  • Have to confess, I never heard Neil Young's original until I saw the comments here and went and listened. Knew this version from way back in the day. The beautiful harmonies make this version special.

  • she beats Karen Carpenter into cocked hat.She is just bloody amazing. This version is totally brilliant and NeilYoung should have honoured them for this. They make him sound like a beginner..

  • wow - didn't know the band was still going and bringing out new stuff! I have the old 70's album but can't play it as I dont have a turntable any more...

  • I'm sure I saw them perform at Washington Arts Centre about 25 years ago!!!!

  • This is a beautiful song with a wonderful harmony between the singers. Irene Hume has the voice of an angel. So pure, and clear, and gentle. Humanity working together for the benefit of all - most of us are trying and one day the world will be united as one. Earth is our home and for now the only one we have.

  • great voices and harmony. like this more than the original.

  • just a great song-enjoy ALL versions

  • Brilliant version of this song.

  • If you asked me I`d tell you I aint keen on folk music ....trouble is I love nearly all this stuff on here lol ! She has a voice to die for....

  • Immaculate harmonies and great live performance. For me it just lacks the raw grit of Neil Youngs' version.

  • i'd love to see this year's X Factor lot try this!

  • @MrYORKSHIREGUY

    Little Fix you mean?

  • I saw these sing this at the Golden Garter around 1977

  • I know it sounds kinda weird, but I want this played at my funeral. "Flying mother nature's silver seed to a new home in the sun"

  • @awdbugga - Why not? Choose your own song! :)

  • Nice

  • I love this version best - love the harmony. Her voice is pure honey and makes me go weak at the knees with pleasure. I used to try to sing her version when I was a young woman. This recording still has the power to give me goosebumps 30 years later...

  • Great harmony !

  • Good harmony, i prefer the Neil Young version, only because it's the one im used to and i enjoy the piano in it, and plus i couldn't imagine Prelude on acid, so it doesn't make sense.

  • Pure gold dust, this a wonderful recording.

  • great voice!

  • The best version!

  • Saw this band circa 1973 at the Richfield coliseum. They opened for Niel Diamond maybe. Prelude is the reason I like this song.

  • fuckin northerners

  • An absolute classic and faces to voices.

  • One of my all time favorites. After all these years I can finally put faces to the voices.Thank you so much.

  • Classic song from a band that is still gigging - check out their website. They also dabbled in new country and have an award-winning song on one of their albums - they will also sign albums if you order them. Irene Hume has the voice of an angel.

  • I give this one 5 stars. The group sounds great. The one guy looks like John boy Walton. Girls cute though.

  • Not many people do a cover that is as good or better than the original but this is superb. Never aged or getting tired...this song is a gem if ever there was one....

  • Loves the fact that the female singer is my aunty....She is one amazing singer And this song is amazing too!!

  • @therachiirach I performed a terrible act on poor Ian - he had behaved badly one night, I ended up punching him on his nose and breaking it: I was distraught but managed to apologise some months later and he forgave me. It wasn't long after this that they released "After The Goldrush". It sound as good today as it did then. If you see any of them, please tell them we were asking after them... Pam & Stu(art) from the Bay Hotel Folk Club, Cullercotes.

  • Nice! Makes me want to hear The Roches perform this too.

  • This is just amazing, I remember when their version first came out.

The quality of their voices is fantastic, thank you for posting this, I'll add this to favourites, something I will watch over and over again

  • Fabulous version of a great song. I wonder if anyone else remembers Johnny Walker on his Radio 1 show in the mid 70's asking his listeners what it all meant? He had loads of ideas sent in, but the one he eventually gravitated towards just related to the first three words of the song... I vividly recall seeing a fab band at Christmas 1978 in Yeovil who did this live. They were called 'Shady Lady' It left a lasting impression on me (which is why I remember it) I wonder what happened to them?

  • I have this album. It is wonderful, and reminds us that the 1980s need not have been filled with dreck, and that hip hop is not music.

  • The words have changed. Originally Prelude used a few words of their own, like Mother Nature on the run in the 1917 - now they've reverted to 1970's to conform to Neil Young's version. The original Prelude version's chorus was female voices - this version just doesn't have the original's charm.

  • Wonderful song...always a favourite.

  • Fantastic best and most haunting version . . Pity no one ever listened to the early predictions of the worlds resources being raped . . Too late ?

  • I just found the Dolly Parton and the K.D. Lang version of this song. I think this version is the best one.

  • Wow! This is my lucky day I just saw a video of Charlie Dore doing "Pilot Of The Airwaves" that was recommended to me and then I saw a video of this song. Neil Young's version is good but I like this version better. Are there any other versions of "After The Goldrush"?

  • Although I really like Neil Young's original version, this version also great too!

  • im pretty sure one person missed the "like" button

  • good!

  • What a performance - beautiful! I prefer the harmonies in the 73 recording, but this is a very close second. Either of them knocks Neil Young's original into a cocked hat.

  • My dad was in this band with Irene and her husband, Tony Hornsby, and his brother Jim - grew up watching them play the local folk and country festivals in the 80's.

    Brings back great memories

  • Superb! What a great memory.

  • does that woman realise what that song means years later? i hope she is safe and well and nope if never comes true at avsberry but if it does i hope she is there

  • I personally think the french horn, piano, and signature voice of Neil young is what made it so great, other than the lyrics. I respect Prelude, but I must say I gave it 4 stars.

  • amazing and wonderful

  • Anybody who is not moved by this song, surely has no soul. Just an opinion lol, beautiful harmonies, beautiful lyrics.

  • are these a British band

  • Beautiful rendition. I think it's better than Neil Young's cos her voice is sweet and vulnerable...I think it suits the song better. . . what a Lyricist Young was though x x

  • hell i was a kid in forces in a war and every i got scared i thought of this

  • wath a voice and guys good

  • i really enjoy this song thank you for making this video! :)

  • bought this years ago never get bored of it

  • Don't get much better......

  • what a voic she had

  • The Gest ever rendition of this song!!

  • this is real talent

  • One of my all time favorite songs. I'm a sucker for a capella, so I like this version much better than Neil's.

  • superb

  • Beautiful. I remember this song from way back but never knew who it was. I got a copy if it by happy accident on a 70's compilation CD just a year or two ago.

  • That lady has a fantastic voice.

    She's very pretty too.

  • I heard this song in1974 at an exhibition in London. It was a demo tape being played on a digital cassette. I took 30 years to locate it again and buy a copy. Wonderful song.

  • 5 stars are not enough for this song ....

  • So what did Simon, Paul, and Randy have to say??

  • seventies revisited

  • I have often wondered what the group looked like and now I know...... Thanks!

  • I always liked their rendition of this song.

  • I like their version better than Neil Young's.

  • @hendrixzilla

Don't be silly, Neil's version is unique, much like this one is - equally as good, but never better!!!

  • @hendrixzilla I heard their version before Neil's original. When I first heard his, I figured it was a very funny parody - with his thin tenor, and the gawdawful French horn solo...

  • @hendrixzilla I have to agree with you. Excellent

  • @hendrixzilla - WAYYYYYYY better!!!!!

  • One of my favorite songs, I had their 45 for years from when it first came out- it was a tone or two higher. I think it finally got broken just before I had to leave all my record collection behind. Still before I could put them on CD.

  • Thank you for posting! Lovely live version, yes Irene is beautiful. I have this album on vinyl from the 70s and just love it.

  • Words fail me - just beautiful.

Threes ingers whose voices blend perfectly.

  • 5 stars for sure...only because that's all there is to give.....too bad most young rock singers nowadays...don't have a clue about harmony

  • Best of luck with the band (SPLITT). From what I have heard the sound is GREAT!!

  • @The1949Alan why, thank you :o)

  • @dcord123 Absolut. The definitive version. It doesn't get better than this

  • @dcord123 an absolute classic

  • So lovely this - reminds me of my life in the early 70's

  • Beautiful woman, beautiful voice, perfect harmonies.... thanks again for posting.

  • Thanks for posting this. I used to listen to this song when I was in HS back in the mid 70's. Never knew anything about the group or ever saw them until now. This group performs the harmonies to absolute perfection. What a great rendition. Best I've ever heard. I'll definitely have to listen to some of Prelude's other music.

  • I won their album at a funfair about 35 years ago.OMG.

  • One of my all time favourites - thanks so much for posting this. I found the "Freedom" performance on one of my old VHS tapes and posted it immediately. Still looking for their elusive 07/02/74 TOTP performance of "After The Goldrush" - know it exists and was briefly posted here /watch?v=BxoIXEteIUo although in B&W

  • thank you so much for posting this. In 1982 in my senior history class at high school I heard this version of "After the Gold Rush" and it haunted me for years until I finally got a copy of it in 2004. I finally have a face to put to that wonderful voice.

  • They are so great and Irene has the voice of an angel, we just love them, Stephen and Mary.

  • I had this LP and an earlier one and lost them. Now I see how great they were.

  • This has been permanently on my play list for years...

  • Praise indeed! I guess "The Who" will top your list.

  • @tkohl

Mine too my friend! What happened to talent? I miss it...
