If you ever get the chance to sit down and speak with someone who was there, in it, in vietnam, i recommend you do. you wont get the chance here soon. and there are some INCREDIBLE but horrific stories to be heard. war is hell, war is unfair, war is mankind. period. and yet somehow we can raise our families, work hard, and come home with a smile sooner or later. For those who never got to, RESPECT them
As a combat veteran of Nam 67-68 this brought back many memories. I wouldn't trade those memories for any amount of cash. I was scared hungry and tired but the relationships I made were worth it all.
@maveric23100 Paul is not an objectivist (ayn rand's philosophy). i do not understand why people and media are so obsessed with linking her to Paul.. they are two different people. Paul has decades of votes, articles, books of his own: that's the place to look, not at some novels.
It,s a different world and century yet the wars based on lies remain the same. At least the Troops coming home from Iraq are getting the respect and recognition they deserve this time. We just need more intelligent leaders. All that effort SHOULD have went to streamroll the TaliRANT camel F%$^*&^s in Afganistan and we,d still be respected there like we were when we first went in there !!! That Cult MohhaMUD started has declared War on us and they'll learn what the Germans,Japs,British did ! DTOU
My brother Robert Kerry Smith served there; he never saw the enemy with a rifle. He was full of shrapnel when he came back. Middle-of-the-night rockets and mortars. My cousin Michael Emeigh was killed there. Again, mortars and rifle fire. What a waste of Americans. There are huge reserves of oil off the coast of Vietnam. Again, oil. Well, I hate walking. Respect to all veterans and those on Active Duty... you are/were beautiful people.
Our Military won the Vietnam War. Our politicians lost it. Their disgrace is eternal, as are the souls of every person who perished and was caught by that terrible time of disgraceful American political cowardice. Semper Fi!
Segar's song is prescient. He understood the plight of real heroes......
Before this his song "Heavy Music" also got a lot of airplay here in Columbus. He began coming down her doing solo shows at OSU campus bars. I'm proud to have seen some of these performances and it was a jaw dropping experience. Just him and mostly guitar, a couple of songs playing piano, his big voice and powerful sense of groove. Long before he got much national attention.
Suddenly in 1976 he has a national hit and he's an overnight sensation. But we knew he had paid long hard dues.
This was a single in with no album out that got major airplay here in Columbus Ohio, 3 hrs from Detroit, and it fed the growing anti war movement at Ohio State. It was released in Jan. 1968 and the Tet Offensive began Jan 30th. It got our attention.
It has an musical oddity in the long stop at 2:24. If you count to the restart you get beat 3 or 4 of the 4th measure of silence. It's arbitrary. It must have been recorded in a live session with a cue to restart.
@93pavlaka This isn't about war, about victory, about superiorty. This song captures a moment when people questioned the system, the illusion is dissolving, peasants will rise.
Those who talk about the "Rules of War" are fooling themselves. War has no rules-it is a bloody gruesome mess with no real winners. For those of us who came of age in the late 60's and faced difficult decisions, VietNam will always be the defining event of our lives. As an anti-war Navy veteran, I implore future generations to always hate the war but love the soldier. And hate any politician that uses war as a political tool.
And after all those deaths and all those young people who did not get to live out their lives, what has really changed? Now we fight a war in a desert instead of a jungle, but aside from that, the song is as descriptive of today as it was of yesterday. We never learn.
ROE= Rules of Engagement. Kill people and break things to show the enemy fear. I will go home and help build schools in MY neighbohood. When the enemy fears me too much to let me return? 2+2= Don't tie my hands.
Wonderful video and you selected the perfect song to back it up. People just do not realize the horrors which our soldiers endure. Viet Nam was sheer torment on our soldiers and the survivors live with it until the day they die. It is always my honor to hug & shake the hands of any soldier. They are willing to die for our freedoms and liberties. Only 2 people have ever died for your freedom one is Jesus Christ and the second is the American soldier! They pay the ultimate sacrifices for us daily.
Soldiers deserve respect. They also have a responsibility to do right. That means not always following orders--The Mai Lai massacre is a good example. Don't just look up and stomp down because an officer tells you to. Fight for justice and good, that's truly American. Be willing to die, but also be willing to get court martialed for not shooting innocent civilians.
@pigjesus - I agree, but this is also why I do not have what it takes to be a soldier. I'm not going to lie...I'm far too much of a pussy! That however will never change my support and respect for a soldier who has the guts and perseverance to make a stand for people like me! Such as my husband who served. To be patriotic is one thing but to support what stands behind the patriotism is far different!
@lscooter1980-A lot of people knew they didn't have what it took and dodged the Vietnam draft. My dad was one of them, and I was born as a result. My grandpa was a soldier in WWII. Even he was glad that my dad did what he did.
@lscooter1980 There is no reason to be embarrassed that you can't be a soldier. A lot of people can't. John Fogerty got out of Vietnam and started a band. He did a lot more with a handful of songs than he did with a handful of ammo. Soldiers are around to defend your right to do whatever the hell you want.
@pigjesus My guess is the soldiers were sick of seeing their buddy"s die from booby traps and never getting to get their angst out because they rarely saw the V.C.Day after day of humpin through the bush while some asshole general in the sky tells you to move faster. Not knowing who was the enemy, could be a little kid, cant trust anybody that has a different uniform then you.Their girlfriends givin them Dear John letters.I"d bet my balls alot of Mai Lai"s happened.
@tcdave7 sorry I know you humped through the bush,I rarely watch war movies I read nonfiction books about wars and talk to my uncles friends who were there as he was also and thatswhat I got out of listening but they dont really talk about it..MSM?????ZIs that your favorite video game or something.
@TheRalphus666 First sir, thank you for your reply. Second, You are SO wrong about me. I have not served. My comments are based on 1)This song and the misinterperation of it
and 2) ROE My younger brother spent a year in Afghanistan and they was talkin' "Drop Guns". NOT a good morale builder for those who believed they were born free.
3) "Lions of Medina" and "We were Soldiers Once..." I have read.

@pigjesus Most soldiers wouldn't have followed those orders given by their Lt., there were other circumstances involved with the massacre, they were constantly being attacked from NVA that were supported by the village people, no excuse but there were many other factors that only those troops could explain. I was in that area later and I know how extreme the NVA were, can't say I would have followed orders but it would have been hard not to hate......just sayin'
That was a truck filled with civilians where you see all the kids dead and dieing. I was a couple of miles from this incident and Walter Cronkite was in country at the time. War is Murder. Anybody with a different opion is ignorant. It was a god dam murdering mess! I support our troops and I was one. Our troops need us when they get back 'to the world' and we owe alot it to them.Be there for them.....some how.
@carwashvnvmc - I agree with you 100 percent. War is an awful thing and people need to understand that it's not about vengeance, it's a place where people go with or without choice and never come back the same as when they left. I always give gratitude to those who serve, though I feel it's never enough. You and millions like you have seen things we can't even imagine. The media is a mirage of sorts showing only what they want us to see.
@carwashvnvmc - Let me first say thank you for your loyal service and contribution. I know you didn't get the homecoming you deserved. the 60's and 70's were a time of turmoil. Things are quite different today, but there is no excuse for ever being so conceded to NOT embrace a soldier, who's role being small or large isn't given credit where it's due. They give everything for us and we need to take a moment to realize this. Thank you carwashvnvmc for your service and strength. We owe it to you!
