Just like there are highly paid singers who can't really sing, so too are there highly paid actors who can not act, and Will Smith is one of them.
People say it was Will Smith's show, and yeah it was. But without the supporting cast, you wouldn't have a show! Hubert made the role hers whereas the new actress had no presence and was simply there to make up the numbers. It's a shame they couldn't reconcile. Hubert doesn't strike me as a woman to compromise, though.

Behind the scenes she may have had some issues with Will and his personality and vice versa. But the only thing that mattered to me is that "The Best Aunt Viv" got replaced. After this woman left i barely watched the show anymore.

@militarymight I remember now she has bone problems. Some actors toil for many years before becoming "overnight" successes. It didn't happen for her and the show and her character were not vehicles where it would. She thought she was going to be a breakout star or standout like Michael Keaton, JJ, or Urkel? There have been bigger actors than her who have had to audition for parts. If they really want them and respect the director and other actors, they have to put ego aside and audition. No one knew her before the show and most only know her because she was on the show. The sitcom was made around Will's rapper persona. Without the show, she would have had no part. Talking bitter years 20 years later only makes her look like the one with the huge ego. He was a hit and she was and is a nobody.

Daphne Maxwell Reid played a better aunt ivv,her personality fit the cast way better than janets,janet seemed more stiff around the collar,while Daphne was more down to earth and much more likable by viewers.

I gather from this video and the way that she's talking that she was a problem on the set, because she really didn't want to be there at all.
To be completely honest, Will made the show. I only watched for Will and couldn't care less she was replaced. I do feel sorry she is clearly bitter about the situation after so many years and maybe Will Smith could have handled her in a more deferential manner. But you can't act like she was really the star of a show when really her catch phrase was "Well? Phillip?" I mean, seriously? Heh, I'm pretty sure the ratings stayed the same even after the replacement.

I always wondered how the last few seasons of Fresh Prince would have been with Janet in the role of Vivian. i never did like Daphne for 2 reasons. She never showed any real emotions in her role. As where Janet did . And 2 ? Daphne played the role alittle differently. It was like Janet was this strong black woman who had her say. But Daphne was this breezy kind of character. I noticed that most of Daphne's parts weren't as good as Janet's.
I agree, the best Vivian in my opinion. When I was little I liked Daphne better, but getting older I realized Janet fit the role better and was the better actress. Plus Janet actually looked like she could really be Carlton & Ashley's mother--not just Hilary's.
I don't know the details, but i can absolutely see young Will being a total brat and egomaniacal. She said when she told him to stop telling yo mama's so black jokes, he basically told her to buzz off cause he listens to no one. He would also taunt her about being fired from the show in radio interviews and what not. I think the two should reconcile but it seems Janet has made her peace with it and Will is too big a star now to do it. For all we know he believes he did nothing wrong
To tell you the truth I liked both Vivian's. I didn't understand why they changed her until I watched a couple of videos, but the truth is if you can't treat someone right offstage then why would they want to keep you. It sucks she lost her job but at least they found someone almost as funny. You can tell by listening to her that she was really stressed with the show anyways. Maybe her being pregnant had something to do with it buy it's still not right to treat someone like crap.

@Brady2k10 I think that "pursuit of happines" shows us what Will is capable of. There's no comedy in that movie just pure drama. And when I think of will I think of comedy and that is what he's best at. But when I saw POH I saw another side to his acting that completley disputes your coment. @missgj I guess you've never had an agent. Plenty of actors in Hollywood are in TV shows or movies because their agent committed them to the role -- not because the actor REALLY wanted the role. An agent's paycheck depends on their clients getting work. And if the actor wants to continue to get work, they'll comply with their agent. Because the minute an agency feels you're not making them money, they drop you, and it's HARD to get work w/o one.
@PopCulture20 Yes, but extremely difficult. Most producers/casting directors only deal with legitimate agency represented actors. However, open casting calls and/or knowing someone connected to the project can get non-represented actors in the door.

Although everyone knows that Daphne Reid could never be the Aunt Viv that Janet was, we really do not know what happened behind the scenes. I think that 20 years is a long time to still carry the hurt, but different people respond to situations in unique ways. But she still looks good even after all that!

There have been bigger actors than her who have had to audition for parts. If they really want them and respect the director and other actors, they have to put ego aside and audition. No one knew her before the show and most only know her because she was on the show. The sitcom was made around Will's rapper persona. Without the show, she would have had no part. Talking bitter years 20 years later only makes her look like the one with the huge ego. He was a hit and she was and is a nobody.

To be completely honest, Will made the show. I only watched for Will and couldn't care less she was replaced. I do feel sorry she is clearly bitter about the situation after so many years and maybe Will Smith could have handled her in a more deferential manner. But you can't act like she was really the star of a show when really her catch phrase was "Well? Phillip?" I mean, seriously? Janet Hubert appears to be in constant enmity with Will Smith for reasons which she only knows. Will Smith once said that he & Janet had never been close throughout the 'Fresh Prince' episodes. Some subliminal clues may be seen in some of the episodes between them.

I always wondered how the last few seasons of Fresh Prince would have been with Janet in the role of Vivian. i never did like Daphne for 2 reasons. She never showed any real emotions in her role. As where Janet did . And 2 ? Daphne played the role alittle differently. It was like Janet was this strong black woman who had her say. But Daphne was this breezy kind of character. I noticed that most of Daphne's parts weren't as good as Janet's.

@missgj I guess you've never had an agent. Plenty of actors in Hollywood are in TV shows or movies because their agent committed them to the role -- not because the actor REALLY wanted the role. An agent's paycheck depends on their clients getting work. And if the actor wants to continue to get work, they'll comply with their agent. Because the minute an agency feels you're not making them money, they drop you, and it's HARD to get work w/o one.

@PopCulture20 Yes, but extremely difficult. Most producers/casting directors only deal with legitimate agency represented actors. However, open casting calls and/or knowing someone connected to the project can get non-represented actors in the door.

I think the people who are calling her bitter obviously haven't seen the entire show. At the end, she says that she's fine now. She's happy. Her son's about to go to college, she's remarried, she's done some stage shows. She's quite alright. And I don't remember her saying anything bad about the 40-something year old Will Smith. Yeah, she had something to say about 20-something year old Will, but he was a selfish jerk. He'll admit that to you. That's why his first marriage failed. Janet is ok.

Aunt Vivian was a much better aunt that Daphne.When Janet left the show I didnt care to watch the show the Daphne cz Viv had much more excitement in her character

There is always three sides to every story: her side, his side and the truth. Although everyone knows that Daphne Reid could never be the Aunt Viv that Janet was, we really do not know what happened behind the scenes. I think that 20 years is a long time to still carry the hurt, but different people respond to situations in unique ways. But she still looks good even after all that!
