I know this is 1982. Years back...I like the song. Rick Derringer is underrated. He seems to be well known by a lot of people. Great guitar playing. Sorry to judge his voice, it's good, confident, yet it could use a bit more projection, I don't mean scream, just projection. I shouldn't talk I can't sing, but if he was just a little louder. I was going to mention this in one of his more recent video clips. Other than that, Derringer is underated I think.
Rick needed a "Steve Vai stage fan". He sid that was his single most important piece of gear when onstage,,, it kept him COOL - both feeling and looking as it got his hair blowing around too. :)
Derringer was GREAT and never got the notice he should have. His self titled album "Derringer" is one of my favorites ever, and almost impossible to find! I wonder who he pissed off??? No other way you can explain it, cause it's GREAT MUSIC!!!
So cool to see this after all these years..I was 12 at the time and I woke up the next morning to find that guitar on my couch. (my brother worked for him at the time and was guarding it...except from me hahaha ...while he slept I wailed on it!
I have been SEARCHING for songs of this record on youtube, I played the hell out of that piece of vinyl in 1980... I am going to have to go find it on CD, some really great songs on that record...the version of this song in particular.
Thought I was the only one who bought this album. What was it called ? It had a target with bullet holes in it, and the drummer ended up with Pat Benetar. C'mon throw me a friggin bone somebody!
Jesus, this is fantastic. Great tone. Right into that old Marshall head, and in your face. My guitar teacher turned me on to Rick and Johnny Winter, never forgot those licks. What a smooth rock player. And having a great time.
If you want to hear some really tasty lead guitar work from Derringer, check out the outro solo on "Funky Music", from Johnny Winter's album "Johnny Winter And" (not the live album). It's him & Winter trading guitar licks, but Derringer dominates - has a thicker tone & uses the wah wah pedal a bit. The song is on youtube.
Rick is an original and an influence on other singers and players from before Kiss existed. To me in fact it always sounded like Steve Miller was copying Rick, at least as a singer.
I was at a guitar show in Wilmington, Delaware last year. I went to the back of the hall and there was Rick fooling around with a guitar. I asked him to play me somethign and he said "oh I'm here to sell guitars" but then went into R+R Hootchie Koo, Frankenstein, and the intro to Free Ride. I have it recorded somewhere. I and about four other people standing face to face watching this great player bang out his million sellers. One of those moments in life, ya know?
That li'l dynamo is a powerhouse! Saw Rick many times with both Johnny and Edgar back in the day. Alan Merrill can be seen almost any Monday night at the migthy Jon Paris's jams at B.B. Kings on 42nd St. in NYC. Jon is also one mofo of a guitarist and all around musician. Check him out!
You're right Jim, actually Alan Merrill, who plays rhythm guitar and sings the high harmony on this song with Rick, did write the classic "I love rock 'n' roll". Apart from writing it he also sang the original 1975 first released version of "I love rock 'n' roll" with the band Arrows, and it's on youtube if you want to see it.
Here's a little bit of trivia about this video. The guy playing second guitar to Rick in this video is Alan Merrill. He wrote the Joan Jett hit I Love Rock And Roll. I told you it was a little bit of trivia!! Rick is by far the most underrated guitar player on the planet. Great performer and even greater guitar player. I've must have seen him live eight or nine times and he always kicked ass. Wrote some great songs, had great bands, just could never get over. Go figure.
Originally, Easy Action, came from the album, "If I Weren't Romantic I'd Shoot You", released in 1978 on Blue Sky. I love all of Rick Derringer's albums from 1973-1980! My favorites are Derringer-1976, Sweet Evil-1977, and Live-1977. Too bad there aren't enough videos besides Rock & Roll Hootchie Koo from the Midnight Special Or DKRC. I remember he was on DKRC in 1979 playing stuff from the Guitars & Women album. It would be great to see promo videos from 1973-1980 by the guitarist. Thanks!
I hear ya! Got Rick Derringer and Friends live from 89 on CD from KBFH.... After hearing his new 'religious' angle songs, then hearing this, you wonder if he was a bit like Gene Simmons and Ted Nugent in his younger days, having so many females around back in the day!
One of my favorite '70s albums is simply called "Derringer" (blue-ish cover) with songs like "Let Me In" and "Beyond The Universe." I love those songs but can't find them here - yet. Rick is one of my favorites. :)

Rick actually recorded some of Aces parts for kiss when Ace was too messed up to record.

If you have everything by Rick (like me) you have quite a collection! Love this LP! Lots of great tunes for the style on this album.
"Good Dirty Fun" in 83 was his last true rock LP before he had a 10 year gap ( while producing) before putting out 5 blues CD's between 1993 and 2000.
