparently Mac zealots care just as much as gaming on a computer especially Blizzard games. I've seen several Mac users playing Crysis. I mean sure there are less gamers on Mac, but Apple has never taken gaming that seriously. It's sad, you guys are missing out on a lot of fun.
You spin shit so hard and so fast, I'm wondering whether or not you're really a Fox News reporter.
2 points for having the brevity to call windows users uninformed, minus several million for being a fucking hipocrite. 1 star. I'd give negative stars if I could.
lol. U can't say that. apple keep changing like this too. The New Gen of Ipod wires don't suport with the old ones. now i prefer mac and im mac all the way but ur just trolling here..
also vista was suposed to be a "halfway point" between Xp - 7 like windows (i think) milenium was.
we get it. you can draw with your mouse. just give me the link to the article so i don't have to listen to your stupid voice reading. If i want a bedtime story, i'll ask my mom.
I don't give a shit about Windows. Do a video on your new video card. Let's see some mac stuff. you don't need to convince anyone that windows is a piece of shit.
windows 7 uses to many resources just so it looks cool, I want a work platform not something to play solitary on xp is a work platform log on do your work then log off simple straight to the point we have enough distraction with smartphones and playing angry birds not that it's a bad thing but their is a time and place. windows 7 is a playtoy and nothing more if your working why do you need all the graphical it used to be simple to change your stuff on xp fast now you go though 4 steps to do it

Imo if you have vista with more than 4gb of ram you shouldn't upgrade....
archolon 2 years ago
Bottom line here. If you don't understand new technology don't install it on your computer. If you buy a stock computer with W7 you best learn how to use it, it's not that hard.
I just upgraded to Windows 7 and so far it's a smooth ride the few little problems i did have were: the Windows Music Player Toolbar isn't installed Defaultly and it took be about 10 extra seconds to find the Defragmenter lol.
I've used a Mac and a PC. I enjoy them equally.

I like Mac more than Windows. The snow leopard owned Win7. XD
ExczSanityz 2 years ago
I'm a Vista fan, and since you polily asked our opinion on Windows 7.
I think Windows 7 is a good OS but it just seems like it's not needed in terms of upgrading from Vista. It doesn't really bring that much in terms of new stuff. The biggest thing about Windows 7 is probably the superbar, the rest of the features such as areo snap don't really seem like they will be used as much as MS predicited.

Wow, you're like the first vista fan I've ever seen :O
Imo, vista is just a piece of crap, when I work with windows, I always use XP, that's the best windows yet imo.

Please stop talking about stuff that you had no expierence about
Windows 7 DOES NOT use the same driver model!
When i had vista barly any drivers where there, display, sound etc.
BUT, when i log into 7 everything was there and i had nothing to install, EVEN AFTER A CLEAN INSTALL; so there, my point is made.

As far as W7 goes, it's quick and stable.
fidesdefensor 2 years ago
First off, you an absoulte fagget, although, you probably already know this.
Windows 7, is more like XP, with the Vista look. Windows 7 LOOKS like Vista, and runs like XP. I have tried the beta, I like it alot. In fact, the only reason I wanted Vista was because it looked better than XP.
SO there. A current XP user satisfied with Win7.

Xplodz 2 years ago
Well the problem with Vista is it's hardware req. I mean the real ones not the ones MS initially released for it. You need a relativily hefty system to run Vista with all the bells and whistles turned on. With Wondows 7 this just isn't the case.
searcher619 2 years ago
Been an avid Win2K user for a up until XP service pack 2 came out and made that OS stable. Skipped Vista because it was a POS and have been running Win7 for some time now.
Its the best OS MS has produced since Win2K in my opinion. Drivers weren't an issue with 99.9% of the devices I dealt with. 1 pc out of 6 had a wireless card that I needed drivers for, which WinUpdate took care of. Infact, it did a Toshiba Satellite (notorious for driver issues with non-image install in any OS )100%

Windows 95 is not better because it doesn't use as much resources as newer OSs. Our logic isn't that if something requires a lot of resources it's bad, our logic is that if it takes 4GB of RAM to do small tasks, it's bad.

Dosent work!
norman12341234 3 years ago
What the hell? Of course motherboards, video cards, and processors are made by different companies. They are perfectly compatible with each other. I am using an ASUS motherboard with an AMD processor, EVGA video card, A-Data RAM, Maxtor hard drive, and an Antec power supply. I have had absolutely no issues with stability after switching out two of those components. You sir are an idiot.

Most drivers that do not work with Vista at this point in time are driver's that are made around 2001 and older. Also the problem is due to manufactuars deciding not to suppor them anymore. Windows 7 no doubt will most likely get the popular vote for xp users in that it is more efficient in tasks then XP is and overal is the most stable operating system so far.

i think windows 7 will be do good upgrade from vista and might cause people to change from xp. the driver issues are less now. when vista came out in 2006/7 their were heaps of issues but now (s.p. 6) most are fixed. improved graphic interface, making it easier faster more natural and intuitive then xp. a new version of windows will be different and will take getting use to so change should not be avoided.
people will soon have to move to 64 bit. xp is so old now. macs are a whole other issue
unragamuf 3 years ago
Fact: The majority of the human race is averse to sudden change. I know many older people that yearn for the old days of the Commodore 64, Apple 2, etc.
And guess what, the people the article is talking about wouldn't like OSX anymore than they would 7. Maybe you should make a video titled "Why XP Lovers won't like Snow Leopard" or "Why XP Lovers won't like Ubuntu Linux"
jaylil55 3 years ago
Fact: computers don't last forever, applications need more and more power, older hardware components will not be available at one moment in time, more external hardware will not be compatible, more and more applications will not be compatible.
Conclusion: Users will switch over time. Progress can't be halted because of users who wait until their hardware breaks down after 12 years.

But honestly how many average users can do that, and why should they have to tinker in the internals of their machine just to keep it running smoothly. Besides, it's all too easy to delete background processes corresponding to wifi or other necessary features that results in a crippled PC that then becomes very difficult to fix.
cendrillon1978 3 years ago
Almost every normal (ie. non-expert) PC user I know ends up with a very slow running PC due to 10-20 icons in their system tray corresponding to all kinds of junk that they've installed over time. This, plus a few extra hidden background processes (like acrotray.exe) are enough to cripple even the fastest PC. This seems to happen to all PCs and as a result they slow down over time, unless the user is computer savvy enough to go through theregistry and clean out the run key occationally.
cendrillon1978 3 years ago
I've worked on computers that were slow and once I uninstalled Norton, it ran loads better. Most computers do slow down over time compared to a fresh install, including Macs.
blacksteel25 3 years ago 2
Yes Norton is terrible. Many windows users tell me that viruses are not a problem on windows as long as you run a virus scanner. What they forget to mention is how much these virus scanners will slow your system down over time.
Regarding the registry, the real killer is quick launch applications like acrotray.exe that install themselves in the run key of your registry and load at startup. They then sit in memory and slow the whole system down.
cendrillon1978 3 years ago
Hmm, I don't agree with this statement regarding Macs. I don't think they slow down at all over time, since they don't accumulate alot of background processes.
cendrillon1978 3 years ago
Hmm, I don't agree with this statement regarding Macs. I don't think they slow down at all over time, since they don't accumulate alot of background processes. - cendrillon1978
I was comparing from a fresh install of OSX to several months later of updates, uninstall and reinstall of software. Now I'm not saying a drastic slow down like to a crawl, but be less snappy as a fresh install.
blacksteel25 3 years ago
Hmm I havn't noticed this myself, and I don't know why it would be the case since apps don't install garbage into the system, unlike with windows and the system tray. Are you sure you're not just imagining this?
I know that windows slows down as updates/patches are applied but I've never experienced this on the Mac.
cendrillon1978 3 years ago
I don't know why it would be the case since apps don't install garbage into the system, unlike with windows and the system tray.
The icons in the bottom right are notifications icons and quick access to applications settings or even can quickly open the app from it. No, it does not slow your system down. I will say certain services at startup can slow your system down, however this is more of the Programs fault for using more resources much like poorly written drivers can give a BSOD.
blacksteel25 3 years ago
Windows 7 seems better than XP, but it's still nothing special. Like Emeek says all the inherent problems of windows are still there like the registry and system tray that are going to slow your system down over time.
cendrillon1978 3 years ago
all the inherent problems of windows are still there like the registry and system tray that are going to slow your system down over time. -cendrillon1978
I haven't had registry problems in years, it did happen more often back in Win95,98, and Me... System Tray doesn't slow your system down. What will slow your system down is poorly written drivers and software. Norton anti-virus was one big contributor of eating up resources.

I kind of agree, but it would also be a business nightmare because you would have people coming out of the wood work saying they have Vista installed, when it could be a pirated copy. I think they are planning a free upgrade for people who bought a new PC with Vista installed within a few months of Win 7 release.

So to get the most performance out of a Mac, it needs to run windows I guess.
...may I recommend Windows 7 :)

You talk as if anyone gives a damn about PC gaming.
niveceritt 3 years ago
You talk as though your comment changes things...Reality is that PC gaming is big. Infact the whole PC gaming industry might be as big as apple. Think of all the gaming cards (video, sound), the boards dedicated to gaming, the games themselves, the advertising..etc.
Your comment basically shows ignorance and a holier than thou attitude.

It's true, sorry for my attitude but it is.
We're fed up of your gaming argument, we don't give a shit or we wouldn't have bought the computer.
niveceritt 3 years ago
Yes, it may be small compared to the biggest console games, but the numbers are still huge. If a computer cant game, its not automatically junk, but if for around the same price, it has the capability to game, then thats even better because many of the higher end gaming cards will support CUDA or some other GPU based application acceleration. Programs can do video conversion or do scientific calculations on the GPU. The gaming boxes could do huge amounts of work if someone decided...

If Apple does things right then why are their Apple displays so expensive yet so shitty?
I give you 1 star.

I don't give a shit about Windows. Do a video on your new video card. Let's see some mac stuff. you don't need to convince anyone that windows is a piece of shit.
