I really hate to ask this, but why do all the BASS covers of this song suck?

Haha well for one thing I only played bass for a couple years at the time, in my case!

And the truth is, this song is damned hard to play on a guitar, so obviously it will be even harder on a bass! Hence why most people would mess it up!! ;)

But yeah nowdays fortuantly I'v improved a lot... but I tend to play metalcore stuff like Avenged Sevenfold and All that Remains these days... maybe I'll make a cover video of one of them... we'll have to see...!! ;)

Ain't trying mate, already got it. Got a permanent place to play for 1.5 hours in Oasis in Cheltenham, and get frequent other gigs and stuff. In fact am about to secure another semi-permanent place in gloucester with my goth band.

I basically figured it out by learning the scale of whatever key it was in (forgotten now) and then improvising around the chords. I'm assuming that there are some bass tabs that tell you what chord notes to play out there, right? (I wrote my own...) If you can find them, try playing around with the other related notes in the chord.

By the way, if that makes no sense to you, I could write you the TAB for the Intro. (the bit without words @ start) *Joe*

i'd say most good bass players do have a little enthusiasm. i think it is a good thing and if anyone says  not then screw them. so how did u get the bass to sound like that? did u use peddals?

Thanks a lot man! :) Yeah I used a Danelectro distortion pedal plus a noise-removal pedal (else you can't hear anything but a load of fuzz!) however, the computer's sound card is so crap that it still doesn't sound very good. Will do another recording soon with my new PC, Ill let u know when its done!

They vary a lot. For guitars you could be looking at around £100 for a half-decent pedal-board, but for bass, you shouldn't be spending much more than about £40-£50, as the bass will sound almost the same even with an expensive pedal, unless you use a really expensive and powerful amp (eg for concerts).

The distortion ped I used for this vid cost me £35 second hand. The noise-remover cost about £10 i think...!!

Metallica had a great bassist, and yeah he sounds better than me. However, this video sucks AT LEAST as much because of the crappy mike than because of my playing. If you really wanna judge me I can email u some of my songs I'v written and recorded with the two bands Im currently in.

You need either better speakers, or to change the EQ on them. because its a bass guitar, not an electric, you will need to turn treble down and bass boost on (if u can!)

Distortion pedal, mate! Im like one of the .0001% of bassists who actually use pedals, but if I didn't it would sound crap!

However some people hae suggested it sounds a little too distorted.. so maybe its just as well most people don't use pedals!

Any decent musical instrument shop will sell pedals.

Failing that, you can order them straight to your house online. Try using Ebay, or ordering straight from the manufactureres!

A basic distortion pedal shouldn't cost you any more than £25. A guitar distortion pedal is fine for bass. You can get a better quality one for about £50-£70, but if you are playing bass, you shouldn't need it. You can also get multi-effect pedals, with like 10 different effects on them for about £70 for a "cheap" one, or up to £300 for an expensive one.

No idea how much they are in $ or Euros though sorry!

I got pedals but my amp is all like "fuck that shit, I'm a fucking amp." not realy but it dosent work on my amp. It's not like a small cheap amp or anything, its not like some huge ass thing but its well sized, and very expensive (to me it is anyway)

Yeah in that case its almost definatly the pedal mate. To get a bass to distort properly, u need a good pedal. For the time being though try turning the "gain" setting down on the distortion pedal, if its got one! That often makes it sound clearer!

Yeah I know it sounds aweful! Its coz I had to use to built-in PC amplifier, which has no EQ so I have no control on the sound! :(

Yeah I'v heard tab is pretty easy to pick up, but I guess Im just lazy! Im just really glad iv got some natural talent to be able to "hear" the note changes instead of read them! However, if I were asked to play a song I didn't know, then I'd be stuffed, even if it was simple.
