I think it should be shorter at the top. I recently got my hair cut from very long to very shortish. It's pretty short now. I look freaking so so so much better with short hair it's crazy. I just stick a bit of gel in it, rub it around, smack it down and give it that kinda intentionally messy look. Or at least I try. It looks good none the less.

I have the same haircut right now. It's like a fauxhawk style i.e. short on sides and longer in back and long on top. Mine is fairly long on the top, so I have to comb it back a la george Clooney, which looks good. It's hard to get it to stand up like a fauxhawk. Maybe you should try that?
