My husband and I love these shows and watch a couple of them every night. Thank God we recorded them before GSN stopped airing them. They give me a little view into the world I was born into, as I'm a mid-fiftes vintage myself. We have some to love these people. I cried when Fred Allen passed away. I felt silly, this being old news, but the sense of loss was real.
The late Robert Q. Lewis was a popular radio & TV host in the 50's & 60's. Even appeared in a few movies, such as "An Affair to Remember" with Cary Grant. Very urbane, suave, witty & charming. What a funny episode, with Fred trying on those glasses & such. Gotta admit, those glasses did help cover his eye bags. Thanks a lot for posting this delightful episode! :)
Would've LOVED to see Robert Q. as a regular panelist. He was the perfect fit for this show: urbane, witty, and elegant. The male equivalent of Arlene Francis, if you will.
I was a boy in the 50s, so I remember the times, but not really this show. I discovered it recently on you tube and I am totally hooked. I have to watch it every night before I go to bed. I love everything about it, especially the civility and respect. I've grown very fond of all these participants, I only wish they were around now..
We rarely got to see Daly in his eye classes. He put them on in YouTube's What's My Line Arthur Godfrey. And Fred did wear eye glasses on WML to hide the bags.
listen closely--dorothy is guessing and wonders about steve allen being in ca.-someone says 'hal block'(bennett?)then someone says he's with wendy barrie...
Panelist Robert Q Lewis identified Allen, and Allen almost identified Robert Q. Lewis. Both men were very classy, very funny.
Aside --
After Fred Allen died the producers left the position open for guest panelists. That kept viewers' interest as we wondered who would appear as a panelist. Still, I wonder what the show would have done if G-T had put Lewis under contract as a regular panelist. When Kilgallen died and the panel then had TWO guest panelists, WML lost its focus.
I agree about the two guest panelist thing. I would have liked to see Robert Q. become a regular panel member, but he was probably way too busy to become a regular member on the show. He was hosting so much back then.
I was a kid back then and I always tried to guess who the guest was before the signature was done.

More fun in 5 minutes or so than in an entire film today!
Thanks for keeping this era alive on the net!
All of these folks knew how to ad lib better than they do today-
the reference to Hal Block by Bennett was classic!

I'm sorry they didn't take longer to guess the divine Mr. Lewis but the fun they had with him after they figured it out more than made up for it.

I love Bob Lewis's mask...with the glasses embroidered...a very close second to Arlene's with the eyelashes!

Fred Allen gives the name and hometown of a lady who admits to having bags under her eyes ... a different era, indeed.

I wasn't alive back in the 50s, but I love to watch old game shows. This was a time when tv was entertaining. If only tv could be like this today.
