This was my Dad's montra to me. He always told me that big girls don't cry. I was about three years when he started saying this too me. I think I broke his heart when I would cry. He always told me to be a soldier too. He toughened me up all the time. He had been a medic in the Air Force. He was tough as nails and so am I. He would spank me and I would get so mad at him I wouldn't shed one tear. He would keep hitting me too and say I am spanking you until you cry & his hand would get tired first

The difference back then, teens and kids never had arguments about what music was better back then. It was all favored by all the kids, even some parents. You don't hear guys saying back then "The Beatles are terrible, they sound like 10 year olds and they should kill themselves." Today, the remarks about Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black show how much mainstream music is not as good as it was. I'm a teen, but I love the oldies.
I am 23 but I grew u listening to Casey Kasem "Countin Down the Hits" on the radio. Now I love the modern music of todays time, mostly piano rock, but I just cannot change the channel when one of the oldies comes on because even I realize these guys could really sing, there are no technology tricks or cd alterations. What you hear is what you get, they would sound the same if they sang to you in your own living room, which is why they are so great.
These are absolute classics. I accidentally tuned into Gold while I was radio surfing and they were playing this. Since I heard it I've found a lot of other great songs by these and similar artists. In case you're wondering what's the big deal, I'm only thirty and absolutely enjoy it, what I'm trying to relay is that this music is for all generations and all ages. Timeless and really unimitable.
(Continued from my previous comment, as it appears to have been cut off...)
My first instinct would be to assume that he was "on something" -- but the truth is that Mr. Valli suffered from a serious hearing problem (otosclorosis) that was later corrected / improved via surgery.
Inspired by the Movie "Tennessee's Partner" shown in the late 50's on channel 9 WOR's Million Dollar Movie. John Payne smacks actress Rhonda Fleming across the face and Fleming responds by saying:"BIG GIRLS DON"T CRY!"
The song is Great, but its not true! Try it out, open a door while a bingo hall is in the middle of game and yell BINGO! Big girls do cry; they cuss too!
You older folks have to understand to your parents, this was junk! And to their parents what they listened to was junk. Remember when Elvis was morally wrong and corrupt? As we age, time tends to leave us behind in our era and we don't understand the new generation to come along. And in 30 years when you're long dead and you're kiddos are your age, they'll look back and go now Justin Beiber, that was music! Its a never ending story, lol!
@nesha011083 I agree with you 100%. Music is ever changing and just because today's music is different than yesterdays doesn't make it garbage. That's like saying unless you wear the same type of clothes and hairstyles that your parents wore, you don't know 'real" fashion. I like whatever music moves me at any given moment. I might be listening Dinah Washington, then suddenly feel the need to hear some Alicia Keys. There is no one generation that holds the patent on "real music."
@nesha011083 there is no way justin bieber will be popular in 30 years nor will lady gaga or any of these new artists, the thing about todays music is everyone forgets about it after a few months, justin biebers career is almost over already.
@nesha011083 If my child looks back and says "now Justin Beiber, that was music!" the gods of music will roll over in their grades and I will personally cry myself to sleep.
@nesha011083 Exactly. I suspect its always been that way. We tend to love the music of our youth. For me that's the 60's. Good music stands the test of time.
@turnyip Sherry is my favorite too but YT keeps removing it. Sherry was the first Four Seasons song I ever heard and I remember that first hearing. When Frankie started out with his falsetto I thought, "OMG, what was that? I have to hear more!"
I like the old black and white where you can see the real people and hear the music in the quality it sounded like in the 1960s. Four Seasons was the name of a bowling alley in NJ. when Tommy and Nick left the band, others came on board. Eventually, Bob Guardio just wrote and quit performing. Then they went by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
It's so sad when I see people my age that don't recognize amazing music Like this. I'm 14 and when I told my friend that I loved Big Girls Dont Cry they went on to say
Eww I Hate fergie...this upsets me.
But thanks to the show Jersey boys there seems to be a few more teens discovering the four seasons.
DID any one out there know tha there was a 5th season in this group ?His name is BOB CREWE . HE was the seasons producer, original drummer, and co. song writer.
@John1948Five It was just the four seasons until everyone but Frankie Valli quit the group, so they put in three new singers and counted the drummer as the other "season"
@John1948Five orignally they were called the Four Lovers (imagine that name today). They changed their name to the Four Seasons after a bowling alley in New Jersey. Later, after Frankie and Nick left and Bob quit performing, they added new guys leaving them with Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
@behdoc WELL... because in the beginning it was just the Four Seasons inclusive of Frankie... then all three of them except Frankie left... one got booted out due to Mob debt, the other one for no reason, just left and the last one the writer chose to just write... so he left, so then they replaced the three missing guys, with four guys, and Frankie up front and changed the name... to Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, go see the play in Chicago, Toronto, London or New York it explains it all...
@behdoc they were originally just the Four seasons, but members left the band and Frankie Valli went on to become Frankie Valli and the Four seasons with new band members. this is actually an old clip when they were just the Four seasons.
@behdoc after all the original four season band members left the group, Frankie recruted new members, more than 4. so it was called Frankie valli and the four seasons. it was also Frankies way of being loyal to his 3 best friends NICKY, TOMMY,BOB, and lets not forget JOE LONG.
@behdoc actually the band was called "the four seasons", as in all four of them. later they made frank the face and renamed as FV and the four seasons. kinda like bob marley and the wailers or paul mccartney and wings
@behdoc originally they were just the four seasons but when tommy & nick left and bob stopped performing it became Frankie Valli and the four seasons because he had four other people with him
@behdoc It was just "The Four Seasons" until they got huge. He probably got more money than the others too.
Frankie's voice was a sensation at the time. Remember pocket sized transistor radios had just come out . These records and Motown still sound so great today because they had to sound good on a 4" box.
You'd be on the bus going home from the beach, a girl with beehive hair and a pointy bra would have this playing, the kids would start dancing and the old ladies would frown- it was great!
@behdoc It was originally just "The Four Seasons", but when the other three original members dropped out (for various reasons), Frankie replaced them with four new guys and renamed the group "Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons".
@behdoc At this point in their career, they were simply The 4 Seasons, though their records read 'featuring the 'sound' of Frankie Valli'. My favorite Season was Nick Massi, who rarely got credit for his vocal arrangements. Later, Valli & Gaudio simply hired good singers/musicians to back Valli and called them 'The 4 Seasons'.
@Polyphemus47 The Supremes were far from the first to do this. Off the top of my head I can name Dion and the Belmonts and Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers.
@John1948Five Sorry--Dion was the main attraction, as was Lymon. Patti LaBelle was the top bill originally in the Bluebelles. But Diana Ross was the first in a group of same-level talents to demand top billing and get it. David Ruffin tried to do the same thing in the Temptations and failed, for example. The Four Seasons were originally named for their favorite bowling alley, according to PBS. And they should have stayed that way, imo.
@double1970 then get the hell oput of here. this is better than fergies song "big girls dont cry" this song is about fifty years old and people still remember it. see in fifty years if people remembers fergies version. no, theyll remember this song
I'm 15 and LOVE this music SO MUCH. My friends all think I'm lame, but I believe it's what music should have stayed as. I'm totally with MonaRocks09 and throughitall327. (:
Even thought the sound quality isn't so great, I like the live recordings better than lip-syncing. BTW, Frankie forgets the words at 1:23. Grew up listening to these guys in their heyday.
I'm 18 and ashamed of my generation and their taste in that type of music. I wish I had been born during the time the good music was alive and well! :(
@MonaRocks09 WHat do you know about the 50s/60s? You watch a few music videos and a few movies and get this impression that everyday was nonstop dancing and singing lol. They had similar issues back then as they did today.
Frankie, Please do your Stretching every morning we want your voice for another 100 years, dont eat american food, eat just natural ground food, We all love you. Juan Arica/ Chile
Man you would think it would be uncomfortable to be standing around the microphone all crowded together for so long. They really needed to get more than one.
The recorded sound here leaves much to be desired, but the band and the singers are far better than is the studio recording. Sounds like the orchestral score had a bit if touching up here and there as well, adding to the overall impact. I'd take this over the studio recording any day.
I love frankie valli and the four seasons. I remember hearing them when I was little my dad and my uncles ricky and tarry loved them. I like Frankie Valli and the Four seasons because of them.
Haha Frankie Valli messed up the lyrics on the last part...said "Told my girl we had to break up" instead of "Shame on you, your mama said"...So they ARE human after all!! These guys were outstanding though...as good as the beatles in their own right, just not as prolific.
I for one appreciate all you guys who post these videos no matter what the quality. so what if the quality isn't what todays standards ask for-if you lived in the 50's & 60's you watched it on b&w tv and it wasn't so good then either. I say "thank you" to you all- the memories are worth it!
And remember the tiny transistor radios that you had to hold a certain way so you wouldn't lose the signal, all the while hoping your batteries would outlast the song??? aha, the memories...
I do but let me tell you, they were better than nothing. My family had one television and I did not always want to watch some of the asinine shows that they watched. With the radio I had control over my entertainment for the day. Thanx for posting this one.
What sucks is that whatever tv show this is, they forced him to speed it up by 14 or so seconds....as compared to the then released album. The album sounds accurate. Man, sure wish I could hit those high notes. Actually, I can a little, but it strains the crap out of my glottis.
Ezzettfromhell: I don't understand why you post on all Four Seasons songs on YouTube that their quality is bad. Why don't you source a better version if you're so aggravated by it? Alternatively, I am sure you can purchase a CD or DVD of their music in as high a quality as per your "high standards". Give those who upload a break, and get off your own ass to contribute something positive.
But on his disco stuff (both with his band the Four Seasons and by himself), like 1975's "Swearin' to God," 1976's "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)" and 1978's "Theme from Grease," he couldn't outdo the Bee Gees' falsetto singing during their disco heyday of 1975-79. Ironically, the Brothers Gibb wrote the "Grease" theme.
Frankie screwed up! He said "told my girl we had to break up. Shame on u, u cried in bed." wrong buddy!

Did anyone notice how Frankie Valli "forgot" what part of the song he was on?
Right around the 1:20 mark he sings "told my girl we had to break up." (which is a line from earlier in the song.)
He somehow realizes his mistake and the next words out of his mouth are "shame on you, you're crying in bed..."
(The correct preceding words should have been "shame on you, your momma said...")
I've seen a few videos of him from back in the day where he does that!
My first instinct would be to assum

Even thought the sound quality isn't so great, I like the live recordings better than lip-syncing. BTW, Frankie forgets the words at 1:23. Grew up listening to these guys in their heyday.

@MonaRocks09 WHat do you know about the 50s/60s? You watch a few music videos and a few movies and get this impression that everyday was nonstop dancing and singing lol. They had similar issues back then as they did today.

Yeah I like that version better too. That was their live performance on the Ed Sullivan show in 1962.
There is a youtube video of, but I can't post the link. With some searching you should find it.

ovechkin100 2 years ago 2
The recorded sound here leaves much to be desired, but the band and the singers are far better than is the studio recording. Sounds like the orchestral score had a bit if touching up here and there as well, adding to the overall impact. I'd take this over the studio recording any day.
moosatious 2 years ago 3
YES. I totally agree. Frankie Valli is the Falsetto king.
Singing falsetto is one thing but swinging back and forth to/from falsetto like he did it... Amazing.

it was trouble finding this song after fergie got involved
trashatreena15 2 years ago 43
do you have the song?then yes, where did you get it?
biteXmyXdiary 2 years ago 3
Haha Frankie Valli messed up the lyrics on the last part...said "Told my girl we had to break up" instead of "Shame on you, your mama said"...So they ARE human after all!! These guys were outstanding though...as good as the beatles in their own right, just not as prolific.
iamguy991 2 years ago 4
I for one appreciate all you guys who post these videos no matter what the quality. so what if the quality isn't what todays standards ask for-if you lived in the 50's & 60's you watched it on b&w tv and it wasn't so good then either. I say "thank you" to you all- the memories are worth it!
upwards11 2 years ago 14
Yeah and don't forget those tinny am car radios with one speaker. LOL
John1948Five 2 years ago 3
And remember the tiny transistor radios that you had to hold a certain way so you wouldn't lose the signal, all the while hoping your batteries would outlast the song??? aha, the memories...
upwards11 2 years ago 3
I do but let me tell you, they were better than nothing. My family had one television and I did not always want to watch some of the asinine shows that they watched. With the radio I had control over my entertainment for the day. Thanx for posting this one.
ekocentric 2 years ago 5
I kinda like this fastpaced version.
rgncajun21 2 years ago
What sucks is that whatever tv show this is, they forced him to speed it up by 14 or so seconds....as compared to the then released album. The album sounds accurate. Man, sure wish I could hit those high notes. Actually, I can a little, but it strains the crap out of my glottis.

thanks John... this song reminds me of so many good moments!!!!!
noobe29 2 years ago
Ezzettfromhell: I don't understand why you post on all Four Seasons songs on YouTube that their quality is bad. Why don't you source a better version if you're so aggravated by it? Alternatively, I am sure you can purchase a CD or DVD of their music in as high a quality as per your "high standards". Give those who upload a break, and get off your own ass to contribute something positive.
BobBrady13 2 years ago 4
Bob that's kind of what I was thinking but I was too polite to say so. LOL
John1948Five 2 years ago
he's the king of falsetto
aquafishsoup 2 years ago
But on his disco stuff (both with his band the Four Seasons and by himself), like 1975's "Swearin' to God," 1976's "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)" and 1978's "Theme from Grease," he couldn't outdo the Bee Gees' falsetto singing during their disco heyday of 1975-79. Ironically, the Brothers Gibb wrote the "Grease" theme.

It is what it is. The choice was to let you see it with all it's flaws or not. If I had one with better quality it would be here.
John1948Five 2 years ago
Yep these people are retarded... They act like it was your choice that the video isn't 100% crystal clear.... This isn't that bad of quality either

y,know, I thought Jersey Boys sped up the tempo for most of their songs way too much, but this is about on par with the tempo they used. Yay.
