@halfmumi Not sure what you mean, but try heating your mold 1st. Pour some lead in it, let it sit awhile, take it out and back in the pot. It should remelt almost instantly, then see what you get.
i have a question, did you come in direct contact with the lead? im just wondering cuz im thinking of making stuff with lead and worrying about all the lead poisoning stuff... could you please help?
I was melting lead last night, there was like never ending slag (i think thats what u call it). I just gave up after about a half an hour of removing it. Is it supposed to take tat long?
@hifatpeople You were just destroying your lead. The slag is not supposed to be removed. It protects the melt from oxidizing. By removing it, you let the oxygen oxidize another layer and so on, until there's no more lead. You're supposed to remove the excessive amounts of slag only, and leave a thin layer, then push it aside right before casting.
@livepies lead is ALWAYS toxic. Wear appropriate protection ALWAYS and ALWAYS be sure to wash your hands before doing ANYTHING after handling lead. It is super toxic, especially smelting it, as seen in this video.
lead woud prob say "MELTING! IM MELTING OH WHAT A WORLD MELTING!" quoth the lead ingot or what it would say if it had the personality of the wicked witch from that one movie lmao!
@fireworkgalore nah that has nothing to do with lead unless its lead paint because the evaporation process which dries up the paint leaves it slightly dusty and the dust you can get cancer from
a little speech as to equipment, safety precautions, where you got lead, how long to melt, hand protection, where to get molds, what you plan to do with your idea, etc would be good.
@HR1800 : it looks like no words needed to describe the process. You can see and hear a burner, which looks like something from a survivalist camping "stove" burner. If you can't get to 625+F (melting point of lead), you need to increase the oxygen to the flame (similar to a bunsen burner does). Add bars, wait a couple minutes after the last bar, poor, wait till cool. Pretty simple really.
Just becareful when you add lead to a lead pot with molten lead. If there is any water, which may come from your own sweat, you might find yourself not just touching the lead, but maybe tasting it. Like Boom. Put all the lead you will use and melt it. If, you want more then wait until you empty the pot and add more.
Molten lead hitting your face at high speeds will leave a mark... like ouch.
how come you use lead is it becuase of the low melting temp. i usally use zinc since it melts around 787 degrees. the only thing is where did you get that brick mold!!
I used lead because I have alot of it lying around and because its easier to melt than zinc.
The mold came from my old woodshop teacher when I was in 7th grade. He had all sorts stuff like this in his classroom. When he passed away a year later all the stuff was being given away, his niece was nice enouf to give me the mold.
Mm, that's a fork you'll never eat from again!
