What ever happen to that pre Damon Wayons guy? I forget his name. He was a household name before Wesley Snipes, Denzel, and Will Smith made it big. Wasn't his name Mario Van Peeples? He fell off the earth. Maybe he was Millie or Vanilli?
It was remarkably forgiving of Gunnery Sergeant Highway to not call the MP's on Swede like that. But, between having him arrested and giving him another chance, I'd say the second is the better choice.
@Jurassic0Al First of all, this is a movie and is a highly fictionalized account of the training of U.S. Marines. But that being said, if you watch the movie in its entirerty, Swede wasn't in the first half because he was already locked up in the brig. They talked about him several times but this was the first time we saw him. In real life, someone like this obviously isn't learning and needs to be dishonerably discharged. Someone like that isn't someone the Marine Corps wants representing them.
@GGGeoff- You know what you're talking about, that's for certain. Do you have any past or present affiliation with the Marines? My guess is yes, but you would know.
Regardless, I have seen this movie and recall that Swede was hardly a model Marine prior to this incident. But I think the idea with this movie was that the entire platoon, Swede included, would ultimately shape up under Gunnery Sergeant Highway's leadership.
It's interesting, the puzzled look Swede gives Highway after he's told not to wait for the MPs, to fall outside. You can tell Swede's never been given a chance like that. Probably either kicked the other guy's ass or did brig time, nothing else. He showed instant respect for Highway after being put to the floor. It kinda shows Swede and Highway were borne of the same hardcore stuff, just took different paths.
The best part is when the goofy guy, Private Profile, shrieks, "SWEDE!" with that look on his face. Then you can hear him gasp after Swede get's knocked out LOL! He is a great actor and played a great moron character in this and several other mid-80s movies. "Recon platoon kicks butt...owwww!" LOL!
@Originalman320 That's a shame. He was a funny, talented guy. All over the 80's movies. It was good that he found his character nitche in Hollywood (;
So good the earning of respect!!

@haydenshut Sadly, Tom Villard (Pvt. Profile) passed away some years ago from AIDS.
