I think the standard criticism for the movie is a little overboard. It's accusations of misogny are a little misguided, but the criticism for the story is more fair. But the thing is, Zack Snyder's intention was to make a silly, mostly visual, rollercoaster ride. And in that, I think it succeeds.
I liked the film for the symbolism. Although, many people didnt see anything like that -_- like the tricky mirror effects for the blur between what's real and what's imaginary or how rocket was the only one who had an old gun for how she holds onto her past. There's a lot more symbols but I wouldn't have enough room on here.
Your only ever gunna truly understand this film if you've wanted to escape at some point in your life. Otherwise it's clueless to you and just appears as a action movie with chicks. As a girl my self this movie really gets to me and the only thing that I had fault with was that baby doll got laboptimised I really wanted her to escape. Emily and sucker punch are now my favourite actress and film
I judged the movie as dogshit a long time ago. What actually made me want to see it was a review in the Chicago Tribune newspaper that award this movie as the Number 1 WORST Movie Of 2011.
If you did not like this movie, then you aren't childish enough to read past shown fantasies of a girl. You are just a bunch of adults with minds of stone seeing only sexy girls doing crazy shit with no apparent reason behind it. And as @AFHProductions said, you just did not understand it, the whole deepness of the portrayed reality through those fantasies. Snyder had shown what is it like in child's head.
And speaking about invincibility in those fight scenes - she was dancing for god's sake!
I'm not saying Sucker Punch was a really good film. However, I'm disappointed by how little people thought about what the film was trying to say. It was trying to critizise the fetishistic and sexist use of women in a lot of films and showed how these ridiculous fantasies just crumble at the end because there are no happy endings for women in those situations.
It's not a very hard concept to grasp, but so many people can't look past the "sexy girls" to actually pay attention to the film.

Regarding the girl's costumes my issue was the lack of imagination. It being in a fantasy world they should have been colourful and vivid, not generic black stripperific outifts. Sweet Pea's costume was the only interesting one.
Oh, and one more thing, this was supposed to be the imagination of a girl, yet oddly her imagination was that of a teenage boy.
Snyder is a talented visual director but he just throws ideas about randomly., there's no cohesion, its all over the place. The Tengu Samurai sequence kills dramatic tension by making Baby Doll invincible. The fantasy scenes are like a videogame with invincibility cheats activated.
The brothel "layer" is unnecessary and clutters the narrative. It feels underdeveloped, and the girl's characters are wafer thin and built around the plot when it should be the other way round.
@Relugus You just didn't understand it. The alternate reality of the brothel and the action sequences weren't random. They were symbolic of what was happening in reality. The action sequences were filled with phallic imagery and the brothel reality was a true representation of the asylum. The girls were getting sexually abused. Both realities were a representation of that.

movie was awesome, i was so sucked into the action and plot i didnt care what the girls looked liked. and she did not fantisize about being in a brothel she had a mental breakdown, the only fantasies were when she danced. and if you didnt feel a level of anxiety in the pit of your stomach during the opening sequence you may not have a soul.
They should watch the extended version. Rated R and all the scenes that helped to explain what's going on were left in. More exciting and more cohesive. Definitely worth watching even if you hated the theatrical version.
The weird thing about this movie is, I didn't hate it, but I didn't like it either. My big problem was that in the back of my mind I was recognizing this as a fetish hentai movie, just without the sex. I mean seriously, look at the story, the flat characters, fetishistic imagry, it's all there! I feel like I've seen this before reading some perverted manga, except those had at least a better pay-off.

The nerds are getting crybaby fever. It's interesting how people that get so insulted over a review, would even watch a review. I was very disappointed with this film. It's clearly a tits n ass action film that tries to imply female empowerment as justification. To be clear this movie rocked and was well written. In comparison i forced myself to sit through district 9 for the first time, all the way through, because of it's mysteriously high ratings, and THAT movie is a pile! Talk about a waste of budget for an I'll concieved story.

There's so much to hate in this review, mostly the fact that they act like their so ridiculously smart, but in reality, they're idiots who didn't understand it. @help4343 (continued) The biggest flaw was that the girl stated that the "titilation" of the girls isn't effective, yet they go on to talk about it. Getting you to talk about something means it was effective. You can tell by the way they described Zack Snyder that they already had their minds made up going into this one. This film was a lot smarter than people give it credit for, just too subtle for its own good. There are negative reviews for it that are good, this just isn't one of them.

And you should really watch the film again if you think everything is unrelated. Did you notice how the city/citadel/asylum all had the same architecture? How about the story being told on Babydoll’s sword? while I will say the plot was a little confusing as far as what was reality and what wasn't, the use of the soundtrack in combination with the AMAZING visuals was what made me love this, and as far as it just being about sexy girls there are alot more movies that go WAY farther in that regard and there wasn't even ANY nudity in it
her mother died, her stepfather was about to rape her, changed his mind to rape the little sister. she broke out of a second story window to stop him tried to shoot him, and accidentally shot her sister. she had a supreme mental break, and it only got compounded by each life-or-death situation she found herself in.
The MPAA rating system is the worse in the entertainment business, and films do not catch as much shit as video games. video games the media still attacks even though the rating system for video games is amazingly great!!! No BS with it.
I love it when people try to rationalize movies like this. Why not explain why Transformers aren't real and Captain America could never happen. Everyone knows that you check reality at the door. What the fuck do you mean the fighting scenes don't matter? The fighting scenes (missions) are a metaphor for their progress in obtaining the item. If anyone dies in the fighting scenes (IE: When the bomb on the train was set back on and Rocket couldn't leave, the Cook stabs her outside of the mission and in both cases, causes Rocket to die). They should watch the extended version. Rated R and all the scenes that helped to explain what's going on were left in. More exciting and more cohesive. Definitely worth watching even if you hated the theatrical version.

The weird thing about this movie is, I didn't hate it, but I didn't like it either. My big problem was that in the back of my mind I was recognizing this as a fetish hentai movie, just without the sex. I mean seriously, look at the story, the flat characters, fetishistic imagry, it's all there! I feel like I've seen this before reading some perverted manga, except those had at least a better pay-off.

It's clearly a tits n ass action film that tries to imply female empowerment as justification. You’re giving the film much less credit than it’s due. I feel it’s a movie that people should check out at least once. Everyone I know who saw it loved it, and to hell with the snobby critics. Ebert’s comments on Hit-Girl in his “Kick-Ass” review was the last straw.

@help4343 (continued) The biggest flaw was that the girl stated that the "titilation" of the girls isn't effective, yet they go on to talk about it. Getting you to talk about something means it was effective. You can tell by the way they described Zack Snyder that they already had their minds made up going into this one. This film was a lot smarter than people give it credit for, just too subtle for its own good. There are negative reviews for it that are good, this just isn't one of them.

I love it when people try to rationalize movies like this. Why not explain why Transformers aren't real and Captain America could never happen. Everyone knows that you check reality at the door. So it got to "deep" for you, that's no reason to call it a steaming pile of dogshit. This is one of those movies that critics love to hate because it can't be dissected like most movies. Is this movie for everyone? No, of course not. You didn't enjoy the movie, that's ok. It doesn't mean it sucks though.

But leaving massive gaps in the storyline and then just continuing the story as if nothing happened. That is simply bad story telling and shows lazyness in either skript writing or filming. The fight scenes are all held on the parrallel and spiritual world of Baby Doll, who is a projection of Sweet Pea. The movie basically shows us how fucked up a race we are. What the fuck do you mean the fighting scenes don't matter? The fighting scenes (missions) are a metaphor for their progress in obtaining the item. If anyone dies in the fighting scenes (IE: When the bomb on the train was set back on and Rocket couldn't leave, the Cook stabs her outside of the mission and in both cases, causes Rocket to die). Ok...the movie had real cool special effects..but..yes miss i can speak russian did sound kinda stupid..maybe cuz i remember her from spy kids LOL...and the plot and story where kinda dumb.2...so at the end she ends up retarded..and this girl that with dont even fucking care about gets saved..the girl that gets saved is like the most annoying of them all..like seriously..rocket would have been perfect to be saved..but sweetpea..naaa
