I love this game i used to have it my Mom got the Atari 7800 along with a some nice games for a good price some of the games were Ms. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Midnight Magic, Double Dragon, Kung Fu Master and a few others.
me acuerdo haber jugado ese juego en los 80s, por cierto esas lineas rojas-blancas a los lados joden la vista! estaba mucho mejor el Enduro de Activision para atari 2600
Terrible port in the Atari 2600, and the 5200 version was slightly better. But the 7800 managed to bring us ( finally) a good port of pole position :)
@Hellfireknightmare That's because the other cars were drawn using the 2600's background graphics, which have a much lower resolution than the foreground graphics.
I'm so freaking tired of people saying 'the games we play today are so terrible and these games kick a**.' It they're so bad then why are they doing so well and continuing with game systems? I agree the older games are fun but newer games, depending on what you buy, can be extremely fun. If you don't like it then stop playing it and stop making riots on YouTube about how crappy they are. Sheesh.
Great game. Waking up to watch Cartoons on Saturday and then plug in Pole Position for the 2600. Great times. My Dad and I used to beat the crap outta this game. :D
By God this must be one of the high-end Atari 2600 games that really pushed to the limits of the system's capability. I didn't think the Atari could handle a game this advanced.
@wandov8 Activision designed a custom in-cartridge sound chip for the Atari 2600 which could provide background music and enhanced sound effects, but they only ever used it in one game: Pitfall II.
Yes, I am old and was impressed at the time...atually something is wrong with this video...if memory serves, the cars tires flickered white, to make it look like they were rotating...you can't see that in the vid here....was a nice little effect that really made the game look better.
When I was a kid, I woke-up on Sunday mornings with these sounds while my brother was playing. It was a bit intoxicating, and almost hypnotic, and I just knew I would spend the rest of the day home playing this. I miss my 2600.
I had this game. I liked it, but I don't think I appreciated how amazing it is for a 2600 conversion. They've done some really simple yet really clever things to give it a 3D sensation.
Absolute classic. A definate must have, for any Atari 2600 owner then & now.
wow, it looks actually very good! I never had pole position on our Atari 2600 back in the 80s! We had "Enduro", but Pole Position is really far better technically, phew! And this fitted into 128 bytes (yes, bytes!) of RAM, and no Video RAM? Unbelievable!!
Best technical game I think was Solaris - it was the latest game I've bought for the Atari 2600 before switching to the Master System (had C64 in the 80s as well ^^)
Awesome game that for some reason gets quite a bit of slagging from those that really wont have played it long enough to know
Graphically poor by today's standards but great sensation of speed and believable feel from the the world you race in
A race lasted just 5minutes but it was in that time(if playing this properly) that you attempt to beat you're last score - compelling once you get the hang of it
Play this today and you may be misguided by first impressions or by others that slag it
I just found a working joystick, too, and I just played it. I loved it greatly. I, of course, used a 1976 telly with a 6-switch model from 1978. I enjoyed playing greatly.
great game for its time

@Alaska1925 They did the best they could, given the limitations of the 2600 hardware.
vwestlife 2 months ago
@Alaska1925 The 2600 only had 128 Bytes of Ram and no video ram. This simple reply has used up 128 characters / bytes alone.

Now this was a must-have cartridge back in the day. I always wondered: Why the rest of the cars were so different from yours Xddd

@ridethelapras Look at my video of "Solaris". That was definitely one of the most advanced Atari 2600 games ever made.

@vwestlife Solaris has good graphics, but the same sound effects of simple games...
