There's just something about Blue Oyster Cult. No matter who is in the band when they play a gig, whether it's an original member or just a temporary member filling in, the level of playing is phenomenal. It's as if just being in the band raises your level of skill, be you on guitar, drums or keyboard.
@Iknowmusic1988 Yeah me too.I think you have to giv e the hole band credit for the variety.I think Allen Lanier is the best key board pl,ayer in the rock world with two exceptions(John Lord and Billy Powell) I really miss the Bouchards vocals and writing, but if youve seen them latley its quite a show minus Erics vocal chords blowing out.He still is such a great musician and showman.I contantly take new people to BOC shows whenever they come to the Pacific NW and they all leave believers.
@Relivedmemories I'm going with some friends to see them in October in Fresno,CA. I can't wait!
Yeah, I really like, mostly(because I haven't heard a BOC song I didn't like), the early 70s with Joe and Albert Bouchard. I think Imaginos was mainly written by Albert, but I don't think I ever really listened to the album. I bet it's pretty good though.
ugh.. sorry but its hard to appreciate this solo when its out of time with buck's hands. Still a freakin awesome solo but ill be viewing the whole thing in future... you know, the video thats in sync. seriously thats hard to watch...
@azdominator '74? Really?!? That's awesome!! How did their live show compare to other bands at the time? I met a friend who saw 'em in '75 or so; and he said they were, and still remain, the greatest concert he's ever seen!
@Iknowmusic1988 The shows in '74 were great because they played songs from Secret Treaties, Tyrannny and 1st album. The light shows were ok and the giant BOC logo flag was cool. around '75 they really stepped it up when they added the lasers to their live shows. One of the first bands to really do so, especially on the level they had. Bloom shooting the laser from his wrist and hitting a giant mirror ball in the middle of a large arena type venue during Astronomy was INCREDIBLE!
@Iknowmusic1988 Their showmanship was awesome as well. The 5 guitar bit, Bloom bouncing the drumsticks off the stage and catching them in perfect time never missing a beat pounding the cymbals during Cities on flame. Bucks incredible solos, Albert and Joe rhythm section and Laniers keys were just fantastic. They still put on a great show but those stadium and arena shows back in the 70s were the best and they will never headline to those huge crowds again. BOC ON TOUR FOREVER!!!
@azdominator Eric Bloom playing drums? But he wasn't the drummer (he was vocals and played rhythm) Albert Bouchard was drummer til he left. Or did Bloom play drums too? That'd be badass to see if so.
I really want to find the concert[s] where all 5 members played guitar and made some wicked noises. If anyone knows where I could get that, let me know please?
@Iknowmusic1988 You are correct, Bloom didnt play the drums. During the song Cities on flame with rock n roll Bloom would stand on the drum riser and just hit the cymbals while the drummer was playing. Bloom would bounce the drumsticks off the floor, catch them and continue banging the cymbals in time with the beat. I have a picture of this that I took at a concert in 2007 since they still do this on stage. I will email it to you if you want.
@Relivedmemories Buck Dharma's one of the few great guitarists that can create so many different styles and genres of sound from his guitar, that you can hear two or three of his songs on the same album, and they can sound like completely different bands! Guitar Legend!!!
How I wish the extended Astronomy solo from the live recording on "Some enchanted evening" album was available on video, cause that's one of the best solos ever in music history. Go!
Oh man--me too!!!! That was my favorite song for years growing up--and from that album in particular!! I could hum that solo note for note--as well as the extended solo on Don't Fear the Reaper from the same live album. Buck is still one of my favorite rock guitarists!
I remember wearing out the... get this... the EIGHT TRACK TAPE of Some Enchanted Evening. The Astronomy solo provided many hours of air guitar insanity. Buck Dharma is AWESOME!
Saw these guys live about 2 weeks ago, eric was out due to haveing oral surgery the day before but Buck doing the double solos per song was amazing. Totally blew my mind. I exspected the show to be good but it was beyond good.
Seriously if you have never seen these guys live and there in your area spend the money and see them. you wont be disappointed.
He has always been so goooood! This solo and the one on the live version of Astronomy from the Some Enchanted Evening cd just rip! Thanks for showing it.
It's allways a pleasure watching this guy play,I saw them in San Diego around 78/79 with UFO & Pat Travers Band it was a show I'll never forget thank you for posting it!
I had no idea they filmed ETL. What's te video called? I'm gonna assume it's just ETL, but someone let me know otherwise. This is the greatest rock guitar solo of all time. Anyone who disagrees just hasn't heard this one yet. It's a shame how underappreciated this guy is, he truly is one of the greats. I have seen them a couple times in recent years. Buck is 60 or so and still shreds his ass off.
Agreed. This is both my all-time favorite solo and my all-time favorite guitarist. They say that ETL was nothing more than a compilation of mediocre broadcasts that was only released because of contractual obligations, but who cares, it birthed such amazing songs as these.
This was the solo that moved Buck to the front of my Greatest list.
There's nothing like it.

I'm so glad he had hurt his wrist when he was young and quit drums, so he could play guitar and become a guitar god!!!!

CLASSIC BUCK!
First saw BOC in 1974. Seen them 50+ times now and Buck still just absolutely shreds his solos.
Some of these young, up & comers should take a lesson or two from this Real Life Guitar Hero!
