German Govt. announced that by 2020 they will have appr. 2 million electric cars on the roads. Mercedes already have a complete electric car line-up from compact cars to trucks (!)
2020 America: GM launches the Godzillasaurus XLS, a 6 ton SUV that gets 3 miles to the gallon (gas: $25/gallon projected), because "thats what the people want".
So the go-to argument for Beck against the environmentalists is one of impersonating a simpleton's way of speaking? I suppose it speaks to the bias of the person who is willing to rely on innacurate impressions and nonsensical facial expressions when presenting their position on an issue, rather than indulging in an argument based on logic and evidence.
glenn beck said that the fuel cell stacks "make" the energy. well, that is just about as scientifically incorrect as every other scientifically testable statement he has ever made on evolution, global warming, and stem cell research. Ha!
You put water in and it takes hydrogen, outputs pure oxygen. So Glenn's main problem is that there aren't enough gas stations and it uses water... Hey Glenn do you know what oceans are made of?
Not the case, the car takes in purified hydrogen (which is often harvested -ironically- from petroleum or natural gas) as a fuel, then does the electron swap mambo with atmospheric oxygen in the stack, producing electrical current and water vapor as products.
If you do try and produce hydrogen out of water, you need electricity greater then what you recover in a fuel cell, so you're better off just using the electricity in the first place.
@Pseudologic It doesn't use water. He was explaining how people get some of the Hydrogen for fueling: cracking water. It uses H2 and combines with the O2 in the intake and water is what comes out. The amount of water that comes out is also comparable to the amount of water that comes out of the tailpipe of a standard ICE car.
@rudgerjr Okay thanks. Come to think of it, it obviously uses hydrogen and not water, why would anyone go to fill up on water to a station when theres some in your tap. Still though, I don't understand what his problem was. Seems like a win to me. Hydrogen is something we could generate in great quantities.
It's not "pseudoscience", it's a developing technology. Of course it's not effectively marketable yet for how well it works, just like the Duryea and the Ford Quadricycle weren't in their day either.
Except GM doesn't make crap cars. Corvette, Camaro, CTS, Escalade, Tahoe, Suburban, Malibu, New Eqinox, Acadia, Traverse, Enclave, SRX, Silverado .. all great cars and trucks .. made by GM
Hadjibandit, get off your high horse. Most car companies make moderately decent to exceptional cars as a whole, just certain models completely suck. That's like being so narrow-minded as to call a certain group of people morons(IE: Republicans/Democrats are morons!). The real issue with cars are the energy that they use which GM is striving to differentiate, sadly unlike car companies like Toyota.
@IceHedge "GM is striving to differentiate, sadly unlike car companies like Toyota.
IceHedge 5 months ago" Actually Toyota and Honda have been investing into hydrogen fuel cell vehicles long before GM and most Detroit automakers have. Honda as of right now has probably one of the only available hydrogen fuel cell vehicles available for lease the FCX clarity. And unlike most of GM's prototypes. Theirs is a fully working vehicles with special implemented features. Even a home refueling station
@EpiDemic117 Very interesting regarding Toyota's research. I can't believe I fell victim to one too many uneducated news reporters; and believed them! As for the rolling through stop signs.. well, the sign isn't a triangle, nor do the signs say "yield," nor are the signs yellow. So.. even though it may be healthier for the car, rolling through right on reds/stop signs in general really gets on my nerves since -everyone- does it. I agree with slowly approaching an intersection though!
Sorry for the long comment. Secondly, the next biggest issue with modern automobiles today aren't how they're made or what sources they use, but the millions of renegades that drive them. People speed, run right on reds, roll through stop signs, and etc BILLIONS of times a day, yet nothing is done about it, which causes wrecks, which causes MORE energy consumption. Third, whatever you have against Glenn or anyone else you can keep to yourself, it makes you look immature.
@IceHedge I have noticed this same issue iwth driving however I've noticed that when you roll on stop signs it's actually better for the engine instead of making a complete stop then having to accelerate. There are a couple of techniques drivers can use to cut down on fuel consumption. One of them is keeping your foot off the gas when a red light is a couple hundred feet ahead. By doing this the car will slow and if the light turns green it doesn't require as much energy to resume cruising speed
Combined with nuke plants this is actually feasible. And if you're afraid that every nuclear plant is almost certainly doomed to explode like a Soviet POS from 1970, do a little research on modern nuclear power technology.... And free market capitalism's work ethic and quality vs communism's.

I would buy one if it was only affordable, had a consistent reliable network of refilling stations and would be well built to last for a long period of time. Why didn't we have a prototype ten or fifteen years ago before is my question? Americans can do it if we are motivated enough. Thanks again for posting this and I enjoy the honesty and sense of humor.
B, have a college kid from Redlands and a mechanic build you one - in any car.
C, you can safely separate, compress and store hydrogen yourself, on your own property, or, buy it from places that weld or sell other gases (local propane supplier). Did you not see the Chicago fitting under the gas cap, where you fill up?
STOP thinking of everyone else (the gov-ME) taking care of you.
That has always been, and is obviously still is, our #1 problem.
This is America, you gotta realize that. If motivated, we can do a lot. If we mass-produced this car, there will be a bunch of people opening Hydrogen fuel-cell stations.
I'm so use to the normal media shill. Glenn's been proving to be something different. Nice video. Keep up the good work Glenn a lot of us are hoping you turn out to be something special.
Dude you're nuts. You act like the same people who would benefit from hydrogen cars wouldn't benefit from electric cars. IT'S THE SAME PEOPLE!!! The difference is at a current point it is easier to store hydrogen than it is battery power. Plus someone made a valid point earlier. Off peak will be peak with the creation of electirc cars. Not to mention we get 80% of our energy from coal domestically. We may want to address that first.
Hydrogen is not an energy resource, but an energy carrier, like a battery.
2 to 4 units of energy is required to make 1 unit of Hydrogen energy. Infrastructure required would cost over $100 Billion in taxpayer money and we would still be dependent on the same crooks that supply us with gasoline.
Plug-in electric cars only need a $5 extension cord and are recharged during off peak. Cheap, simple and clean.
If everyone recharges off peak, then the off peak will become peak. For the electric car to work, we will need to greatly increase our energy supply by building nuclear, hyrdo, solar, wind, and clean coal plants. Nuclear is the best option because of the 0 emmissions and power output. Plus, a plug in car could be supplemented with hydrogen in case the battery runs out.
Most hydrogen is extracted from fossil based gasses. How much energy does that take? They want you to think it comes from water. If it came from water that would be great. Currently the amount of electricity it takes to produce the hydrogen from electrolysis is quite high. If the electricity came from wind farms or solar energy that would be a whole different ball game. Sure its cleaner out the tail pipe, but how much energy does it take to get the gas or water into hydrogen form?
Hydrogen is extracted by a process called electrolysis. Basically, running a current through water causes the oxygen and hydrogen molecules to break apart and be released as a gas. And as far as cleaner, the burning of a hydrocarbon (gas) releases CO2 and water vapor, hydrogen releases water vapor. CO2 is also what we as humans breath out! I don't think that CO2 is a pollutant, but if it makes the hippies happy and it costs less, I will switch.
Correct, Hydrogen from electrolysis would be cleaner than extracting it from fossil based gasses such as natural gas, which is where most hydrogen comes from in the USA. So far no ones figured out how to efficiently make hydrogen in mass quantities using electrolysis. Since these fuel cells don't get their Hydrogen from electrolysis, it doesn't make much sense right now.
You know, that's exactly what will happen. Every form of energy, no matter how clean, will ALWAYS be the enemy unless it's free. Even then, it'll "pollute" however Al Gore says it does.
Hyrdogen is good, but it has some flaws, namely the extreme high pressure that it is stored in. It is like having a bomb under your car. I think that small turbo diesel engines turning generators that provide electricity to electric motors in the wheels are the best way to go. That is how freight trains run.
Yeah, i'm not worried about it catching fire. It is just that the hydrogen is in a tank under 10000psi. Normal air pressure is 14.2psi. The expansion rate of the hydrogen gas itself would be considered an explosion. Anyway, there is always going to be pros and cons with any technology.
I see these in limited use, I feel eletric plug in cars are the future. Just means an upgraded power grid, and an ability for cars to recharge just about anywhere.
That would take pressure off battery limitations on travel range.
It's more efficient and renewable
Fuel cells are neat, but won't be able to meet the numbers.
This would be a cool solution if they solve the problem of charge time. Even if there are lots of places to charge the car, driving for two hours and then sitting for 1 waiting for my battery to charge isn't a reasonable solution. The nice thing about using physical material to transport the energy (gas, hydrogen, natural gas, etc.) is that it takes only a minute or two to load up on the material. Moving and storing electron directly is still a relatively slow process.
Power companies charge by the kilowatt. All you'd need is a network ID to be billed and that could be integrated in your cars charger like a credit card number.
As for outlets? Every parking place could have one, it's just plumbing is all.
Most of us don't drive for two hours or more most of the time, so staying charged around town while the car is parked makes more sense. Actually shared electric autonomous vehicles (robot cars that drive themselves) are a much better idea. They can pick you up curbside and park themselves.
Well technically there is oil in the fuel cell since thats what plastic is made from.
Why does Glenn Beck seem like a halfway reasonable guy when hes not talking about religion?

Its kind of lame. If GM were serious about fueling cars on water they would have done it by now.
