I realize that it makes them money by doing so, but it just continues to make us more materialistic and less concerned about how our materialism affects the rest of the world. It also perpetuates the idea that we can only be defined by the things we have, so if we have no "stuff" we must also be worthless people.
This ad is disturbing. "What are you without your stuff? Better yet, without your stuff, who are you?" If those questions strike you as deep or just non-absurd, spend ten minutes here and now without distracting yourself. I believe in you; you can do it.
@moarsaur I completely agree with you, but don't those thoughts play right into our current society? Postmodern America is dominated by philosophies which directly relate the value of life to the quality of the life being lived, and which revolve around the notion that "he who dies with the most toys wins." We may say this ad is disturbing -- and rightly so -- but our actions as a society suggest differently. Just a thought...
