I'm a beginner in the game, but after looking at a bunch of matches this is the first, with some proper camera work! Most matches have horrible camera work.( handheld , blurry and what not) I think "squash" is going to have to up the filming in order to become a "bigger" sport. Wich I hope they do cause it's a cool sport!!
@montyizsoamazing my lord you are right! how on earth has the number one ranked player in the world overlooked this basic rule! we must notify him at once!
why do PSA match commentators talk continually during rallies? it's distracting. this isn't a radio broadcast! save it for the breaks between rallies and games.
ha-ha right. but the average squash fan who watches a pro match does not talk during rallies, and if they do you tell 'em to shush. they have two minutes in between games to talk.
Actually the break between games is 90 seconds. The break between points is at most 15 seconds, but often it's more like 5, especially when people like Gaultier or Ashour are playing. The commentators often sit where the audience and players can't hear them so that's why they talk during points.
I'm referring to talking by fans who don't talk a lot during rallies, else the ref says shush.
Check out old BBC broadcasts of matches on PSA Live (e.g Jansher vs. Jahangir). The commentator keeps quiet during rallies. Allows you to get into the match more.
Do you have a reference for the 120 pause claim? I'm curious because I've seen several hundreds of PSA matches over the past years and never have I encountered this odd rule. Also, paragraph 7.2 in the rulebook states the following: "There shall be a 90 second interval between the end of the warm-up and the commencement of the first game and between all games".
And yes, the referee will make sure everyone in the stands are quiet during the rallies.
Yes, WSF rules have a 90-second interval between games but the PSA has used two-minute intervals for many years. I know because I am a referee & referee assessor/instructor. I've officiated ~200 PSA matches as single referee, marker, & central and side referee in the 3-ref system. Most recently I was a referee at the 2010 Tournament of Champions. Youtube doesn't allow me to post a link to a web site with this info, so if you need more references then contact the PSA or ask a PSA pro.
Hey, lookydat, you're right! I had never even thought about it -- I thought the rules were the same from when I play and when the pros play, but I just looked at some recent games (from Saudi '09 and TOC '09) and they're all using two minute breaks. I'm so used to hearing the referee call out "Game to Shabana. 90 seconds!".

It's because there is hardly a break between the rallies in squash. :)
