This video is fantastic. It definitely brings out the magnificence and the power of the shuttle at launch. The shuttle has to be the greatest machine ever built by man. Something that the United States should always be proud of. Thank you for uploading this.

First; as a professional photographer and specialist in high speed and ballistics from Brooks Institute of Photography, this is some of the most astounding imagery I have ever seen.
Question: How long have these views been available and how long does it take to turn around the footage? I would assume Telescine to D1/D2.
I would think that many of these views would have shown the foam damage to the Columbia orbiter and certainly the SRB O-Ring on the Challenger would they not?
I loved both the commentary & videos. It's a shame the video was so highly compressed, though. JPG compression artifacts were quite visible in much of it. Still, it's one of my favorite videos on YouTube. I hope to see a launch live before the Shuttle missions end. So sad that just two more are scheduled.

@cajoke said: "How could anybody possibly dislike this video?"
Try to understand, most probably when they read the title "...commemorating.." they where most probably convinced to see the commemoration of the destruction of the Shuttle", I cannot think of any other reason, there is the word "cool" in the tag list, but it is quite vague and applicable to anything.
This is really great! A unique look at the shuttle program. I'm sorry to see it go. I know some people have considered the shuttle program an exorbitant waste of funding, but I think it has been money well spent. We have many of our modern conveniences today because of the shuttle program. I anxiously await NASA's next huge space project!
@POZAIDS theres notin else to talk aboot. its fucking boring as shit is what it is. nasa ffs. what'd you expect? dont you remember the simpsons episode in which homer cries out loud to bart to switch the channel when a rocket launch is about to be aired and then bart drops the remote and looses the batteries? now we know why homer couldnt stand that.
@qwertzu3 you actually admit here for all the world to see that your brain works like homer simpson's?
To all of those "bored" with this: The scientists, engineers, and inventors of the world don't need your approval. Your mother would be proud of you, though, if you'd show a little gratitude for the table scraps thrown to you by those with curiosity, creativity, and desire enough to make things happen in this world. They're the reason you aren't living in a cave.
@qwertzu3 And you don't understand that the Simpsons is satire and making fun of people that are bored by a space shuttle launching into space? Do you honestly believe that the Simpsons' point was that rocket launches are boring? That's sad man.
LOL, there's a bird @26:07 who flies out of the exhaust plume, moving as fast as possible to get out of the area. "Here I was, just looking for a meal, and then all hell breaks loose"
@interbartolo They gave a limited number of them out at KSC. I have one and we were told they're not copyrighted so they can be copied and shared freely,
@Skytroop there is a BluRay HD version - it was produced by Matt Melis from Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. We screened it as part of the 2010 Cincinnati Film Festival. Great work indeed :)
Hey Tuna, great video! Thanks so much for posting this and others like it! It's sad to see such a great program wind down. Discovery (STS-125) gave my hardware (SCM) a great ride so I was happy to see all this footage of her. But here's to the future! And who knows. maybe an Orion will go up and grab Hubble for Service Mission 5.
Obama KILLED US manned space exploration when he cancelled the Constellation Program with its Orion Spacecraft. He also GUTTED NASA's budget -- unless you include his increased funding for NASA "to concentrate" on bogus Global Warming, er, I mean Climate Change "research" here at home.
And what about the massive funds Obama reallocated for his new NASA Muslim Outreach Program -- you know, where we try to teach terrorists (who didn't care about learning how to LAND a plane) how to achieve orbit!
This is truely amazing. Pure beauty and extraordinary engineering skills on a level we can barely imagine. Great job and my and I beleave most of the viewers salutations to the whole Space shuttle team. Thank you for bringing space so close to humanity.
@MrKvosesly4va Then you saw only the stylized opening and missed all the actual, real, up-close and personal footage.
I guess you can't make people like something they don't care about. Then again, why would any such people bother replying to the video? Obviously there are those of us out there that are fascinated by this kind of stuff. Had a Christmas party a few days ago; I left this playing in the background (audio off) -- 25+ people fascinated by it, and couldn't stop asking questions.
@MrKvosesly4va Why bother even leaving a comment then. Why did you even look at the video or search for it if you think this is boring?! It's clear you're a wind up merchant. You want boring, youtube search "Paint drying on a wall" and you will see boring!!!
With NASA ending the space shuttle program next year, it is a national disgrace that America will soon be forced to rely on a Soviet-designed spacecraft -- the Russian Soyuz -- as the world's last and only lifeline to the International Space Station...no thanks to Obama.
@joekiddone First of all, there have been many russians giving their lifes for the Soyuz program, so you shouldn't talk about it like that. Secondly it is not Obamas fault, that NASA development on a new system replacing the Space Shuttle got delayed so much. The USA started far too late with development of a new system. This stuff takes decades. Let's just hope, the world will ever have something like the Space Shuttle again.
@ZSSolomon I have had the honor of listening to the last man to walk on the moon, Gene Cernan, speak publicly. I've also heard Mr. Bolden speak of his mission at NASA. The men who possessed "the right stuff" strongly voiced their dissent with Obama. Those astronauts are deeply frustrated (that's a nice way of putting it) with his decisions. You could say that they (along with myself and many other Americans) think that Obama's perspective is based on him NOT believing in American exceptionalism.
@ZSSolomon And there's this from the timesonline.co.uk:
Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, has launched an unprecedented attack on President Obama’s plans to dismantle Nasa’s manned space exploration programme. The world’s best-known astronaut, who has traditionally avoided controversy and rarely seeks the limelight despite his feat 41 years ago, warned that Mr Obama risks blasting American space superiority on a “long downhill slide to mediocrity”.
I really like the shot and comment around 34:46 about the brightness of the SRB exhaust plume compared to the sun. I was lucky enough to see two launches this year at the causeway at Kennedy, one during the day and one at night. It was really stunning how bright the SRB exhaust was even during the day. At night it was almost blinding.
@Megahellastylin Lucky you.. I drove to KSC three days in a row before the Sun was up, just to have Discovery leak all over my hopes and dreams. I still have my causeway ticket, and am planning to head back for the February attempt; I can't express in words how disappointed I will be if it slips again.
From the day I learned what dreams and aspirations were, I have dreamt of seeing a Space Shuttle launch (or Saturn V, but with no one left to build a new one, that is not very likely).
The men and women who went to the trouble of compiling this visual monument deserve the highest praise for their foresight and dedication - it's a marvelous tribute to an exhilaratingly sucessful program
very very beautiful, but I have to admit commentaries after 45 minutes become a little less interesting. Next time I think I turn off the sound, don't be upset People of nasa, you are doing a great job...
This is just awesome! What a crime these are being retired and there is no next generation shuttle. We appear to continue to move back in time when it comes to space and space exploration. We should have been on Mars years ago!
Congratulations! However we are still waiting for the HD version... 720 pixel is fine, if 1080 is impossible... But you have still done a wonderful job!
From a guy, whose Grandmother saw the whole history of American flight (from Kitty Hawk to the US landing on the moon), who spent a career in the US Air Force, who has spent literally hours of dreaming and reading of flight; I would like to thank NASA for the efforts and successes they have had. These recordings are extraordinary, and have "re-ignited" my love of flight.... phenomenal job!!!!!
@Hazenpoppa By that logic you are an ignorant fool. The Shuttle Program was a hugely expensive project that filled no requirement of it's own time or any since. It accomplished nothing except to derail the US space program away from technically useful and scientifically valid projects. All the proof you need is to compare the successes of European and Russian space programs with those of the post-Shuttle NASA. Both carry orders of magnitude more cargo, more reliably at lower cost.
I'm not sure what the Russian payload ratings are, but if you're referring to the Ariane you need to check your math.
The thing that you fail to recognize is that the only way to maintain political interest (and thereby budget) in spaceflight was to keep sending humans into orbit. I don't think anyone would argue that ROI is significantly lower on shuttle program. But to refer to it as a "pointless fiasco" is a pretty significant overstatement.
@Hazenpoppa Ariane 5 carries comparable loads to LEO and double what the shuttle can take to GTO. Launch schedules are comparable and the cost/kg to orbit for Arianne is 40% of that for the Shuttle.
The Russian Proton launcher carries more than either to any orbit and flies twice as many missions a year at a lower cost/kg than either. Though smaller the Soyuz series has been the backbone of human space operations for almost four decades.
All of these are human-rated with zero fatalities.
@Jernaumg AFAIK, the Soyuz is the only current human rated rocket. If the others are then it’s stupid to trade off that much performance for a cargo launcher. Soyuz has had fatalities, no one has flow on the others. Comparing payload is apples to oranges. The others don't have to support humans and return to Earth. That's like comparing a soapbox racer to a go-kart and saying the former is the best vehicle based only on the fact that is uses less gas (while the other is much more versatile).
@bcraig15 As I said, they are all human-rated and active (as are a number of other Russian and Chinese models).
There have been no fatalities on Soyuz launch vehicles. There were two incidents in the Soyuz program, one on re-entry and one in orbit.
You're comparison makes no sense as it's the Shuttle which is the inflexible option, always carrying it's full weight when a more appropriate and efficient rocket would have done a better job. All the others can tailor every launch to their needs.
@Jernaumg I can’t find a source saying any current version of Ariane or Proton is human rated, only references to historical "intent" to make a manned version, which doesn’t automatically make every different model human rated. Anyway, each agency controls its definition of what "human rating" means and they aren’t always the same. Shuttle is good for building in space, Soyuz is better for moving people. I’m not trying to say one is more capable, they were built for different missions.
@bcraig15 Being capable is very different to being the best solution, that's why the Shuttle was such a bad idea. Proton-K for example can carry a Soyuz capsule safely to orbit but why do that when a Soyuz rocket is available? The Shuttle killed US involvement in human space travel dead the day it was announced for many reasons not the least of which is that launches became rare and uneconomical because it was always the worst tool for the job. A poor safety record just made that even worse.
@Jernaumg Remember, the intent was to design a REUSABLE SPACE PLANE. It was an attempt, albeit a failed one, to push the technology to the next generation.
If we learn something, it's that government & politically driven organizations, do not do anything efficiently or economically. Private enterprise excels at that. Want economical access to space? Let commercial provide those services. (Note, there's a lesson here for those who want to turn over the health care system to the government).
The narrators could have really used a script. Too many "ums" and "uhs".

Really interesting stuff, I know NASA gets a slagging from the Yanks but this is a nice walkthrough of the history of the NASA Space Shuttle.

Why do they talk so much about cameras, lenses and shit? Who cares?
POZAIDS 1 year ago
@POZAIDS theres notin else to talk aboot. its fucking boring as shit is what it is. nasa ffs. what'd you expect? dont you remember the simpsons episode in which homer cries out loud to bart to switch the channel when a rocket launch is about to be aired and then bart drops the remote and looses the batteries? now we know why homer couldnt stand that.
qwertzu3 1 year ago
@qwertzu3 you actually admit here for all the world to see that your brain works like homer simpson's?
To all of those "bored" with this: The scientists, engineers, and inventors of the world don't need your approval. Your mother would be proud of you, though, if you'd show a little gratitude for the table scraps thrown to you by those with curiosity, creativity, and desire enough to make things happen in this world. They're the reason you aren't living in a cave.

@qwertzu3 I guess I can't argue with the fact that Homer is a pretty happy guy. Enjoy those donuts.
ballengerm 1 year ago
@qwertzu3 And you don't understand that the Simpsons is satire and making fun of people that are bored by a space shuttle launching into space? Do you honestly believe that the Simpsons' point was that rocket launches are boring? That's sad man.

MrKvosesly4va 1 year ago
@MrKvosesly4va Then you saw only the stylized opening and missed all the actual, real, up-close and personal footage.
I guess you can't make people like something they don't care about. Then again, why would any such people bother replying to the video? Obviously there are those of us out there that are fascinated by this kind of stuff. Had a Christmas party a few days ago; I left this playing in the background (audio off) -- 25+ people fascinated by it, and couldn't stop asking questions.
AikonMGB 1 year ago
@MrKvosesly4va Why bother even leaving a comment then. Why did you even look at the video or search for it if you think this is boring?! It's clear you're a wind up merchant. You want boring, youtube search "Paint drying on a wall" and you will see boring!!!

With NASA ending the space shuttle program next year, it is a national disgrace that America will soon be forced to rely on a Soviet-designed spacecraft -- the Russian Soyuz -- as the world's last and only lifeline to the International Space Station...no thanks to Obama.
joekiddone 1 year ago
@joekiddone First of all, there have been many russians giving their lifes for the Soyuz program, so you shouldn't talk about it like that. Secondly it is not Obamas fault, that NASA development on a new system replacing the Space Shuttle got delayed so much. The USA started far too late with development of a new system. This stuff takes decades. Let's just hope, the world will ever have something like the Space Shuttle again.
ZSSolomon 1 year ago
@ZSSolomon I have had the honor of listening to the last man to walk on the moon, Gene Cernan, speak publicly. I've also heard Mr. Bolden speak of his mission at NASA. The men who possessed "the right stuff" strongly voiced their dissent with Obama. Those astronauts are deeply frustrated (that's a nice way of putting it) with his decisions. You could say that they (along with myself and many other Americans) think that Obama's perspective is based on him NOT believing in American exceptionalism.
joekiddone 1 year ago
@ZSSolomon And there's this from the timesonline.co.uk:

Megahellastylin 1 year ago
@Megahellastylin Lucky you.. I drove to KSC three days in a row before the Sun was up, just to have Discovery leak all over my hopes and dreams. I still have my causeway ticket, and am planning to head back for the February attempt; I can't express in words how disappointed I will be if it slips again.
From the day I learned what dreams and aspirations were, I have dreamt of seeing a Space Shuttle launch (or Saturn V, but with no one left to build a new one, that is not very likely).

The videos are so much more impressive than the pointless fiasco that was the Shuttle program.
Jernaumg 1 year ago
@Jernaumg
You're an idiot.
Hazenpoppa 1 year ago
@Hazenpoppa By that logic you are an ignorant fool. The Shuttle Program was a hugely expensive project that filled no requirement of it's own time or any since. It accomplished nothing except to derail the US space program away from technically useful and scientifically valid projects. All the proof you need is to compare the successes of European and Russian space programs with those of the post-Shuttle NASA. Both carry orders of magnitude more cargo, more reliably at lower cost.
Jernaumg 1 year ago
@Jernaumg
Hazenpoppa 1 year ago
@Hazenpoppa Ariane 5 carries comparable loads to LEO and double what the shuttle can take to GTO. Launch schedules are comparable and the cost/kg to orbit for Arianne is 40% of that for the Shuttle.
The Russian Proton launcher carries more than either to any orbit and flies twice as many missions a year at a lower cost/kg than either. Though smaller the Soyuz series has been the backbone of human space operations for almost four decades.
All of these are human-rated with zero fatalities.
Jernaumg 1 year ago
@Jernaumg AFAIK, the Soyuz is the only current human rated rocket. If the others are then it’s stupid to trade off that much performance for a cargo launcher. Soyuz has had fatalities, no one has flow on the others. Comparing payload is apples to oranges. The others don't have to support humans and return to Earth. That's like comparing a soapbox racer to a go-kart and saying the former is the best vehicle based only on the fact that is uses less gas (while the other is much more versatile).
bcraig15 1 year ago

Jernaumg 1 year ago
@bcraig15 As I said, they are all human-rated and active (as are a number of other Russian and Chinese models).
There have been no fatalities on Soyuz launch vehicles. There were two incidents in the Soyuz program, one on re-entry and one in orbit.
You're comparison makes no sense as it's the Shuttle which is the inflexible option, always carrying it's full weight when a more appropriate and efficient rocket would have done a better job. All the others can tailor every launch to their needs.
Jernaumg 1 year ago
@Jernaumg I can’t find a source saying any current version of Ariane or Proton is human rated, only references to historical "intent" to make a manned version, which doesn’t automatically make every different model human rated. Anyway, each agency controls its definition of what "human rating" means and they aren’t always the same. Shuttle is good for building in space, Soyuz is better for moving people. I’m not trying to say one is more capable, they were built for different missions.
bcraig15 1 year ago
@bcraig15 Being capable is very different to being the best solution, that's why the Shuttle was such a bad idea. Proton-K for example can carry a Soyuz capsule safely to orbit but why do that when a Soyuz rocket is available? The Shuttle killed US involvement in human space travel dead the day it was announced for many reasons not the least of which is that launches became rare and uneconomical because it was always the worst tool for the job. A poor safety record just made that even worse.
Jernaumg 1 year ago
@Jernaumg Remember, the intent was to design a REUSABLE SPACE PLANE. It was an attempt, albeit a failed one, to push the technology to the next generation.
If we learn something, it's that government & politically driven organizations, do not do anything efficiently or economically. Private enterprise excels at that. Want economical access to space? Let commercial provide those services. (Note, there's a lesson here for those who want to turn over the health care system to the government).
